I think one of my favorite aspecs of this rebuild is that you're doing it by yourself. Lifting that ceiling joist up your self and having the other end fall off the ladder is something I've done a dozen times- especially with drywall. But God love you for pushing forward on making this happen. hopefully you'll breakdown the cost comparison between rebuild yourself versus hiring a crew to come in an demo and start anew.
You should install OSB horizontally on a roof rather than vertically due to the strength axis. Also your laying them down with the stamp side up, you should flip them over. The stamped side is slicker so its more of a hazard walking on it on a roof. It gives you the layout lines on the outside l, a slightly rougher surface for walking on, and it puts the stamp on the inside so an inspector can verify what OSB was used
You didn’t even mention the most noticeable mistake he made when laying the osb

Knowing that some of the stuff I saw might be questionable, I scoured through the comments searching specifically for comments from tradesmen and industry professionals. They all have valid points, however kudos to you. It might not all be 100% to industry standards, but the structure and roof is a lot more stable and secure than it ever was before, and knowing you did it yourself and learned a lot in the process is where it matters. Would have been a lot easier had the roof initially had the proper spacing between rafters. What you did works and I appreciate watching someone battle a project and figure it out than pay someone to do it for you.
Couple things.
You should have had the electrical mast moved. It can come up through the soffit at the very edge of the roof (if not removed and rerouted completely)
Your sheathing needs to lay perpendicular and have the edges land on the middle of the rafters....
hes obviously not a carpenter lol he will learn when someone re roofs that and falls through the ceiling
I'm not a carpenter by any means but trying to make sense of some of the comments. When you say 'have edges land on the middle of the rafters', are you referring to the part that he has overhanging the driveway with no support underneath?
@@Blake44622 No. The cut edges need to land on a rafter. Some of the pieces he's cutting, the ends are landing in the middle spacing meaning there's no support. Even putting a backer board so tie them together doesn't stop that part from sagging later on.
Buildit knows a lot more about word working than I do, but even I was shocked to see him installing the OSB and not cutting it to land on a rafter and just letting it overhang 😳 that’s basics right there
Helpful tip: whenever you roof lay the osb sideways and always make two ends land on the seam so you can nail into the joist and don't have any dips in your roof👍

Also roof OSB should have the stamps facing down toward the attic side and the black nail guidelines facing upward. Think you were upside down, not a big deal but helps for nailing to your rafters and the surface is easier to walk on when your doing your ice/water and shingling later ! Great vid though keep grinding!

yeah no offense you are putting in some serious hard work and this shit looks difficult and dangerous at the same time, but that first OSB you put down is dangerous, you always want your osb edges to always line up with the rafters. that seem right there with no support under it is a severe weak point. and years down the road when whoever steps on it may think its secure, but they will just fall right through it. in addition, those ridge beams need replaced, i agree with your statement this thing should have been 100% demo'd and rebuilt from scratch

Put in some blocking to keep the rafters from twisting.
So you’ve essentially replaced the outside walls, the rafters, ceiling joists, a large portion of roof sheathing and shingles. At what point would it have been easier if not cheaper or faster to demo and start fresh?
Very entertaining to watch your videos. You are the most hard working person I’ve seen. Everyone watching would have bulldozed it or burned it down. That said, using sheet goods (drywall, plywood, OSB). The edges need to meet on a framing member and run perpendicular. And the side with lines go up. This side is tougher to walk on. The other side is smooth to lay flat on the framing members. Keep it up and get through it.

excellent work, and a lot of it. Makes for good content, but this is a huge lesson for anyone considering projects like these. Yes, it may be more expensive in the short term, but it pays dividends in the long run to either demo and rebuild or just rip the entire roof in one shot and replace what's needed.
Rafter ties do not prevent the walls from pushing out. Properly supporting the ridge beam prevents that.

Amazing work. My wife's cousin purchased her mothers home after she passed. Ran into similar issues you had. Contractor took out a loadbearing wall during a remodel in the 90's. The roof was falling in and the walls were being pushed out. He started with the rafters then redid the walls but it was a hell of a lot of work.
Clearly courage and sweat isn't just an empty sales pitch, you really gave it your all !!

This project is taking me back to my garage "remodel"/rebuild, had multiple walls needing half replaced due to rot, had to replace some raftors or tie/sister in where the original was just rotten on the end which made nailing the new decking a little challenge so in hindsight just replace when needed but because of how sketchy things were I didn't feel comfortable removing too much at once.... you live and you learn.
I wasn't sure of the direction of this channel a few years ago, but this house build is really pushing your limits and its cool to see you adapt to the challenges.

