I wanted to let you know what I did with your "Lionheart" Cologne recipe... I added 3 drops of Neroli Oil to it and it's Amazing! I'm calling it "Lioness" :) It truly compliments "Lionheart" too - For the FINE Smelling Couple ;) I thought you might like it too. :) God Bless!
i'm a woman but i only wear cologne, i love how it smells way better than traditional women's flowery and sweet perfumes.

This is really cool. As a distiller that loves essential oils, I had no idea this was an option for me. Im planning to distill my own oils from my garden this summer. Thanks for sharing!

It is!🥰
I’ll have to try this!
I hope you do! It's a great blend, if I say so myself!
This was great info. From the phototoxicity of Bergamot to learning about different notes. You explain and articulate well. Please make more on essential oils! I'd also be curious to know about difference in cheaper essential oils and more expensive ones and whether it really matters.

Try adding 3 drops of Neroli Oil to the Lionheart recipe and it will make it even More Amazing and a bit more feminine IMHO :) I did and I'm calling it "Lioness" and it works Well along with Lionheart :) Enjoy!

Just the information I needed. I've never made a perfume before, but last night I blended a little ginger and vetiver into some lotion to apply to my aching arm, and I was really surprised at how lovely it smelt. So this morning I have decided I would like to try to make a perfume using those two and found your video. Can you please recommend a suitable top note to go with ginger and vetiver. Also, for an oil based perfume (to be applied with a roller ball), what oil would you recommend? For using vanilla, can you use a good quality culinary vanilla essence, or is that different to a vanilla essential oil?
So well described, very inspiring, do you have a video for putting together a more feminine fragrance. THANK YOU 🤩
Coming soon! Yes, I'm getting quite a few requests to do some other fragrances. The nice thing about using essential oils is that you also get the therapeutic benefits, too!
Can you either put a link or describe more about the everclear please? Amazon had too many offerings for me to figure out which one. None looked like yours...thank you Heidi! Btw, I wanted you to know that this week's Encouragement and Inspiration from your email was incredibly helpful to my family this week. We have had a particularly hard year. So keep that part of your emails for sure. You are such a blessing in so many ways❤
Becky, thank you, thank you, SO much for letting me know you like that section of my newsletter. I really appreciate your words. Even though it's not herbal or homesteady, I think it's so important.... but I have gotten some negative reactions here and there. Thank you very much.
As far as the everclear---Try Extractohol. They are a Tesla company, and they have organic options, too.
Ive recently started making my own colognes and the 1st day wearing it i got positive feed back from Women an surprisingly men lol next week im making CottonCandy BubbleGum for more of an attraction from women trying to create something thats extremely irresistible 😊😊 FYI I loved your videoooo
Oh, wow! You made my total day! Thank you!
Hi Heidi! Such a lovely video with great explanation can't wait to try this, but could you suggest a carrier that's non alcoholic... Love from India!
You could use witch hazel/water combination, but the essential oils won't be dispersed, and also it won't be preserved. To offset this, you could use a solubilizer (you can buy these commercially) and a preservative. :-)
Oh essential oils are great. I use patchouli, and others. They use to have folks come by at the shoppe to sell them. You are awesome.😊
Archangel Michael
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy this scent!
What is the volume of Everclear to the essential oils that you used? You did not mention that. Thanks
thank you can't wait to make one, may i ask how can i make it with carrier almond oil?
10-15 drops of essential oil blend in 10 ml oil---enough for a 10 ml roller bottle. :-)
Hi Heidi, I loved your video it was the first one that popped up and I don’t even need to search for another. I did hear of others using 90 proof or 100 proof rum as their alcohol but does that fall under the same category as the vodka and Witch Hazel?
Also I was thinking of making a blend for myself that was more on the fresh and airy side so what do you think of these oils I’m planning to use:
Lime
Lemongrass
Vetiver
Patchouli
Frankincense
Thanks again!
Hi, and thank you so much! Yes, the lower proof alcohols will fall under the same categories as vodka and W.H. You really do need the high proof alcohol. And, I just love the choices you've got there! Play around with the amounts---you'll know when you have a winner!
