Great Irish group singing a great song, written by a man brought up in Lancashire and born to Scottish parents, about the herring fishermen setting out from the port of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk to find the "silver darlings". Although there are many differences, we also have much in common and I think we should celebrate that. Shoals of Herring has become a song beloved by fishing communities and people with fishing heritage all round the world, as well as people who just like the song.
These boys brought our ancestry over here for us! What a truly spectacular song, and done so well. Rest in peace lads!
OH man... I am brought back to my childhood... my Dad loved this group, and played their music constantly... I have watched so many of these on CZcams... man I miss my Dad... he's singing these in heaven I am sure...
I'm in tears from the beauty. This was always one of my favorite songs, but I've never heard this particular performance. Gorgeous.
30 years since this beautifull performance
Great music for any occassion. God rest their souls
I grew up with these boys and they still sound great, Liam's voice could charm the birds out of the trees.
what ever you say they are fucking enjoying it!!! look at tom and paddy dancing and liam's eyes.
They enjoyed it
They sing to the Ancestors that live inside me. Forever may they sing.
The later incarnation of the group, Paddy, Bobby, Liam and Robbie O'Connell appeared for several years at the Los Angeles Irish Fair, back in the 1990s. I'd always request this song and they would always accommodate that request. I miss those old days, and Tommy Makem appeared there also with his sons a couple of times. It was grand!
Liam Clancy beautiful voice
They sing to the Ancestors that live inside me. Forever will they sing.
Legends, they'll live forever.
Saw them in Leeds U.K. my wife chased them down and got their autographs after the short trip in the pub.... gracious folks
Lemme see, I'm on about the 100+ listen to this video within the last several days, about 10 of those today alone......I never get tired of these guys! Thank goodness they left so much of their work behind for us to continue to enjoy.
Why can't we all just enjoy this with out name calling, insisting other versions are better, etc. I love the Clancy version but that does not mean others do not also do a great version. To each their own. The negativity is unbecoming to all of you.
+Kaitipoo I totally agree with you .A song is not written for one,but all.Jim.Liverpool.
A legend of a song, timeless and captures a time and a spirit never to be forgotten
What memories they bring back.Long live Ireland
Liam was known for his beautifully lyrical ballads, but this song also shows the strength and power of his beautiful voice.
The best ballad group ever
I gig this song 3 times a week in a mountain bar in the highlands, never thought about adding the moothie great sound and vocal. The book sounds like a good read I'll look it up now. Cheers for the upload.
Such a beautiful song sung by the best.
beautiful
God, keep the souls of these fishermen angels.
This song was the anthem of my boat- "Bonita"
Many times, in the storms of spring hunting, we were encouraged to listen to Liam and Tommy.
How many miles separate us; and destiny are so similar to us, may God protect Irish and Croatians and all the fishermen of the world.
They must be roasting in those jumpers.
A wonderful favourite-thanks for posting!
Usually listen to the Dubliners version but this is fantastic Too!😀🎙️🚢🐟🐟🇮🇪🎙️🎸🎼🎵🎶
Perfect!
The joy they communicate with this song is infectious
I love this video. Deeply grateful as I am from Ireland.
One of the greatest versions of a classic song
I love all of them, had and still do the records from those times. Loved all those times set me off running a folk club!!!
No great talent so did stand up between the acts But love them all.
They were all great performers and inspire me as they still do all these years later.
Thank you so much Menbehindthesweathers for up loading these classic songs. P.S. I might of said this before LOL
Beautiful
American Irish owe so much to the four of these fine singers. They opened the door to Irish music and history to some of us.The rest of us had a lot of it already from mom & dad.I know my sister,2 brothers and I did.The Clancys & Tommy Makem are the soundtrack of my young life and bring back memories of family & friends. That is undeniable and irreplaceable.Thank you fellas. You are missed.Tommy Makem had a great place on E.57th St.in Manhattan. Many good nights listening to him & Liam.
God rest all of them. We will never see their likes again. Ar Laimh dheis De go raibh siad. Amen.
Back When The Late Late Show Was worth watching
excellent
Such a great song and very well performed by this group! Both fun and solemn all at once.
Great rendition of Ewan MacColl's song.
superb stuff
Miss my boat and the sea
i love this song it reminds me of my grandfather.
I love that harp. On my trip through Ireland with a mandolin and harmonica I was very welcome. Both instruments were very scarce in de bar-jam circuit. I learned a lot those 3 months.
We actually watched this when we lived in CORK in the 80s
Tommy Makem made this group! Up Armagh.
A great rendition of a great Manchester song by a great Mancunian, Ewan McColl.
I'm singing along to this right now...
Written by the great Ewan MacCall. From the series for the BBC "Singing the Fishing" Lament for the end of the great Herring runs
So lovely with thanks from Israel
It sounds so proper
Beautiful beautiful beautiful and they are all gone now my they entertain the Lord almighty .
How fast 30 years goes by.
So true, so true....Life is fleeting......one must scoop up life by the handfuls and these wonderful souls surely did in every way...........God Bless them all
I love how much fun Tom always looks he's having singing.
yes.. he is great fun to watch...
Glen, they all are!!
no one sings it like the clancy's
Liam Clancy = Voice of God
Who sings this song better, Liam or Luke? I personally think Luke has the better voice but Liam can charm the birds out of the trees! I am just grateful that I was lucky enough to be born in the same era as these two icons.
RIP Liam
One of my top two favourite bands (along with Metallica).
I don't agree with you that the 84 reunion was poor at all. There is plenty of it on CZcams, thankfully, and I have no complaints about it at all.Imperfect at times? Yes - but none the less authentic for that. God bless the 4 of them. Lets hope every time we play to these videos they sit together somewhere and smile.
Liam takes some liberties with the lyrics but he has a fantastic voice and this is the definitive version of Ewan MacColl's great song.
This is music, it's universal. This is no place to blurt out politics.
Someone should write a song about fork truck driving along these lines, it could have a bit about sitting all day on my sore sore arse.and finish with a guitar solo, i will not accept any royalties on this idea.
good version but luke kelly owns the song but then again he owned every song he sung
RiP Liam
That's great stuff not gteat but anyone out there who loves this track must listen to Luke Kellys version it is absolutely stunning
Ewan Mcoll wrote this song. you can find it on youtube, but Liam sings this better than anyone.
I'm not a hater, I LOVE them but when they were singing the part where they "left the home grounds in the month of June" Liam messed up and forgot the words for a sec but he saved it. Good job Liam 👍😋
Curious ... I found a CZcams clip of the entire Late Late Show tribute and this is missing from it. Why?, I wonder
26+6=1
if it was,t for these fishermen the rich would have no kippers
Very good, I prefer Lou Killen's version though.
better than lukes version???
YEP GOOD BUT AS SOME1 ELSE MENSIONED LUKE KELLY OWNS THIS 1
EIRE
It's an English song. ;) Erin gu bragh, and England too!
This is great, Lukes was much better
Gteat stuff but luke kelly does it even better
God he ripped Gaye in two there so subtly
