It’s shanahan’s play-calling and game management in the second half. He always does this in their biggest games: gains a good lead, then just fumbles the bag and allows the other team to gain momentum and win.

Old guy here. This game, all football really, shows that the margin of victory or defeat is just so narrow, razor thin. This game was like a boxing match, 2 heavyweights throwing punches, some landings, some not.
I thought the Chiefs would rush or rattle Purdy into making some bad throws, leading to interceptions. To his credit, he did not. He did miss some short or deflected, but at this level of competition, that is what the game is all about. He attempted his passes, but the DBs broke them up, or they forced him to throw before he was ready so he missed the mark.
I believe the niners really missed an opportunity to put a strangle hold on the Chiefs when they got that INT, on a very bad throw from MaHomes, in Chiefs territory. They didn’t get any points from it. That’s got to be on the coaching staff. But the Chiefs defense held them back.
I didn’t realize how close the niners were to winning until I saw the replay of the Mcduffie blitz on the 3rd and 4 with about 1:57 left on the clock. That was a HUGE sequence. Now that you look at it, why didn’t instead of throwing the ball there, why didn’t they run it? At worst, if you don’t get it, you go on 4th down, it takes time off the clock and forces KC to use their timeouts. If you do get it, it’s same scenario but you kick the FG to take the lead. If you miss the FG, you leave MaHomes with about 20 seconds on the clock with NO timeouts, to go the length of the field to score. Almost impossible, even for him. If KC didn’t score, you go to overtime anyway. But to leave MaHomes and the Chiefs that much on the clock and 2 TOs, you knew they would get a FG. Turns out, they almost got a TD. On that play to KELce with 9 seconds left, Rice was open, but Patrick never looked at him. They just kicked the FG to go to overtime.
That whole episode of play calling for pass, and it failed, that’s on the OC or head coach.
The muffed punt was just bad luck, happens all the time in punting situations. It just happens. Why the 49er player didn’t just fall on it, is beyond me.
The blocked extra point was a real game changer. It shifted The Whole dynamic of the contest. I wonder if Dave Toub, the special teams coach, maybe saw something on tape that pointed to the niners weakness on their kicking line. Either way, great play by the Chiefs.
In OT, the niners had 3rd and goal from the 4 yard line. It’s that play where Sneed falls down and Aiyuk is wide open in the end zone. That’s the play where Chris Jones is unblocked and goes straight at Purdy. Purdy cannot get the throw off because he’s backing up for his life to avoid the sack, and throws it away out of bounds in the direction of another receiver. That led to their FG and the epic drive by the Chiefs to the SB win.
Great game, I think Shanahan screwed up a few times, not thinking ahead to the next level.

Another Old Guy and a lifelong Niners fan. Man, this one is going to hurt for AWHILE! You're right it was like an epic Heavyweight Fight. Great points you've made here, that blocked extra point really put some bad juju on our chances and I'd basically gotten over the loss until I saw the replays of certain plays. One was the punt return debacle, why oh why did Ray Ray McCloud not just fall on it? What was he thinking? The Super Bowl magnifies mistakes so much I think coaches should reinforce being hyper aware of doing the safe thing in those kick return situations. Just fall on the damn ball, you're not going to gain any yardage. I have to say I've never seen a weirder screwup on a punt return ever. Special teams really let us down. Then came the replay of the Niners third and goal when Chris Jones was unblocked. How in the hell can an O line completely sh*t the bed in the Super Bowl like that? There is no excuse whatsoever. A sure TD gone. Just a disgrace--I guess I'm glad that Spencer Burford came out and fessed up it was his mistake, but it really should've never happened. What absolutely killed me was Sneed the Chiefs excellent corner had fallen down and Aiyuk was wide open, along with Jennings who was also wide open at the other end of the endzone!! So now I'm gutted all over again.

I think passing it on 3rd & 4 was the right choice, unless you are planning on it being 4 down territory. If CMC only gets 1 yard or is stuffed, then these same people would question that as well lol. “No bro, you just go for it on 4th then.” Okay, well if that fails, then you would be saying “why didn’t Shanahan just kick the damn FG?” Lol. Hindsight is 20/20. Anytime a play doesn’t work, it will get questioned by fans, and that will never change.