What a great video! Thank you so much Heidi! I’d also like to try this mix of scents on my wool balls that go in the dryer, without the Everclear, lol. Can I ask what size spray bottle did you use?
Oh, boy---it's been awhile, but I think I was using a 1 ounce bottle? I think I mentioned this in the video? Hopefully someone will help answer this!
You didnt @@HeidiVillegas
Thank you for this wonderful and comprehensive video. :) I'm new to this and I was wondering about adding other things. Would some carrier oil be beneficial? Wouldn't that improve the "staying power?" I suppose the addition of any water or witch hazel would defeat the purpose of using 95% alcohol. Thank you
There are several ways to make perfumes....you can certainly make a roller bottle or solid perfume style with the lipid oils. You could also make up the stock blend and use it at a 1% dilution in body lotion for layering, too.
Thank you, Heidi, for the beautiful presentation. May I ask what size of the spray bottle you used in this video? 1 oz.?
I enjoyed your teaching very much!
Mei
Yes, these were 1 ounce bottles. :-)
I LOVE Lemongrass amd Ylang Ylang. I dont understand how people don't like Patchouli is smells amazing i put it on once and my wife and her grandma though I had on Moldy cloths lol. Apparently some people think it smells like Mold. My theory is that its people who have had mold exposure or toxicity and its detoxing it out.
That's an interesting theory and just might be spot on! I also love the scent of patchouli----in fact, mixed with clary sage, it's helpful for menopause symptoms. Maybe share this with your wife's grandma!🥰
Thank you for this information this is super helpful. Is it possible to make these perfumes using oils. I do not use or put any type of alcohols on my skin. Can I make this using an olive oil or grapeseed oil. Perhaps a roll-on perfume. Any suggestions would be wonderful thank you.
Absolutely! Just be sure to figure the dilution rate to 2% to 3% dilution for perfumes. This scent would be lovely that way!
I love your channel and have just recently seen it and subscribed. Can you confirm that the amber bottle you are using is a 2 oz bottle? It looks like it in the video. Thanks
Thank you, and welcome to the community! I made the video recipe for 2 ounces, but then ended up using a one ounce bottle for my dad. :-) You can adjust it for strength of scent to an extent. Just be careful of maximum dilution amounts for the specific essential oils. For example, a highly phototoxic oil like bergamot shouldn't be used at greater than 0.4% in a preparation. Just check all the safety for each EO, if you want different sizes. I hope this helps!
Thank you from nigeria
You're so welcome!
What is the special carrier and where can I find it
Wow I love this video! Do you know how long the scent lasts for?
It depends on how much you spray. But it's a more short-term scent. If you added a bit of light oil, it might last longer. :-)
@@HeidiVillegas Ok. Also, did you specify how many mL's of everclear you used?
Thanks, and dont mean to bother.
This was an amazing video. I want to make a solid cologne with beezwax and coconut oil base. Would the same proportions of the top, middle, and base notes be suitable for this?
Yes, it should! And the oils will hold the scent on the skin longer, too.
I love how you explain everything. I have a question, i have 1 0z of this oil mixture that smells amazing. I also have some perfume alcohol. How much perfume alcohol would I add to 30mls or 1 oz of oil? This is essentially a roll on oil cologne so its safe for skin, if that helps. Thank you in advance.
Thank you so much! I'm honestly not that familiar with perfume alcohol, so do some research on this, but it's likely you'd use the same dilution percentage as you would with high proof grain alcohol (195 proof), as I understand.
@HeidiVillegas yeah the perfumers alcohol I got is 200 proof so pretty much the same proof as you everclear. I've been trying to look around and I can't get a definitive answer. Everything is scattered. I appreciate the reply back.
I Love These Video and I want to make these mixture. Can you tell the ml of the Amber Bottle that you are using. Thanks
It's been awhile since the video, but I believe it was a 1 ounce (30 ml) or a 2 ounce (60 ml). Please double check in the video because I specified the ounce amount. :-)
Thanks
Love this what if i want it to be extrait de perfum level?
You would most likely change the dilution of the essential oils to a 20% to 40% and that's REALLY high. You'd definitely need to check the safety of the maximum dilution levels of each of the components to be sure it remains in the skin safe range.
