- Dreaming of a better life, many individuals were inspired to make the harsh trek westward at the turn of the 19th century without the assurance of home and family. The rise of boarding houses presented a solution to this insecurity while challenging social and cultural conventions of gender, race, and class; and at one point housed one third of Americans. Discover how the adaptable nature of boarding houses like the Astor House, Hotel Jerome, and the Peck House allowed for their survival despite mining busts and the end of railroads.

My 'boarding house' upon arrival to Denver, Colorado was the YMCA . . 2 blocks east of what was to be the 16th Street Mall and two blocks north Colfax Avenue. Therein was my initial pad, when arriving from Minot, North Dakota . . . and, Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force. Later took up my undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado-Denver, and shared an apartment with a fellow student . . . bout 5 blocks east, of the capitol building of Colorado.
My grandfather was a mining engineer and stayed in a boardinghouse 1900-1902. Thanks to Google, I have a picture of the same house!
Thank God for these entrepreneurs. I lived in one when it was all I could afford.
Me, too! In fact, I live in one now.
I've stayed in boarding houses since I was 18. They don't call them that anymore though. They call them "room shares." The hardest part for me was that the people renting the rooms out wanted my money, but not the human being handing over the money There isn't the comradely or family type atmosphere anymore.
Exactly.
Beautiful...Thank you so very much..Nostalgia on steroids.
Astor House would be a great place for 12 step meetings of all kinds. They'll pay rent and there's the same comoroadaity(
Except a bed and breakfast is the most expensive place to stay. Hardly the same.
Agree, also not true with her calling AirBnB boarding houses. There is no community when one rents another's private home or apartment. Quite the opposite as AirBnB'ers couldn't care less about their overnight neighbors.
Who and when did we agree to taxes? I noticed a theme in this video...
Thank you.
I've noticed that the main reasons for owners loosing these hotels all involve taxes.
Nothing changed. From then to now. Only the names.
I'm sure you meant "losing".
GREAT VIDEO!!!
Everyone was dressed in their best clothes for the pictures.
Wow!
A fascinating look at American social history, but in Walt Whitman’s quote, what or who is/was a “counter jumper”, it sounds like a petty crook holding up a store and jumping the counter to get at the till (cash register), I doubt it but it’s the only thing that springs to mind, could someone enlighten me please. Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative film 🎥😀👍🇬🇧🏴
I used to go grocery shopping with my mother during the late 1950's in a small general store. All the goods were lined up on shelves behind a clerk, who would retrieve requested items. They had a long mechanical grabber for cans on the upper shelves. Occasionally they had to climb a rolling ladder to get a heavy or awkward item. When the clerk's back was turned, items in the glass display cases would be vulnerable to pilferage from someone reaching over. I am not sure this explains the "counter jumpers", but since our general store dated to the 1850's it is a possible explanation.
Forget what I just said. Upon researching, I see that a "counterjumper" was derogatory term for a lowly shop clerk.
Miners, not minors!!
Or maybe both! 😜
There are still people that want to live that way. Get two or three guys together along with 3 chicks. Everyone sleep in the same sack. No thanks.
I'm 62 years old and never have met 6 people that want to sleep in the same bed, I've been in plenty of housemate situations, this never was rven suggested, in 2022 how dare you refer to women as chick's, who do you think you are? Obscene ideas, ridiculous, uneducated
I've long thought that boarding houses were an excellent idea, especially for singles who don't have the time money or inclination to maintain their own household. It has a lot to do with women's roles in society and their ability to borrow money to start a business.
Are you kidding me!
