    Rafa has got to be one of the most underrated managers in the history:
    - Won La Liga with Valencia beating Real Madrid and Barca
    - Took Valencia to CL finals.
    - Won the CL with Liverpool completing the greatest comeback in CL history.
    - Lead Newcastle to a comfortable 10th place finish despite having one of the worst squads in the league.

    • @glammer
      @glammer Před 4 lety +4

      @@johni9274 He didn't want to sell Alonso. He wanted Barry and Keane for a left-sided partnership. Bellamy had just been made City's player of the year with Barry behind him on the left. Rafa was given Keane and told to sell to buy Barry. Nobody would say Barry is a better individual player than Alonso but people forget that Steve McLaren had put Barry into the England team with Gerrard instead of Lampard and turned results around. Is Barry better than Lampard? No, but in that England team he was. That's when Rafa got interested in Barry. Barry was also able to play in more positions, something Rafa liked in players. Alonso had also been injured for almost a season, come back and been injured again. Those are the problematic decisions media luvvies and fans don't have to make. And what happened when Alonso was put up for sale? One offer of £12m from Juventus. Where were all the brilliant European managers bidding for this midfield genius? The whole thing seemed to spur Alonso on and he had maybe his best season following that, which got Real interested. For a bit more context, they paid £25m for him at the same time they paid £80m for Ronaldo and £56m for Kaka. We all loved Alonso but there's been a lot of revisionism over that episode.

Always good to hear managers who have had to struggle with the not so big teams, as opposed to Pep, Jose and co who have always worked with wealthy teams, rich teams of both. He came to Liverpool at such a turbulent time, with Hicks and Gillette and their leveraged buyout crippling the club with debt we could not afford. He would have won us the league if he had been backed consistently. We missed out on David Villa, Dani Alves and other great players for not being willing to pay the asking price (which wasn't that high). He always conducted himself with dignity and fought for what he believed was right. I love Klopp now, but back then I loved Rafa even more.

    Look forward to seeing what he can do with our players now he has arrived and appointed manager of Everton. He walks the walk and talks the talk. Our boys better listen.

    What a great guy, always very smart in his answers, garry Neville to criticise him is a joke, look at the time both spent at Valencia, 2 league titles and a European championship for Rafa, near relegation and sacked for Neville, still he has the class to not criticise anyone and talks about himself. Just pure class of a man. That's why the supporters always love him, no matter what anyone says about him he stays classy and sticks to facts. The love I have for Benitez after he left liverpool is still huge, even after Chelsea. He gave all the money that the owners paid from his contract to the Hillsborough familys, didn't say anything. Just true class.

    I'm a Spurs fan and have often found the brand of football that Rafa's teams play to be turgid. However, he's so interesting to listen to and I could imagine players wanting to play for him.