I want to make my own Cologne collection and this is a good start thank you. My question about this is how many hours does it last and how far is the smell bubble so others can smell the sent
Good questions! I use a higher dilution than most colognes, and I'm going to guess the scent may last an hour or more-- this would also depend on the person using it, as some people retain scent better than others. The scent bubble will depend on how much is used---but you don't want people more than a foot or so away smelling it, really. :-)
What would be an ideal carrier blend for this so it's not overpowering or manipulating the intended scent profile?
Thank you.
If you're thinking about using a lipid carrier oil, I suggest something light, like grapeseed oil.
Thank you so much for the information. I plan to make beeswax candles and hope to use essential oils. Do the same rules apply for cologne and candles?
Not exactly, and this is because the heat burns off the essential oils very quickly. Do a little research on scenting candles before starting, and I would use less expensive oils, too. Good luck with it! :-)
@@HeidiVillegas Thank you. I did buy less expensive oils, fortunately!
Def going to subscribe. Hiedi where do you buy your oils from. Id love to try this . Plz lmk
Hi, Frank! Thank you! I purchase my oils from Starwest Botanicals, Aromatics International, Rocky Mountain Oils, Plant Therapy, Amrita Aromatherapy, Florihana, Pranayom, and Mountain Rose Herbs. I can definitely vouch for those companies.
Thanks Heidi! Can you please share a link or the full name of the Everclear you are using? Thanks in advance!
I usually head to Utah and just get everclear 190 proof.
Hello. Very good video. I am thinking of using this blend of essential oils in homemade beard wax. You talked about making a stock blend in the video. Can I make one (only using the essential oils) by using the ratio you use in this video to fill a 10ml och 20ml glass bottle, and then use that in the beard wax?
And how many drops of the blend would you use in a can with 60ml beard wax?
Yes, you can do this with your stock blend. For 60 ml, I suggest starting with a 1% dilution, since it's so close to the nose. That would be 12 drops of the blend. Then you can adjust for more, if you feel like you need to. :-)
Im making this for myself hehe
I hope you love it!
How much Everclear you add it in last.
What is the total percentage of the combined essential oils for your 1 oz combination? Is it at 3%? I'm also wondering if the Cardamom Essential oil is like the Clove one as if so, it shouldn't be more than 0.5% of the total dilution of your 1 oz bottle. If so, how many drops would be allowed. Three drops just seemed to be a bit high for me but I could be mistaken.
It's been awhile since I made this video, but I might have figured for a 2 ounce bottle, then split into 1 ounces? I'll have to watch it again. But for colognes, I usually do a 2% to 3% dilution....never higher.
Heidi Villegas Nice video, Im curious with this blend do you have to use alcohol?, I have seen people make oil blends with just the essential oil nothing else added.
Yes, it's best if you use the alcohol because it helps disperse the essential oils properly. It also preserves the cologne for a much longer time than just with water. Water sprays really should only be used for about a week without the proper amount of alcohol.
Hi, thanks for sharing, what size bottle did you use ( maybe I missed it in video)
If I recall (this video was done quite awhile ago), I think it was a one ounce bottle.
What base note would you recommend for a bergamot and juniper fragrance? Or can I just add bergamot and juniper?
Oh, gosh---those two would be so great all on their own, but a fixative (base) would be a good idea. This is a personal decision, but I bet patchouli would be nice, or sandalwood.
@@HeidiVillegas ah great thanks
I appreciate this video. I have 1 question 🙋🏾♀️ what does the alcohol do to the skin? Does it dry the skin out? Any info is greatly appreciated.
I haven't had this experience---dry skin. But we're all different. One thing you can do to offset it is to substitute a tablespoon of the water with aloe vera gel. Shake well, and that will help a lot. You can also sub 1 tsp of water for vegetable glycerine, too.
@@HeidiVillegas ahhh the Aloe will help. Thank you, your the plug thank you!
My husband likes cedarwood and thieves blend as part of his home made "cologne"- I put it in coconut oil and he rolls it on.
That sounds like a great combo!
Quick questions, is that a 2 oz bottle, and which frankincense oil are you using? I have the serrata, frereana and carteri.
Thank you.
