My 4 Remedies for Managing Lower Back Pain

  • I've had lower back pain for about 25 years, and it was only in the last 10 years that I finally figured out how to manage not just the amount of pain, but the duration of the pain. In this video I talk about pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs like Tylenol (acetomenophen), Advil (Ibuprofen) and Alieve (Naproxen Sodium). Then I talk about the best advice a doctor ever gave me which was to stand and walk rather than lay down. Similarly, doing stretching and strength building exercises have really helped. Finally, I'll talk about a new device that I saw an ad for on Facebook called a Lumbar Decompression Belt - it looks silly, but it seems to work.
These things have really helped with my lower back pain and sciatica, but I'm not a doctor or physical therapist, so what works for me may not work for you, and you should consult a doctor before trying any of this.
Here are the CZcams videos that I like to use for stretching and strength building:
HASfit "25 Min Lower Back Exercises for Lower Back Pain Relief"

ACTIV CHIROPRACTIC "One Minute Sciatica Exercise"
    • One Minute Sciatica Ex...
ACTIV CHIROPRACTIC "3 Top Spinal Decompression Techniques"

There are dozens of companies/people advertising the Lumbar Decompression Belt on Facebook and Instagram, but the one that I bought for $89 was Klop Orthopedics: kloporthopedics.com Don't let the name fool you - it's just someone in China selling these. It took 5 weeks to receive mine, but then Coronavirus may have played a part in that slow delivery.
    0:00 - Introduction
    2:03 - Naproxen Sodium
    5:07 - Stand & Walk

Most of people think that loosening tight muscles would eliminate their pain, but you SHOULD know, that lumbar compression is happening, yes because of long periods of sitting, but ignore that the deep paravertebral muscles (extenssores) and abdominal muscles and abdominal muscles that insure the stability of your lumbar spine getting weak, which causes the compression, and sciatic problems. So everyone has to moove, to workout a bit their spinal muscles, and the to stretch. Don't loose you money and don't hope that thos gadgets gonna do miracles for you, at least its gonna be for a while, just moove, just be gentle with your spine, with your body!

Thanks Brian, that's a very helpful video. I have had back problems for over 20 years - they come and go - but it sounds to me as though I have the same kind of issues that you do. I am trying the decompression belt for the first time today, and I am hoping for good results.

The lumbar support does actually help, I've had one for about a year. NOW, if I could find something that works for shoulder & neck pain, I would be ecstatic!

Thank you so much for your wisdom!
I'm 26 and woke up this morning feeling like I have the flu and been experiencing severe lower back pain all day. It's a type of back pain that I've neverrr felt before in my life!
I've been laying down for the past 9 hours and it's only made my back pain feel worse. All I've been able to do is toss and turn and moan and groan.
Now after coming across you video, I took some aleve with naproxen sodium (which I had no clue I had in my Cupboard!) and started walking around. Now it's only been 30min and my pain has gone down by a solid 40%. Hopefully in the next hour It'll relieve my pain 100%.
Again, many thanks. This was such valuable knowledge!
Edit : it's been 2 hours and I feel no pain. I'll actually be able to fall asleep. Thank you!

Brian, since you're in the US, I'd also strongly recommend checking out MedX spine strengthening therapy. That's the only name I remember and it was invented some time ago, maybe the company has a different name now, I don't know. It isolates for one of those spinal movements that are otherwise hard to do, yet very vital in spinal health. It is actually possible to simulate the movement with free weights, but I wouldn't advise it since unless you have plenty of experience with lifting weights, you might easily do it incorrectly or even pull your back doing it.

Good video. I have the EXACT same decompression belt that you have and also have had some good results from it. I paid $35 for it. It's an inexpensive knock-off of Dr. Ho's decompression belt that he sells for $135 on Amazon.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Starting to go thru it all. Looking at the belt. Can the belt be worn for longer periods. Read that stretching back allows for more blood flow to
    Disc material thus healing etc
I also bike when I have a flair.

I'm not sure how long or what the max time is that they say to wear it, but I don't go more than 1 hour.

@@BrianGreenstone Hello…..your video is so meeee . This lets me know Im not alone. You dealt with it for 15 years me about 8years. This flare up started in April of this year and is still going. I just ordered that belt and received it yesterday. And today Im seeing your video and Im like, wow! The belt is working some what. Like I said I just got it yesterday and was about to return it. But once I got home from work I put it back on and have had it on a few hours now. So I may be keeping it because right now Im not hurting. Also what you said about Aleve is so true it is the only thing that takes the edge off and gives me some mobility. The prescription drugs the doctor gives me mostly helps the most when Its time to sleep but sometimes that’s unbearable. But I wonder what else is in Aleve because its the best. Thanks for your video I back everything you said, lol

For your excellent dash cam reviews and because you live in my city, I'll share this but don't tell anyone. Watch this Jack LaLanne interview, czcams.com/video/2qKgIHXWTTo/video.html he gives an exercise for lower back pain - it helped me to forever get rid of these periodic episodes, by doing it 3 times a week. I had them for several years until around 2012 when I started doing this. I lift the dumbbell about 25 lifts on each side, and the weight is such that I could probably do it 50 times - but this is my own invention because he didn't specify the weight. I started with maybe 10-15 lifts to be careful. Like LaLanne says, "you can only hurt the body by not using it." If you do it, please post your result here in a year.

why does it need to be deflated, can't someone just wear the same on every day?

    • @BrianGreenstone
      @BrianGreenstone  Před 2 lety +1

Doesn’t work that way. You have to inflate it after putting it on or it won’t do anything.

It does need to be reset each time you take it off for it to grab and push/stretch your lower back. 🙂