Have been watching your videos for a long time - initially they were for mostly entertainment purposes as well as learning things as you did projects around the house. With this garage video series (and especially this one) the respect for you has gone through the roof (sorry, no pun intended). Sorry in advance if this video ends up being long.
I started my basement finishing project back in Summer of 2020 (while going through temporary company furlough at work since everything was shut down at that time). After all the detailed planning, I got done with framing and HVAC but for electrical it was a real pain as - after calling 6 electricians and getting quotes from only 2 of them (I guess they were quite busy during that time due to the construction boom) - one of them finally showed up in Jan/Feb of 2021. As you can imagine, it was quite disheartening. But this was just the start.
Few weeks later, we got news that our local school district would be re-zoning and we might end up in one of the less desirable school zones for our high school kids - which meant that we might have to move depending on the outcome of the re-zoning. The re-zoning decision would not come until June 2021. We built this house back in 2006 and have lot of memories here and this news of re-zoning in the middle of a basement finish project and the possibility of having to abandon that and move to a different house took the wind / enthusiasm out of us. But it does not end there.
The school board's decision came in June 2021 after what seemed a really long time and fortunately we stayed in the same school zone and did not need to move. So I got a bit encouraged that we could resume the basement finish project. So next step was sourcing the insulation. I wanted to go with mineral wool insulation for better sound isolation.
Unfortunately, by June 2021, the supply shortage issue was in full swing. Furthermore, I needed to get mineral wool insulation in an uncommon size since our floor joists in the basement ceiling are 24" apart (as opposed to the more common 16" on center). Most of the times, the 24" mineral wool was not even special - order-able at local stores (Home Depot, Lowes or Menards) and any stock they would get would get picked up by local builders. Even more disappointment. But it does not end there.
In August of 2021 we had a pretty bad thunderstorm roll through our area and our house got struck by lightning - and we lost lot of things (2 TVs, 1 computer monitor, several GFCI outlets in kitchen, garage and outdoors, newly installed belt drive garage door opener, an entire room of electrical outlets installed in basement by electrician just few months prior, water heater controller and I am sure I am forgetting a few things). All this on top of the challenges of the basement finish project listed above. So we ran to Menards to pickup a new garage opener and replaced the broken one next day with an identical new one. And continued repairing / replacing other things slowly as / when we could find time between our regular day jobs and driving kids around for after school activities. But what do you know - around October of that same year, the brand new garage door opener started having issues of its own. It would work couple times before it would stop working in the up position and requiring unplugging and resetting the entire thing. Call to Chamberlain and they diagnosed the issue to be likely faulty logic board - but guess what - parts shortage meant they could not promise when we would get the replacement logic board. Talk about one bad luck after another.
And hopefully you can see why - since Winter 2021-2022 I have not been as enthusiastic about doing projects around the house (including basement finish).
After that long winded sob-story, when I see your own garage rebuild series and the disappointment in your eyes as you find out the numerous unexpected twists/turns BUT at the same time in the videos like this you continue to hustle and push through, it gives me some motivation and inspiration to pick up on my own projects.
Sorry for the long winded post but thanks a lot for the inspiration to hustle and push through after being down and out for so long.

Just saw this video. I'm age 21 and did gymnastics for 14 years. I got into house remodeling from a property management company and then on to Menards when pandemic began and then to being hired full time for a construction firm. I would have loved to have pitched in on the sagging roof situation. It would have been fun. It looks solid and great. $1500 for materials is not bad given all the work it does.

For your roof sheeting there is spacer clips you are supposed to install between sheets.

@Mr. Build It - Hey dude! I work in the roofing industry and after you put the OSB boards up, it’s important to put synthetic underlayment next and then the shingles! Installing a roof is one heck of a job, but excited to see what happens on the next episode!

Great work! Just out of curiosity did you consider having an electrician come out and move the electrical point to the edge of the roof instead of having to seal up a hole around it?
Looks good I think they put clips in between the plywood sheeting on your roof to give it the proper gap.
This was great, power to you for knocking this out. At that point I would have just brought my stuff up on the roof and set up shop there instead of the up and down!

You should have framed out your over hang on your front barge before you sheeted it. You could have easily added your outriggers and barge fascia before sheeting that area.

Great job! Attitude gets the job done. Would a psl or glu lam beam have been easier to jack up to the existing ridge beam? With 4x or 4x posts at each end and maybe intermediate posts in interior walls to help distribute the load?

That two by four you laid flat on your ceiling joists run another two by sideways then you've built a rat run then run your beam supports down to it I've been doing this a very long time and you corrected the problem without a lot of experience congrats for job very well done also put your coller ties as close as you can at your beam

That’s a ridge board. It doesn’t bear any weight. If it was a beam the rafters would sit ontop of it and it would be supporting weight. Looks like several individual rafters are sagging and pushing out from the lack of collar/rafter ties.
Also the mast for the service feed is not high enough.