If I recall (that video is a couple years old I think, now) that may have been a one ounce bottle, although I may have made the measurements for 2 ounces....you may need to have another listen. I was probably using Boswellia sacra, although any of them would be fine to use for fragrance. I know some perfumers like B. carterii best.
what size bottle do you use for perfume? thank you
It depends, but usually 1 ounce or 2 ounces.
I need some help... i have some oil musk colognes that i want to turn into a spray. Would everclear work for that too? I never heard if everclear before, when I google it, all I see is bottles of liquor... do I have to buy it from the liquor store? Or what do I need? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
I'm honestly not sure about that? I work with essential oils only, so the perfumery options I'm just not familiar with. Everclear (195 proof) is a good option to perfumer's alcohol, which is just as strong. It all depends on the state you're purchasing alcohol in. Some states sell high proof, and some don't. You can also try ordering it online, too.
Can a person make the base notes fruity like blood orange and the top notes cedarwood? And how will this effect the scent?
Unfortunately, the top notes are top notes because the odor molecules evaporate more quickly. So orange would not be a base note. You could play around with adding more orange, though, then grounding it with less of the cedarwood---it's an experiment!
When you used ever clear was it 190 proof? And can I use fractionated coconut oil instead of ever clear if I don’t have it available
Yes, I used everclear. FCO is totally different from the everclear---
Hi Heidi,
I’m feeling a little confused on why I’m sometimes not hearing about DPG being a carrier? Have you ever used it or do you know anything about it?
I want to make my son a cologne with essential oils. I have essential oils, rose water, DPG… just wanting to make sure I know that what I have is useful before I start mixing. :)
Hi, Delia! You could use it if you feel it's necessary, but you really don't need it with this method.
@@HeidiVillegas thank you. :) Do you know if DPG can be used in place of everclear or perfumers alcohol?
Hello! Where did you purchase your Everclear from? Is Perfumers Alcohol just as good? Thank you for the video!
Perfumers alcohol is GREAT! It's just kind of hard to get, so I just go with the Everclear. I have to get mine from friends who live out of state because I can't get it shipped here. Or...I cross state lines into Oregon.
@@HeidiVillegas oh, do you mean the actual alcohol Everclear?
I tried this and need some advice on what to add to this to offset the Patchouli. My daughter said it smelled like BO, (because of the Patchouli) and requested that I do not give it to my husband. I don't want to waste all these great essential oils. I sorta like the smell of Patchouli, but some obviously do not! Is there another oil that you know about that might mask the Patchouli smell? I want this essential oil project to be a success and blessing to my husband.
Oh, dear! Well, one thing to consider and probably the most important thing: What does your husband think of patchouli? He's the one who needs to enjoy it! Also, it's not super powerful in this blend, so perhaps add more of the other oils to offset the amount of patchouli.
@@HeidiVillegas That's good advice, I should let him smell it before I alter anything. If I find I need to add more of the other essential oils, are there certain oils that would be wise to try increasing first, so I don't go overboard?
Hey beautiful, l have a very hard time finding the everclear. I live in california, can you tell please were we can buy it? I search all the internet but just nothing, l found one everclear 95% and 190 proof on the venmo licor store on the website but it is out stock, thanks in advance and blessings 🤗
I've heard my students in other states say they like the Extractahol company....and you can buy organic from them, too. Also, Organic Alcohol in Ashland Oregon has a good reputation. They won't ship to states with laws against this (like my state). I'm not sure how CA is.
How is the finish of the perfume? Clear or Cloudy? I want to use clear bottles, thanks
I'm not sure, but I would guess clear, since there's so much alcohol. I always use the amber glass bottles as they help protect the liquid from UV rays, and even artificial light.
How much ever clear did you use mam ?
how do you know or find out what the maximum dilution rate is? Im looking at an essential oil that says 15% maximum topical use. so does that mean if I make some cologne with two essential oils I can't use 75% of that and 25% of another essential oil? can I use another essential oil as carrier?
It would be 15% of that specific essential oil in the whole product. :-) Essential oils aren't carrier oils. Those would be lipid (fatty) oils.
