- Emily is Paris is an American romantic comedy about a girl who went to Paris. Most characters speak English in the show, which made me wonder how it was translated to French. I did a little research and found the answer quite interesting.

i always thought its interesting how movies translate untranslatable things:
puns, levels of formality, or even when the plot of the movie is a language barrier in the exact language the movie screens in.
well, here is my answer.
thanks for this video, really cool!
Thank you, for me it's interesting to watch a Russian movie in English and see how they translate the levels of formality there. For example, in Russian it's normal to address someone formally by two names - first and patronymic name. But it's hard to translate it to English so that people don't get confused. I'll probably make a video about it too :)
@@sergeysvids2756 Yeah, and same goes for English movies in Russian. I was watching Downtown Abbey, a show about British aristocrats, and I noticed how the daughter used Вы with her mom (when she'd say "you" in English with any level of formality). It was obviously a conscious choice to show their high class and refinedness and I thought it was a cool detail.
This reminds me of the Spanish dubs of Toy Story 3 where Buzz gets a mode where he speaks Spanish and acts romantically and so they changed its name to romantic mode and gave him an exaggerated peninsular accent (for Spain that’s Andalusian and it’s also used in the Catalan dub)
That's quite interesting!
I remember there was some English movie set in Austria (I don't remember the name), and as part of a joke they had a guy speak German. In the German dub, I think they just played it straight without changing anything, which just was really weird. So props for the translators here being quite creative.
Definitely a fascinating topic.
I was watching Tribes of Europa (a German show), and the characters spoke German and English there. So, I watched the original version with English subtitles for German. But there is a German dub and I think (not really sure) they all just speak German in it.
This is so interesting, thank you for making a video on it!
Thank you!
Omg you’re here
Thank you for your excellent explanation and demonstration! I've been wondering about this, and I never thought of this solution. It's a pity, though: just imagine how much more the French could hate Emily if they only knew her true limitations.
Thank you, I found this solution quite interesting :)
hello are you still around ?
Translators have a lot of work, changing jokes and context shows they are actually putting in effort.
But the show is still awful. American goes to france where everyone is jealous of her for being so amazing... when in actuality it's full of stereotypes and genuinely insulting. Even the creator of the show said the show doesn't deserve nominations. I wish americans would do any sort of research when dealing with foreign countries.
I think this show would be MUCH more fun if it was google translated to french, then google translated to russian and then google translated to english.
I wonder if season 2 is going to be better
This is a terrible adaptation. Certainly doesn't communicate the level of Emily's ignorance (she is an obnoxious character, fight me!) or how she is out of place. They should have left her speaking English and used French subtitles
that would have felt so out of place though XD
Everyone is speaking English there, that's the problem. If she spoke English and they spoke French, most people would be confused, I guess
😂 it's an option to keep it in English but with french subtitles. Netflix doesn't force the French to listen to the French version.
I am watching the French version right now and I have to say that Emily is still pretty annoying :D
Ridicule.... cette série n'aurait pas dû etre doublée
