I mean,if you really are a starving artist, create a fivver account and start promoting yourself and channel your promotion to your fivver account or something, that will look more legit, instead of asking people directly on discord, to send money through paypall no less, is extremely sketchy, and no legit artist should do that. I usually just ignore everyone that ask me to send money through PayPal in discord, unless I already did some research on the person. Just promote your fivver account or something, and if the customer want to pay using PayPal, well, just comply I guess?

To be fair, nobody should be buying a commission from a stranger with 0 credibility or good reputation.
Also, if you're sending the money on paypal, their address/information should be accessible via paypal. Request a refund and report them for scams.
I've sold commissions myself, but the lack of privacy is exactly why I don't use paypal for commissions lol.
Basically speaking, the best way to keep artists and consumers safe, is to inform them on HOW TO REPORT SCAMMERS and to AVOID STRANGERS WITH NO CREDIBILITY.

    • @RyuSei544732
      @RyuSei544732 Před rokem +15

@@nomoretwitterhandlesThat's not entirely true. As an amateur artist myself, I always charge my customers 100% of price (no upfront) because I'm not popular enough. Given my portfolio, I can ensure my customers I know what am I doing.
I think it's a double-edged sword that payments such as Paypal doesn't give much privacy as hiding your real identity. I find out it's more helpful for me because if anything goes wrong, I can just report them and it will mess their day.
Amateur artists with lesser reputation should inform their customers that they are amateur, and customers should know who are they commissioning to.

Artist to artist, here are some tips for you all:
      1) *Be credible and have a good reputation.* Don't mix your professional art account(s) with personal ones unless you're already famous and reputable, otherwise this can damage/hinder your ability to get a client base.
      2) *Have a portfolio.* This is necessary for professional artists anyways. Show the people you know how to make art so they know it's worth buying.
      3) *Do NOT DM people about commissions unless they are EXPLICITLY ASKING FOR COMMISSIONS.* As an artist AND a consumer, I can't tell you how infuriating it is to see someone in my DMs like "hey wanna buy my art?" NO MF! AND I will report you for scamming because I DO NOT KNOW YOU. It's common courtesy to go after CUSTOMERS, not RANDOM PEOPLE.
      4) *NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK!!!* If you want to make a living by selling your art, NETWORK!!!!!! Grow your clientele! Artists can make hella good money with repeat customers, so make sure you're networking and getting to know people! The more people you know, the more customers you will get! Find your connections! (This is NOT the same as DMing strangers asking them to buy your commissions! Networking is about connections!)
Hopefully these tips can lessen your anxiety about the situation. If someone tries to claim you are a scammer, BLOCK THE HOE! Have fun!

I got one of the artist scams a few weeks back, and since they were being nice in conversation and didn't seem too forceful about payment about it i just went along with it, after about 10 minutes of talking about art they suddenly pulled out the "I actually need emergency funds for my dog because he got into a car accident" excuse and tried to haggle for a high price because of that. I'm usually pretty paranoid of scams, but i could honestly see some of my friends falling for it since one of them even fell for the "i reported your steam account" scam. Some people just don't realize when it's happening, and by the time they do it's too late, kinda sucks on how they take advantage of people like that :/

I once was on a server looking for an artist and among many there was one that didn't give me their portfolio saying that it all got deleted but that they are working on a piece now and that they'll send it later. I wait, and they send what looks like an ai generated image, but maybe it's just 3d. I give them the benefit of the doubt and ask them if it's 3d. They start to get a little angry saying they lost all their drawings (already said that, not answering the question). Then they ask me how would I like the picture to be made. I say there's no way I'm going to pay someone for a drawing if I don't know how it'll look in the end. I try to explain it to them, they keep on insisting that they can draw the picture I want. I see this gets nowhere, ignore them. Decide on another artist that actually showed their work, pay them after the sketch, a few days of back and forth with the artist about little changes and them sending updates. Now I have a beautiful drawing.
Moral of the story: Always go with someone who can show you their previous work. And I guess paying after a sketch is done is another layer to protect yourself. And for artist: Watermark the commission until it's paid.

So stealing credentials from your discord account might also steal your email and other game accounts.