@@HeidiVillegas got it thank you. So im gonna make my own soon, I heard that jojoba oil or coconut oil is okay to use for a carrier.. is that right? or better stick with the alcohol?
What size perfume/cologne bottles are you using? How many ounces do they hold??
I believe in this video (it's been awhile) I was using one ounce bottles.
Will it make a good perfume if just mix Lime, Cardamom and Sandalwood?
And can I use coconut oil as solvent instead of Alcohol?
You could make a roller bottle perfume with fractionated coconut oil (which is liquid), but not a spray. The best thing to do if you're not sure about a scent if to take the lids of the essential oils and place them in your palm. Smell them together, and you'll get a sense if the combination will work. :-) Good luck!
May i ask, are there any essential oils out there that will give off a blueberry type scent.
Unfortunately, no. Fruits don't yield volatile aromatic oils, with the exception of the rinds on citrus fruits. Don't I wish, though?
Hey! How do you know how much carrier to add?
You decide on the percent dilution you want, and then you can determine the amount of the carrier oil. Also....if you want a certain amount, that will determine the amount you'll need as well.
What about adding fractionated coconut oil?
You could add this ingredient, and many do. It helps with solubility and some believe it helps protect the plastic in the spray part of the bottle from breaking down.
has any made this receipe? Does it smell nice?
Well, I love it, my dad loves it, and my husband loves it! :-) Many nice comments in the comments section too!
Excellent video! How do I make a small business out of this fantastic idea? I am thinking "Farmer's Market".
Also, what other "Recipes" for colognes-for-men are you willing to share?
Marketing to women, they WILL want a selection to choose from!!
I KNOW how expensive some of these Essential Oils can get! For the small spray-bottle shown & recipe shared, what would YOU sell this bottle for, for profit, of course?
Thank you, T! I think sprays like this would be GREAT at Farmer's markets and also online. I mainly make up the blends for family, friends, and clients, but I suppose I could make some more videos! As far as figuring out the cost, you'd need to figure out the per drop cost of the oils, then do the figuring from there. Then I suggest taking your total cost (including the bottle and the label) and doubling or tripling that amount so you make a little profit. :-)
@@HeidiVillegas Please! More recipes! You may not need a video; just how many drops of which oils! As sated, I think many of these oils will prove pricey! Experimenting could mean lots of (unavailable) dollars!
Do you recommend using any jojoba oil to help the longevity of the scent? If so, about how much?
I would say try making a solid perfume. Here's a formula you could tweak with this blend: czcams.com/video/p8cLrjklxWc/video.html
@@HeidiVillegasI meant it more as a “carrier oil” I’ve read about it on a few sites. Would you recommend using it in a spray or is it something that wouldn’t mix with the alcohol? Sorry I’m new to this.
I used to make roller perfume using fractionated coconut oil. This oil never goes bad, and works great with essential oils.I find that it works better than jojoba oil in my case and is colorless.
What about Vegetable Glycerin? Doesn’t that cause the fragrance to stick to the skin?
To an extent it may...
How long does it last? and how would you rate the projection
If it's preserved correctly, it will last up to a year and even longer. I really love it!
Can you substitute Vodka for Everclear?
Yes, just be sure it's 150 proof or higher. You'll still have to shake it before spraying if it's 150 proof, but the essential oils should mostly disperse just fine.
How many ml holds the bottle you use in the video and is it a 3 % solution you show us?
I was using a 3% dilution, and you can figure the conversion from ounces to mls on a google calculator! :-) I know that one ounce is about 30 mls, but do a double check....also without watching the video, I honestly can't remember if I used a 2 ounce or 1 ounce bottle. You may need to give it another watch. I make so many things, I forget sometimes!
I'm a 63 year old heterosexual man and I wear floral fragrances. IE Rose, Lavender, Jasmin, Their are no men and women's fragrances. Men in the 18th and 19th centauries wore all kinds of florals scents. The idea of men's and women's fragrance is all about marketing. Don't get me wrong, the video is informative and even fun to watch. But the concept of fragrances being for men or for women is like saying that pink is for girls and blue for boys. An idea that was invented by Queen Victoria by the way until then colors were just colors.
Thank you so much for this input and feedback! I'm definitely of an older generation, too, and you're absolutely right.
