Desmond was a fabulous batsman, a player of absolute class. A batsman with rock solid technique & a variety of strokes. Not surprisingly he was known as Mr Dependable.
This was a poor series for Desmond Haynes, and it finished 2-2, but a couple of things stood out to me, one was the lords test was rained off with West Indies 12-2, and Haynes in with Hooper, would have liked to see those 2 bat for a while, Greenidge was injured in the ODIs, and Phil Simmons opened, and wasn’t really suited to English conditions, also the final test at the Oval, Haynes carried his bat for 75, while the rest of the batting lineup slogged their wickets away to Phil Tufnell, West Indies followed on and set England around 140, and the scores were tied, when Ramprakash was dismissed for one of his many 20s in the series, An elderly man who shouldn’t have been playing hit the next ball for 4 off the fearsome medium pace of Clayton Lambert, and in the papers the next day, the headlines were “beefy hits the winning runs”😂, what a surprise