I get exclusively art scams of the non-emergency variety. The funny part is, the server they contact me from, is a VRChat community that I am a partnered artist with, that has a dedicated commissions forum. I don't need commissions, I am an artist, I do my own work, and there's a commissions forum. Every single time, I, through conversation, warn them that I'm already an artist, and then politely inform them that they're acting like a scammer, and direct them to the commissions forum. They remind me that they're "not a scammer", and leave the server to go scam somewhere else.
    Every time.

    • @4Bakers

Usually the things they offer are 2D art, 3D art, vtuber model, live stream overlay, etc
The part of that, to me, that's a massive red flag, is the fact that they're good at three major, separate categories: 2D art, 3D art, and vtuber models. Most vtuber models are "live 2D", which is an insane system that requires immense amount of dedicated skill, and those models usually cost upwards of thousands of dollars, because of how insanely difficult they are to make. The fact that these "artists" can make those, as well as professional 3D art and 2D art and live stream overlays, and for cheap, is an obvious giveaway that they're making shit up.

      Oh hi bakers!
Happy to finally see the art scam covered here.
I’ve talked to 2 of these artist scams, both claiming they could make 3D models. So I ask them to show me a wireframe of one of their models. Many messages later, and these artists didn’t even know what a wireframe was. Meanwhile they were asking hundreds of dollars for a model that at most would take an hour. (I would know as someone who makes 3D models)
If anyone asks you for commissions unprompted, best to ignore them or HEAVILY scrutinize their art or skills. Avoid PayPal friends and family too if they ask for payment.

An artist [at least a self respecting one] NEVER goes to contact a customer unsolicited. Usually they'll have a post or commissions card and wait for a client to message first. Its sad to see this sort of scam just growing more and more with the rise of AI art. They can contain malicious and hidden code that automatically execute, this is done through several exploits in the way a PDF file works.
MOST web browsers and antiviruses (Windows Defender etc.) *should* protect you from this nowadays, but you can never be too sure.
Other files to look out for that can possibly be a little "iffy" to open would be .bat .vbs .exe .scr .rtf - etc.

Even tho this video is 6 months old, these scams do continue.
Recently, the art commission scams have turned to people randomly messaging you and asking if your profile picture is your original character. They will then ask YOU if YOU want to commission THEM (fyi, not how that works). They then will send traced or fully stolen pieces. I shut down every conversation the moment someone asks if that's my character in my profile picture.

I took one of these up as i was actually looking for a commission (this was before the whole AI art stuff) and they actually did deliver the art very promptly and it was pretty well done for the price i paid.

On the discord artist scams, i've got actually ONE.
So, uh i was just playing roblox cassually when i get a DM from someone, saying if that they could make me CZcams/Twitch Emojis/pfps just for 50$ because he's an artists and he needs to pay his debts and food, he then send me some of the stuff he did for other people, but then while looking at google i found the same exact images, and then i told him to go scam someone else and blocked him.

As an artist who takes commissions, if you have an artist come into DMs to ask for YOU to pay them for a commission, even if legitimate, ignore it, its already kinda seen as rude from the artist to begin with

some random person in a server i was in sent me a DM, and they asked if i had any commissions for them since they were an 'artist'. they sent me their instagram profile, and when i looked through it i saw that a lot of it just looked.. weird. their 'art' style looked VERY different every time, anatomy was weird, and a lot of it looked like AI 'art'. i showed it to some of my friends and they agreed on it not being actual art. i confronted the person about it and they immediately blocked me...

  • @damadorias

Man idk about other artists but if I was to open for commissions I would never fckn message random people asking if they want one, that's just obnoxious and rude. I'd be waiting for someone to message me directly asking for one, y'know, like a normal person. Jumping into dms and asking random people if they wanna buy commissions has the same energy as someone knocking on the door of a random house and then proceeding to try and sell a toaster to a stranger

Someone DM’d me and said that can make twitch overlays and sent me just over dramatic twitch overlays.
Little did she know, I don’t need twitch overlays. I don’t stream.
But of course, I’m too nice and recommended a server that people often want commissions from.
They said thank you, I didn’t actually see them advertise in the server, I think they were trying to scam me? But.. I dunno.
