  • San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said that the 49ers taking the ball first in overtime was “better” despite losing Super Bowl LVIII. Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, Kevin Wildes, and Greg Jennings debate whether or not this was the right decision.

      To be fair, a big reason the Chiefs players knew about the OT rule was because of past / recent experience in the Pat's and Bills games. The Chiefs lived it in the recent past.The NFL would not change the OT rule until Bills Chiefs playoff match up 13 secs

      Coach Shannahan takes the ball and rests his defense. They just came off the field when the Chiefs tied the game. If he elects to kickoff, he had to put his tired defense back on the field against Mahomes and company.

    Coming from a Niners fan POV, this loss lies solely with Kyle. The hubris in his answer to OT says it all. To assume he knew how OT would play out and he would get a 3rd possesaion says it all. He also abandoned the run in the 3rd quarter for 3 straight drives of 3 and out. He also contradicted himself by going for it on 4th down when down in the 4th but then kicks a FG in OT. He allowed time to run off at the end of the 1st half only to take a knee. Mr. Offensive Genius couldn't make adjustments to being blitzed repeatedly on 3rd down leading to numerous unblocked defenders. The Chiefs won but Kyle was outcoached by Spags and Reid.

      @javinc1 RT has been an issue for years. As great as our skill position players are, our OL is average at best. Without Trent, it's below average. Add to that the fact Kyle never made adjustments to the blitz, and it was disappointing.

      His gameplan literally had Reid beat until they were gifted a muffed punt and XP miss. Greenlaw strapped kelce down to 1 catch until he got injured. He supposed to jump on muffed punts and kick XPs? Andy couldn’t get into the end zone until the end of the game and OT. Kyle was on pace to win until the ball bounced the other way. He’ll be fine. This team will get their ring. Eveyone needs to calm down

    • @justified004
      @justified004 Před 3 měsíci

      @dylscot Kyle made no adjustments. Just because he had KC beat at the start doesn't mean they are going to sit there and take it. Once Spags started blitzing, he never adjusted his "genius" game plan. There were 9 different plays with unblocked defenders, and each of those plays was at a critical moment. To blame a muffed punt and missed XP is cap. The Niners still took the lead after each of those. He got outcoached. On 3rd and 5 at the end of the 4th, he dropped back to pass and never accounted for the blitz that everyone knew was coming. Because it led to an incomplete pass, the clock stopped just after the 2 min warning given KC plenty of time to tie. He could have ran the ball to burn more time or one of their timeouts. He could have gone for it on 4th to seal the game and not give them the ball back. He went for it on 4th down earlier that quarter, so why not again. Same thing happened on his last play OT when he again didn't anticipate the blitz that, even Romo was screaming was coming. That was inside the 10-yard line and left points on the board.
      His arrogance about getting a 3rd shot never happened. Kyle has repeatedly shown an inability to adjust mid game. So don't say dumb stuff like he had them beat until something happened. Something always happens, and it's usually due to him not adjusting to begin with and snowballs the more he sticks to his game plan. Again, I'm a Niners fan and I have seen this man's arrogance and lack of accountability repeatedly. Good play caller, but average head coach.

    Actually, listening more about the playoff OT rule, I begin to understand why everyone is criticizing Shannahan's decision to take the ball first. There is no upside to take the ball first with this new rule. You simply CANNOT win the game no matter what you do with the ball first under this new rule, even if you score a TD. If you put it as simple as this, there is no way an informed coach would choose to receive first.

      I will grant that Mahomes and KC wouldn't be the team I would test out the new OT rules, but had SanFran held on either of the 4th downs during KC's OT drive then Shanahan taking the ball first would be seen as a smart move. Hindsight is 20-20, and San Fransisco had held KC for most of 3 quarters, At any time during those 3rd, 4th, and OT drives if San Fransisco had held KC from an answering score they would have won.