  • @Wargasm54

Nah, game was lost in the 4th quarter. The niners had their foot on the Chiefs neck. Despite everything that happened, the niners had the ball in the 4th quarter tie game. All they needed was 4 yards for a first down. They were already in field goal range. 2 minutes left on the clock. They get a first down, milk the clock down to 3 seconds, kick the field goal, win the superbowl. 4 yards is all they needed. And they had 2 downs to get it. CMC could easily get 4 yards in 2 downs. They screwed the pooch. Once they gave the ball back to mahomes, they might as well have given him the Lombardi. Niners had it, and gave it away. Shanahan plays conservative, Reid plays to win. That’s why the Chiefs are champions and the Niners are not.

I like the Chiefs, but was hoping for the 49ers to win, since it would have been such a great story for Purdy to go from last draft pick to SB champion. The 49ers outplayed the Chiefs for much of the game, but could not put them away. If you dont, eventually Mahomes will come back to beat you.

You paid Trent Williams 140 million and he didn’t pass protect or run block? Shanahan is a bum and should never call an offense ever again. Brian Flores defense in Minnesota exposed them mid-season. Maybe he missed a few, but he also made some very nice clutch throws, and was under pressure much of the time. Considering the McCaffrey fumble, the muffed punt, and the blocked PAT, I certainly would not place the blame for the loss entirely, or even mostly, on Purdy. What it really shows is the difference an elite QB like Mahomes makes compared to a QB like Purdy who played well, but not exceptional.

Kyle Shanahan in his post-game said that they 49ers wanted the ball so that they could have the ball 3rd, meaning that even if they were held to a FG, they could hold the Chiefs too and then they would have the ball for the 3rd (sudden death) possession of OT.

If they would have traded field goals the first drive for each team and the second for each team, it would have kept going until one team scored an offensive or defensive touchdown. The time on the clock running down when the Chiefs had the ball was just the first quarter. If the Chiefs hadn’t scored a touchdown the game would’ve continued into the second overtime quarter

  • @JBullock54

I’d replace the decision to take the ball in OT with the blocked PAT. Every point is crucial. I understand the argument of knowing what you need if you defer to the Chiefs in OT, but if you go down & score, do you really want Mahomes getting another chance in sudden death?? It’s easy to armchair QB or coach the game when hindsight is 20/20. In the end, it was a great game. The 49’ers had the Chiefs down and frustrated in the first half, but they persevered and found a way to get back in it. Mistakes are always made, and were by both teams in the game, but Mahomes put the team on his back for much of that winning drive and that’s what makes him special. Also, happy to see Hardman return from a bad situation with the Jets and catch the game winning TD. Purdy handled the pressure well, when I was confident he would be their reason for losing the game. Instead, it was the performance of everyone else. The Chiefs defense is a lot better than they get credit for too. Spags is the best defensive coach in the NFL.

You missed a really big one... late in the game the niners are on the 6 yard line with a good chance of scoring a TD. Kittle has left the field (not sure why maybe an equipment issue) and the player who replaced him is called for holding, a 15 yd penalty so they're now at the 21 and they end up only get a field goal instead of a TD.
I'd also like to comment about the punt. Couldn't the whole thing have been avoided if he called for a fair catch? His job is to catch the ball - it's not below zero and it's not raining or snowing so just catch the ball so it doesn't hit his team mate's leg, and once he didn't catch it he made the problem worse by trying to scoop it up. The proper play is to fall on it.

I dont get your last one: The only cover zero i noticed was the 3rd and 6 in OT and Mahomes hits Rice kn the cross...and my thinking is really the opposite. You can zero blitz- BUT THEN COVER TIGHTLY ON SHORT STUFF! Yes, can get burned deep, but this KC team last 2 years are beating you mostly on short stuff. In fact, on my list would put that with how SF defense played well, there were 3 times late in the game where they played way too far back: The 1st 2 big plays of the Chiefs 2 minute drill before OT, 49ers gifted 25 yards on 2 easy completions. And in OT, after MVS went backwards to 2nd and 14, they let MVS get an easy 8, back to 3rd and 6.

Clearly Shanahan needs help in big game moments where an experienced head with previous SB winning pedigree will make the right calls. Keep Shanahan as the OC as he is really good in play design and bring in someone like Bellichick to be the head coach to oversee both sides of the ball and the game preparation. Let Shanahan continue to do what he is great at but take the load and stress from him.

Elijah Mitchell has 6 total carries in the entire playoffs, come on why is he on the team if we are not using him. Niners better draft some linemen to help the passing and running game.
