Thanks for your video, the key to motorcycle travel is riding a bike you are comfortable with, I had a Yamaha XT660Z for years, great bike, but I was never comfortable with it, too tall, I recently bought a Dakar without even test riding it and it fits like a glove, plush soft suspension, low enough for short people, great fuel economy, enough power from the Rotax engine. The Dakar is an underrated bike, simple enough for the home mechanic to service. I have over 40 years of ADV riding so I have some knowledge of riding all these years.
Good job! I have one the same, which I'm just starting to do European trips on, then beyond when I can... Glad you're enjoying the bike, and thanks very much!
hi good flog .... i have a gs 650gs and problems are water pumps and fuel pump a and i am about to change front sprocket from 16 teeth to 15 better for slow off road travel ... thx from scotland
@@travishardaway6348 I got my current sheepskin from a guy in Bosnia selling it on the side of a read :) Attached by wedging it under the seat as I push it down.
@@martyn_g Hi, my feet are not flat on the floor for sure. However, I don't mind being on my toes / end of my feet. Have I fallen off occasionally when I'm on uneven ground? YES! However, I don't mind, whilst riding, it's the perfect ride for me and handles the toughest environments.
The sheep skin is the icing on top of the cake awesome bike great setup.
I've had my '05 for 3 yrs and love the damned thing.
Beautiful none pretentious video 👍🏾 I have a 2003 Dakar and I like what you’ve done with your front fork setup 👏🏾 ✌🏾
Have a 2003 f650gs Dakar as well, stoked to see the upgrades, super clean build man! All the essentials!

I put a 15 tooth front sprocket on mine. It made a lot of difference. 👍🏻👍🏻

What a good straight forward video. Really informative and lots of food for thought. Did you say the front wheel was off the same 250 as the forks?
O
Yes, it the Yamaha YZ wheel
Great vid! Are you always riding on studded tires?
Yeah, I was doing a lot of 'off road' in Africa.
I'm looking at buying a 2005 Dakar. Thank you for the GREAT review! I never thought about the sheepskin. Where can I buy one and how is it attached?
His was custom made. You could probably buy one online though.

Hi Matey, Was the Yz forks straight bolt on or did you have to change anything els ?
Thanks
My friend did the fork change, and yes, I think there were a few additional mods. There's info online about the total mod.
Yz 250 forks. year ?
2001 i think
how tall are you?
That's an odd question. Anyway I'm 176cm
@@65dan65 haha not really odd, some of us didnt see the bike in live so we dont know how big it is and does it fit the tall riders :)
@@65dan65 hahaha bro it's not really odd
@@65dan65 when seated, your feet are just touching the ground? (You’re the same height as me;)

Would you sell it
Hi Tom,
whilst I haven't been on a long trip for a few years, I wouldn't sell it. Too many memories...
Why not get rid of that spare exhaust can ......weight savings...!?!
Good question. I did have an after market Scorpion exhaust but I didn't like the additional noise so I out the original one back on
