- Hey everyone! In today's video I show you how to install EL wire lighting in the interior of my 2017 Dodge Challenger 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker. Ultimately the new mod cost me about $15. Was it worth the 15 dollars?... Find out in today's video! It took me a lot longer than I thought but I really like the result! Would I do it again?...thats debatable... It was extremely frustrating at times:

10:45 - 11:30 Tip: Instead of taping the wire to the hanger and pushing it up, feed the hanger down first then tape the wire to it and pull it back out... *FAR* easier
Mind blown.
Hmm perhaps but perhaps not.
The good old pull out method
I’d use electrical tape instead of scotch tape.
I just wouldn’t use the hanger. The EL Wire is just strong enough to thread through without the hanger. If you have any other problems, just pop the panel off a little bit more so your hand can fit and thread it that way. At least, that’s how my car is.
Instead of connecting the wires to the floor light connect them to an after market subwoofer amplifier via the speaker wire location and they will light up when the bass hits
Genius
Yooo, your a Genius
@@onyxphantom6762 the problem with the sound activation kits is it goes off of all sounds not strictly the bass. And my lights never blew out. I was using a 1200 watt amp
@@onyxphantom6762 the problem with the sound activation kits is it goes off of all sounds not strictly the bass. And my lights never blew out. I was using a 1200 watt amp
You could also use resistors to weaken the power to the lights. I fail to see how your set up is not a lot of work and how simply putting wires in a amp is "a lot of work"

Just did this install on my Super Bee. I couldn’t have done this without watching your video, so thank you. Took almost 5 hours, but it looks fantastic! Thanks again for sharing this info.
You definitely are going in places mate! Cudos
5 hours? What took the most time? Watching this video and learning from his mistakes it took me like 2hr tops. And that's running 4 different sets of lights (4 doors, center console and dash.
@@esellantain the video he says it took him 5-6 hours lol
Ive taken apart the interior of my car multiple times and have added things like dash cams and backup cameras. If u have as much experience as that u can probably get this done in under an hour
When you show the the result i was blown away :0 big like from me
How much HP did that light mod add????
About 200+ HP pretty much worth it

@@denis.ao07 its when you add the extra stickers on the windshield, it gives it 1400 HP 🔥😎
More than you can afford pal

