    I'm learning so much! I had no idea my hair was actually wavy/curly until recently...for decades I just thought I had huge, dry, fluffy hair. I just had no idea I was pulling it, brushing it, and drying it straight. This is all so helpful and I see such a huge difference in the health of my hair!

  • @imyourhappydrug
    @imyourhappydrug Před 2 lety +42

    I recently started using conditioner before shampoo as well as after and it's a game changer. My oil heavy conditioner I was using when my hair was dry works perfectly to break up styling product residue before I shampoo. I now use a lighter conditioner after shampooing instead now that my hair doesn't need as much moisture :)

    • @shannonepplett7890
      @shannonepplett7890 Před 2 lety

      Just a clarifying question... you leave the conditioner in then shampoo, right?

    • @imyourhappydrug
      @imyourhappydrug Před 2 lety

      @@shannonepplett7890 Mostly, yes. I drench my hair, add conditioner from root to tips, let it sit for a moment while I shave, make sure it is very wet again before adding shampoo for maximum suds, apply shampoo to the roots, use a gentle scalp scrubber brush under the flow of the shower while rinsing it out then apply conditioner from ears down and let it sit while I wash my face, squish to condish, gently do a final detangle of the hair with a wide tooth comb or tangle teezer and exit the shower to put my hair straight into a microfibre turban.

    This helped so much, Gena! Especially the tip about washing and all upside down. I've been doing that lately and I've definitely noticed a difference but I didn't know why. It's the fuller cuticle. Thanks! Now I'm off to watch your 8 styling mistakes video 😊

  • @Cat-no8ts
    @Cat-no8ts Před 2 lety +15

    I thought I was nuts when it came to conditioning my hair because I, too, was under the impression that when you conditioned your hair you were to not condition the roots because you wouldn't get lift or volume! I'm glad to know that even hair that is dryer, high porosity or lightweight, still needs conditioning even if it's just a glaze over. Also I was basically indoctrinated to wash my hair upside down probably since childhood, typically in the sink! But it's good to know that washing my hair in a vertical position, i.e. my hair in the shower, is actually better off because I'm following the cuticle and it means smoother, less frizzy results. Great video Gina. I'm glad I found your channel!

  • @ElaEG
    @ElaEG Před rokem +1

    I tried some of your tips yesterday when I washed my hair, specifically, dry detangling with an oil and applying a small amount of conditioner prior to shampooing. I also tried manipulating my hair less during diffusing, as I've observed that too much manipulation does cause more frizz (and I think I remembering you mentioning it somewhere). I tend to wash and style my hair in the evening and let sleeping on it (with a bonnet) break the gel cast. This morning I did have only a minimal amount of frizz, but my hair was also less full and less curly than usual. My hair does look good, but I like a fuller curlier look. I do appreciate your tips and will continue to tweak them till they work for me. This is clearly a work in progress. Thanks for your videos! 🙂

    Gina, this is such a helpful video! You explained a lot why for me having super low porosity hair warmer water and wet styling is the only way my hair absorbs product. Cold water and damp hair only make the products sit on top and build up really quick! PS: my hair tangles very little. Thank you Gina!!

    I know I'm late to the video but I'm not understanding the issue with washing upside down. The hair is still falling in the same direction (root to tip at the bottom), just in front of your face instead of behind it... and you're still running your hands root to tip, the same way the cuticles go. The only real issue is getting it to fall naturally afterward (flipping it back).

    Such an interesting point on washing upside down. Everyone promotes it but I only find my wavy bleached hair looks terrible after I've done that. I can't leave conditioner on for long because it's uncomfortable and when I flick it back over the shape and tangle is just horrible. It always looks ugly 🤣 I'm going to try the conditioner shampoo conditioner tonight. I really struggle to get my top layer to wave. Its always frizzy no matter what I do, I'm blaming the bleach 😒

  • @caratstayarmyblinkigot7onc489

    - untuggle hair with oil before bath, during bath with conditioner before washing
    - conditioner first then shampoo then conditioner
    -clarifying shampoo ( not too usually)
    - normally not upside down
    - dont skip conditioner
    -conditioning almist everything just not the inside in scalp. Just pass on top of the scalp with your hands
    -running fingers through hair to untagle.
    -deep conditioning 1-4 per months - (from twist)
    -use warm water. Not too cold or too hot
    -using cotton fiber to dry it out. Not common body towel.

    1) What oil were you using when deranging your hair?
    2) What Twist Shampoo and conditioner do you use if you are NOT clarifying and NOT deep conditioning your hair?
    3) Do you ever use a Twist Leave-In Conditioner or only the Curl Lotion and then gel?
    4) Do you always style your hair while standing upright once you are out of the shower?

    Curly hair issue: never heard anyone talk about this. My curls will be elongated in the middle for whatever reason - weight, etc. but they’ll be ROUNDER and LOOSER at the ends. Hate it. Absolutely hate it. Ir ruins volume, concentrating it at the ends and contributes to triangle hair. What can help?

    If you have 3b spirals curls like me...the worst thing you can do is try to detangle your hair until your done shampooing and have tons of a good conditioner with a good slip. And then again just before you put all your products in by putting a good leave in conditioner and with a wide tooth pick distribute evenly. I really think it's important to say the type of curls you have, as anyone with tighter curls then yours like mine or tighter curls...this would not be a good idea...it would actually create damage.

    I personally don’t like to just let the shampoo run down my hair because to me that’s not clean enough. We put a majority of our products on the ends of our hair so it makes sense to make sure it’s washed. I don’t shake and mix the hair but I take shampoo and apply it almost like praying hands method and very lightly somewhat squeeze it into the hair and then lightly rub in small sections..not rubbing into the scalp or anything. I find this to be helpful for me to wash my hair in addition to washing my scalp. To each his own and whatever works for everyone will be different 🙂

    Very informative video, thank you! Do you think it's ok to use conditioner or oil to dry detangle if you're using a cowash? I alternate cowash and shampoo. I thought it may not be fully removed on the cowash days?

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, it may not be necessary when just using a co-wash because it's so mild anyways. You could either dry detangle first (with a little or no oil), or just apply a little cowash or conditioner to wet hair to detangle first, the cowash the scalp like normal.

    Gena: what about on a day you are going to COLOR? Like, before I go to the sslon?

    • @GenaMarie
      @GenaMarie  Před 2 lety

      If you want to dry detangle before you go, you could do that and just put it up in a bun. If you have a lot of buildup you may want to clarify first to make sure the color penetrates well, but its best to ask your hair stylist because they will know best if that's needed or not with their hair dye.
