Two days later he started eating. Last night he ate 2 ounces of hamburger, same thing this am and for lunch. He is doing great. He even had fruit fly larves in his eye sockets and had to flush it out with saline and treat with teramcin ointment. All infections are now healing

      Since they are marsupials, their normal body temperature range makes it impossible for them to contract rabies. They only contract rabies if they are exposed while they are already running a fever. Unfortunately, this can happen when they eat inorganic materials that can cause intestinal blockages ie plastic, styrofoam, etc. making them sick. Their blood has unique properties which kills ticks moments after the possum is bitten. They also can survive venomous snake bites that could kill an adult human. They kind of pass out for 45 min or so once the venom takes affect and then kind of walk it off. Possums are awesome!!!

If I have to be honest, previous to this video, I was afraid of them, even though I’m 54 years old, all I’ve ever heard in my entire life is how dangerous they are, how vicious they can be, how they destroy everything in sight and carry disease. Your video has completely changed my entire perspective on this topic, and now I want one! I had no idea they could be that loving and affectionate! More people need to post videos like this to take away the ignorance, many of us, especially me, have regarding wild animals, especially those that many people consider to be a pest or a danger. Humans fear what they don't know. Once you take your time to know an animal, you will anderstand how they really are. We are taught to fear the unknown, to not trust, to kill what MIGHT be dangerous, even if it isn't. Possums, rats, pigeons, crows, mice: they are not pests, they are intelligent, smart and affectionate if they bond with you. One just needs to give them a chance and truly, really look at them.

I try to teach my kids, every animal (hell to me, even every bug too) is precious and that all the negative stigmas they may have are almost always only out of their fear, their instinct, or in the predators category, their nature. Of course disease is very real and truly should be avoided but every animal deserves kindness from every human. And being scared of animals is totally natural but they're really all just here trying to survive like we are. None of them have capacity for malice. Youre so sweet for seeing this the way you did.

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus Před 6 měsíci +8

      Even wild opossums are nothing like you described. They're certainly not vicious and dangerous. In hours of watching (both in person and on camera) opossums interacting with each other, raccoons, skunks and cats I've seen an opossum being aggressive _once._ That was one adult male chasing away another from a pile of food. They're actually quite shy around not just people but other animals and have very laid back, almost sweet, personalities.
      The disease thing is actually kind of funny because think about it...have you ever heard of a rabid opossum? No, because their body temperature is too low for not just rabies but most disease common to wild animals.
      I think their reputation is entirely based on people thinking they're ugly and scary looking. I agree that they aren't as cute as raccoon and skunks but they grow on you once you get to know them. They're very much an "it's what's on the inside that counts" animal. Once you see how sweet they are they suddenly look a lot cuter.

    When I was a little girl living in the country with our house on the edge of a forest, there was a newly built highway running near the edge of our property. Inevitably there were wild animals run over by cars. Therefore there were frequently baby animals that had been orphaned that would wander up in our yard. As an animal loving child, I felt compelled to help any animal that looked like it needed help. During the years that I lived there, there were TWO different instances that I found baby possums & became their mother! They each bonded with me like this, & my mom & dad let me take care of them. I also intended to let them be rehabbed then go back to the wild, but no - neither one of them wanted anything to do with living outside! I loved my possum babies! And they loved me! I am 61 years old now & I still love animals & help them any time I see them in need. It was wonderful to see someone being a possum mommy like I once was!! God bless!!!

    I saw a mother opossum that had been hit by a car and noticed that 4 babies were still clinging to her. I raced home and got a small box to put them in. There were three gray and one brown. I brought them home and we raised them, feeding them an egg and milk mixture, then rubbing their tummies so they could digest it properly. After a few weeks they graduated to cat food. The vet said that once they start eating meat they can go back into the wild. So, we released them back into the wild never to be seen by us again. We found them wild, they stayed wild, and they went back to the wild. Just a unique story I wanted to share. 🤗

      Has the potential to yes. Always irks me when people imply natural is always best. Natural living humans died in their 30s when their teeth complications killed them, if they were lucky to make that age. Wild wolves live 5 -8yrs if they're lucky and so on. Nature is brutal, it needs to be respected not romanticised.

Plants; all ranges of prey and apex predators are all needed for balance.
      Ii will say even tho I think nature is brutal if someone says they "saved" an animal from a predator (unless it's something like a cat etc) or someone says they found an injured or sick animal, if it's native I'm the type to say to just release it as to let nature take its course or if it's not native give it to a rehabilitator who can properly deal with it and in most cases probably has more experience or at least more resources than a lot of people may have, yk? Just my thought on it, I rabbled, but pretty much despite how brutal nature is, that brutality is kind of needed 🤷‍♀️

      @@dan_hitchman007 that's BS. They aren't "quite aggressive". A dog is more likely to bit at you than a opossum. The opposum will run away first. If it can't, it will freeze, and if it thinks playing dead will work, it will do that. But if YOU'RE aggressive, he will bare his teeth and hiss to scare you away, and then run if he can. You have to really push an oppossum to get it to attack, and it will be your aggression, not his, that started the fight.
      Think of all the animals - even moths - that are equipped with characteristics that scare other animals away, yet are totally harmless. Learn about what you fear. Usually you'll find out you're fearing someone or something that is less dangerous than you.
