  • Piaf in technicolor singing an anthem of the Women's March on Versailles, a signficant event in French Revolution. No longer the mournful tragedienne in black and white with tales of love and heartbreak, rather a spirited revolutionary singing boldly with brio and conviction, "The aristocrats to the lamp posts." It was the aristocrats who brought street lamps to Paris, now the people would see them hanging from them. The women stormed Versailles, demanding simply bread, which had been limited and overpriced for the people, while the royalty threw great banquets for themselves.
For the historical background of this song, go here:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27...
    • Ça ira
The" Ca Ira" was said to be inspired by Benjamin Franklin, then ambassador to France, who was asked how the American Revolution fared. He answered in the best French he could muster, "Ca Ira, Ca Ira." meaning " It'll be fine, It'll be fine." It 'll go well.
The song was written by a street singer and became a popular work song in 1790. It endured past its time to became a song of revolution that could have easily been parodied at Occupy encampments.
This clip is from a 1953 film produced by Sasha Guitry, "Si Versailles M'Etait Conté" (If Versailles Told me its Story). Imagine the palace of Versailles, home to French royalty since Louis XIII , laden with gold , marble, and crystal chandeliers, its fountains, manicured gardens, with Piaf hanging from the gates, supported by a ladder, singing her heart out, the poor people of France, storming the palace gates. There are many versions of this song. In one, not only do they hang the aristocrats, they stick a shovel up their asses.
Thanks to philipchek for turning me on to this song , explaining its historical background and for help translating it.

It's nice you choosed to translate this one :) - For some people it may seems an unknowed "obscure" song although every French knows the melody and the "Ha ça ira, ça ira, ça ira, les artistocrates à la lanterne !". One thing I'd like to insist on, and we have talk about it, is that every sentence in the song refers to real historical facts and politic fights and claims, when this womem march to Versailles occured, which make this song more "clever" and historical than it may look at first sight for just a simple revolutionary song with banal people claims. And thanks to have found for once more a good "pretext" to listen to the wonderful voice of Edith Piaf :)

@@VNRose3 You'd probably get a better history lesson here : The Revolution didn't "live long," as they say. It burned out its energy on civil war against the poor of Vendee, in mindless aggression against foreign countries, in ghastly atrocities against the people of Nantes, in forcing a silly new religion (Cult of the Supreme Being) on the people and punishing atheism with execution, on mass conscription for foreign wars, and then in the elevation of one man (Napoleon) and the sentencing of millions of Frenchmen to die for his wars of personal egomania. Far from "long live" the Revolution, it was far more like "not dying soon enough the Revulsion."

"Lanterne" is a French word designating a lantern or lamp post. The word or the slogan "À la lanterne !" (in English: To the Lamp Post!) gained special meaning and status in Paris and France during the early phase of the French Revolution:

    • @brehmse
      @brehmse Před 4 lety +1

The meaning even endured and the slogan made it from Paris to other places in Europe. E.g. in the revolution of 1848 the citizens of Vienna hung up their reactionary Minister Count Latour on a Latern Post. It is said, that it was a very fun afternoon.

The EU was unable to stop the economic crisis causing havoc across Europe. The EU endorsed the bosses' offensive to make their workers pay for the crisis through increased unemployment, reduced pay and loss of employment rights.

On the bread issue, previous monarchs had understood that bread prices were often linked to unrest and had introduced price controls. Louis XVI abolished these, under the influence of laissez-fair economists.

"Ah ca ira" means in this case "Ah it will be, it will be, it will be, the aristoctates on the floor lamp, Ah it will be, it will be, it will be, the aristoctates we will hang them", not "it'll be fine".

      @emmanueln8415 Před 4 lety +3

@@VNRose3 You've got it right, Rose; "ça ira" means "it will be fine", or "all will be fine". Ludovic Frey's understanding of English appears to be rather thin. English ''it will be'' in French is "ça sera" (there is not any situation the latter can be used as such, I mean without an object). Speaking about the state of things or people, French language uses "aller"(to go) whereby English comes up with "to be". "Comment tu vas?" (literally = how are you going?) stands for English "how are you" or "how are you doing?" Also, in French you can only use "Etre" (to be) to characterize, or define, therefore an object such as an adjective or a complement must always follow. Whenever "aller" (to go) is used either with comparatives, superlatives or without anything else, it is definitely the English equivalent of "to be" in reference to the state of someone, something, or some situation. From a core Parisian, and a French language teacher at that.

Ah ! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine
The people on this day repeat over and over,
Ah ! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine
In spite of the mutineers everything shall succeed.
    Our enemies, confounded, stay petrified
    And we shall sing Alleluia
Ah ! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine
When Boileau used to speak about the clergy
Like a prophet he predicted this.
    By singing my little song
    With pleasure, people shall say,
Ah ! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine.
According to the precepts of the Gospel
Of the lawmaker everything shall be accomplished
The one who puts on airs shall be brought down
The one who is humble shall be elevated
The true catechism shall instruct us
And the awful fanaticism shall be snuffed out.
    At being obedient to Law
    Every Frenchman shall train
Ah ! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine.
Pierrette and Margot sing the guinguette
Let us rejoice, good times will come !
The French people used to keep silent,
    The aristocrat says, "Mea culpa!"
    The clergy regrets its wealth,
Through justice, the nation will have it.
    Thanks to the careful Lafayette,
    Everyone will calm down.
Ah! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine
By the torches of the august assembly,
Ah ! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine
An armed people will always take care of themselves.
    We'll know right from wrong,
The citizen will support the Good.
Ah ! It'll be fine, It'll be fine, It'll be fine
    When the aristocrat shall protest,
The good citizen will laugh in his face,
    Without troubling his soul,
And will always be the stronger.
Small ones and great ones all have the soul of a soldier,
    During war none shall betray.
With heart all good French people will fight,
If he sees something fishy he shall speak with courage.
Lafayette says "come if you will!"
Without fear for fire or flame,
    The French always shall win!

The manipulation of public opinion has long been a favoured tactic of capitalism. With the concentration of the mass media in fewer hands and ingenious research into ways of moulding popular perception, this manipulation has become much more adroit and enormously more powerful. The unscrupulous albeit sometimes subtle methods used to increase sales are now applied to the manipulation of bourgeois democracy.