Just bought my Dodge Challenger R/T less than a week ago (5.14.20) I'm loving this car so much. Keep showing these mods, I'm doing them all. I'll be purchasing these lights today, thanks again!
Awesome you're going to love the car!
I noticed it is nearly a perfect match for the gauge needle orange so it works! Very cool and super simple instillation just ram it between trim pieces, got to love it.
Thorough install, well done sir.
The finger on the microphone was crazy
I never thought little things and imperfections like that were that big of a deal, but this one was painful to watch and listen to, literally. It gave me a headache..🤕
Sooooo... the reasons you list it NOT being worth it all sound like your fault and issues, and nothing to do with the product. And to be honest, anyone that can change a tire or their own oil can do this job in less that an hour or so, even quicker if you know your vehicle and the correct ways of removing trim and accessing the proper wiring. There’s no way this is an intermediate-to-difficult job for the average DIY’er.
That aside, I think it would look better if the light was diffused instead of looking very sharp and concentrated. More like the Mercedes and Jaguar ambient lighting.
Yeah it was annoying asf!
Hahaha so true
Thanks man for your hard work ! It was very informative. Love the music :)
Looks great lit up. I would consider wrapping the parts of the wire under the steering wheel in electrical tape so you don’t see the light coming from there and adding a switch in the footwell where you had done the wiring so you can disable it if you don’t want it lighting up. To make the coat hanger part easier I might feed the coat hanger down from the top and then tape the light to it and pull the coat hanger back out with the light attached. Nice work!
It actually lights up at the perfect times when connected to the footwell. It turns off during the daytime unless the doors are open. It stays on at night. Personally i like that. Also I used the self-stripping connectors that he recommended against and it worked out fine for me, took maybe 30mins to route the EL wire and another 15 minutes to do the electrical with the snap connectors and hide all the visible wire.
Edit - There's a way to turn manually turn off the light from the uconnect settings but it turns off the footwell light aswell
My footwell lights have their own switch with dimmer already on the dash - definitely gunna do this
I think it kind of looks sick even for the orange but I definitely would prefer a true red color only because it would match the instrument cluster better.
Thanks for the good step by step. I like the look lit up but don't like the non lit orange. If the wire was clear when off I would definitely use it.
I just crack some glow stick and tape 2 min job🤷🏻♂️
sum good shit lol
🤣😂
Would look good that... for a few hours
Lmaoooo
I dig the way it came out dude! Thanks for all the tips
Pro tip: when feeding the wire, put the coat hanger downward through the area you want the wire to come out, then attach the wire so all you have to do is pull the coat hanger back out the top so the wire comes with it. Don't attach the wire before feeding it through the area because then you are just trying to shove something twice as large through a whole when you have no idea where that hole is going. You could easily stretch or break a wire from the shifter this way.
Also, cut that connector and solder the wire in. This ensures that the wires will not come apart and don't give direct power to something you don't want to short out. Lol.
Other than that, great video
I’ve actually needed to manually splice before.
For those wondering he meant you’re only removing the plastic cover around the light wire (source of power) not cutting through the wires.
You use the splice to and move it clockwise and counter clockwise around it until you can see the metal wire beneath and then pull gently away from each other to expose the wire, then wrap your wire around that, secure and twist it, and tape it off with electric tape.
You are moving the plastic on that light, NOT CUTTIING THE WIRE through.
I have a question, he taps into the wires of the foot lighting but doesnt this mean that it either will always stay on or only goes on when the foot lighting is on?
@@adamchakkour5722 yes. if he taps into the foot lighting, anything connected to that will be powered when they are powered, off when they're off (assuming they don't have a controller, basically a light switch for a car).
If you want them to stay on, tap into a wire (i recommend a fuse tap to the fuse box, cost $9, plugs straight into the fusebox, you can use a free slot, or a used one, as the tap has an extra slot for slots already in-use. 1 fuse is for the LED-lights usually a 2-3 amp fuse, LEDs and Fiber use so little power. you can power several hundred LEDs on 3 amp fuse, the 2nd is for if you tap into a slot already used for say, dome lights. an empty slot could be for a sunroof while your car doesn't actually have a sunroof, like in my car, i tapped my lights into a empty slot that receives power when the car is on)
if you want to turn them off/on, you can find a fuse or accessory that already does this the way you want, or you can buy a controller (light switch) and put it between power source and the lights themselves.
Thanks man for an honest review. I liked it, I thought I would try it. But, decided to stick to the generic panel trim.
it looks badass! good job bro🤟🏻
😂😂😂 I feel like 5 minutes of this is him hating the quick snap connectors
A quick note on this: The distance around your dash is about 74 inches. The distance around your center console is about 54 inches. It is about 24 inches from the closest point on both of these areas to the floor near the accelerator. If you decide to use the same point he used on the center console, I would add another 18-24 inches, just to give yourself enough room.
I measured these using a string, then by measuring the string.
This video recommends a single EL wire. I'm thinking this might be better with two separate wires. It should be easy enough to splice them both together and then into that light housing, it might just take a little extra work.
Shorter wires cost a little less than the single long one, so your overall cost shouldn't be TOO much higher, and if one of the wires fails for some reason, you can replace one area rather than both. It might also be easier to feed the center console wire without the enormous length coming from the dash.
Hope this helps. Cheers, all.
Edit: I just bought the same wire at the shortest length and those were $10 each. I paid $22 after tax for two wires.
Why not just get 15 ft for $12? It's how I did my 2 dodges.
Great video, thanks. I installed a different brand of LED's back in 2018 in my Challenger and the LED's are now very dim. Sad looking now...LOL. Yours look significantly brighter than mine. Yeah, the hardest part was feeding it through the center console for me too. Gonna try these wires, thanks again.
You went straight ol' school on this man like back in the Radio Shack days! I can do this myself and save a few hundred bucks!

Dodge gang!! Thanks for the cool vid, my chargers gana be lit up electric blue this weekend
it works for chargers too?
First, thank you for this very informative video! I really enjoyed seeing ya do the entire process thoroughly. I was wondering if you Can you do a video on how you took apart the 12v adapter prior to hooking up the wires ? I tried looking up videos but I’m more interested as to how you did it. Thanks in advance !
Just unscrew the top of the adapter and pull out the wires. It’s that easy. Once you have the wires pulled, you can strip them as needed.
Just cut the wire and strip it
Him installing the lights is SO SATISFYING
Thanks buddy I never heard about el wire, so now I can get into my Camaro ✌️
Great install! How much EL wire was used or left over once it was installed? Asking since there is a less expensive option for 500cm (197in./16ft) @ $12.99 vs 800cm (315in/26ft) @ $16.99. Thanks!
My Dodge Dart GT already includes this from factory. However will be doing this to my Dodge Charger GT.... Thanks!
I wish they included this on the Rallye from factory as well so that I dont have to do it myself. But oh well, it'll be fun to do it myself
@@alexdodge2515 It won't take long at all 15min maybe 20. I hard wire so it comes on when open the door. It is sweet!.
@@jjhelios7214 Nice. I'm not gonna be hardwiring it in tho. Nor am I gonna do the exact one used in the video. I'm planning on getting a fiberoptic light set so I can have different colors and I'll be using the cigarette lighter in the center console storage. I'm also looking into how feasible it'll be to have a splitter for the cigarette lighter outlet so that I can also add lights under the dash and under the back of the front seats as well without having to hardwire them in
@@alexdodge2515 I got mine changing different colors but I put led on each end because just one wasn't bright enough. Got mine at Auto Zone Type S brand.
I remember I bought this wire back in the 90's from VARAD industry. It's nothing new it just got a lot cheaper it used to be $25-40 per foot back then. That transformer is 400watts AC and if the end is bare it will shock you. It's not fiber optic it's a phosphorus wire with a thin copper wire loosely wrapped. It does give a cool effect that's why I also bought back then.
Hey. This video really helped. Only thing I did different that was easier was I fed the clothes hanger wire down the console and then taped the EL wire to the hanger and pulled it back through.
I actually like this plan on doing a blue one
Have you done it yet? I can upload a video of my trim if you want cause I just finished with an install
I might do my cup holders aswell and you’re right that would be nice if they automatically came with this feature like the new camaros

