  • Black Widow used to be a Russian spy. In the US she goes by Natasha Romanoff but this is not her real name. "Natasha Romanoff" is her American alias, her real name is... actually she has at least eight names: Natalia Alianovna Romanova is just one of them.
Russian names can take a few forms depending on the context of conversation. In Russia Black Widow would go by Natalia, Natalia Alianovna, Natasha, Nata, Natashka, Nataha, Natashenka and probably a few more. In this video I'm gonna tell you in what situation what name she would use.
A little note on her alias. Her real last name is Romanova, but in the US she changed it to Romanoff (Romanov). It sounds a little strange to Russian speakers because Romanoff is a male version of Romanova (in Slavic languages last names have gender ending). But it's qute common among immirgants to change their name that way in order not to confuse people (when one family member is Romanov, another is Romanova which sounds like two different names for English speakers).

The ability to cutify any word is also something we have in German. We add "-chen" or "-lein" (with some random sound changes in the word, because it wouldn't be German if it were simple). Though not the different levels you have in Russian, which are pretty cool I think :D We also don't really use it for names, only nouns.

A friend of mine, who speaks German, calls herself Julchen somethimes (her name is Julia). Could it be like July? Some words are less or more cutifiable, the most flexible one is probably the word for 'cat, it deserves a special video, I guess :)

@@sergeysvids2756 yes that's a good comparison! But many younger people don't use the -chen and -lein anymore so you will find a lot of peole who cutify their names with -i