Should be connected to a dimmer switch..
Yup and it would be pretty cheap and easy to install, a in and out DC dimmer with knob is like $4.
When I had mine it was controlled from the factory dimmer switch

@@Twentiesss I connected with the factory dimmer switch. When I turned the dimmer switch the voltage converter burned (actually 2 converter), the I just left them there, lol. I got the 2015 challenger.

Wanna put this in my car to look cool but I remember it'd be a laughing stock if someone see a Prius with this lighting
Don’t mod it, save up and buy a nicer car you’ll enjoy
Take pride in what you have there’s nothing wrong with wanting to add stuff to it. I was adding stuff to my civic later on I upgraded to a camaro 2ss and soon I will be getting a hellcat 🤘🏻.
People will laugh at you just for having a Prius. Wouldn't matter to go and make it look nice at least.
Triparadox Clifford the prius is as fast as the suburu crosstreck crosstrack? What is it?
Doesn't matter what car you have. Someone somewhere thinks it's a pos. But you didn't buy it for other people, you bought it for you. And for $15 you can customize it a little more to your liking.
very good advise dude!!
Thanks for the informative video! Although I wish someone made a video for the light installation for a civic 2013, I can't for the life of mine find any video or forums that show an installation video and definitely would be needing a prying tool for it. Hopefully this video can give me better insight for my civic.
Use the type s lighting system It’s the exact same thing except it’s clear except when it lights up and it’s much more premium and it’s app control and you can change the colors of it it looks so dope at night and when you turn off during the daytime you won’t even see it it blends in because it’s clear It’s expensive it’s like $70 but it’s worth it

"el wire" as in el jefe or el idiota ...therefore WRONG
He’s right actually. It’s an abbreviation. So shut up El Jefe.
oh thank god someone else is pissed off by his idiot ass
Did that really bother you enough to waist time out of your day to comment? "El wire" "e-l wire" WHO CARES?
This thing is rock solid cool. Worth the time.
Thank you very helpful, about to install on my Chrysler 200
Wow... it looks great when lit up... and good when not lit in daylight (I agree with the other "HEMI Orange" comments). BUT... why didn't you cut the EL wire (it's not fiber optic BTW) at the end of the dash on the right and solder wires and run them down to the center console and reconnect the rest of the EL wire down there? Two things this adds... 1) no red light inside the dash (which drives me crazy)... and 2) easier wire to run between the dash and center console (which shouldn't have taken more than a minute to run). I have to give props for trying this without knowing anything about EL wire. BTW - I don't care what other CZcamsr's use... don't ever use wire taps... solder and heat shrink... OR... good 'ol twist and tape will always be better than that garbage.
And just a tip on the "noise" it was making when it started working (after your wrap and tape method)... EL wire uses high voltage / low amperage to stimulate the wire coating and create the cool glow you like (the high frequency noise you hear is the voltage regulator inside that black brick generating the higher voltage). So.... that fancy scissor cut you made next to where your right elbow may rest while driving... may stimulate you a little more than you expect... especially if you are a little wet and touching any metal in the car. It won't kill you... but it could make sure you "were awake". Just food for thought :)
Keep learning as you go (as I always say). Trust me when I say I have blown up perfectly good "brand new" car electrical systems due do mistakes or oversight... you live and you learn... and this is a good learning lesson for you and your viewers. Proud of you for not being afraid... experimenting with different wiring technology (even if it sucks)... and trying different lighting tech that you haven't used before.
Be well... stay safe and healthy. Crazy times out there now. Cheers!
Yeah they could add that light for the option of 1,000$ ... might as well just do it for 15$
Dollar signs go in front of numbers. $1.

Sometimes I see these kinds of projects and think, I'd like to try that. Then I see all the wiring and stuff and backtrack hella hard, lol. Glad my top trim Impala already has a type of interior lighting just standard; a blue light that turns on beneath the chrome trimming at night all across the front, from door to door. Holds me over until I find an idea where I don't think I'll ruin the car myself, lol. But I will say, if you've wired a sub to an old car before, makes this job seem quite a bit easier. Stuffs harder on these newer more technically advanced cars but this one seems easy enough, and actually gives me an idea on how to wire under seat lightning. I just used the cigarette lighter on my old car but being able to draw power from one of those same standard foot lights will be a major upgrade to how I hide the wires underneath
Great video! I want to do this on my dad's 2015 supercharged Audi Q7. The only thing is that the panels are sort of shapped differently lol
