- Hey Team,
Over the past eight months, I've had over 350 calls with designers from around the world, and there are some common struggles that keep coming up: confidence, self-doubt, and the challenge of communicating value to clients. The current design education system is letting us down by not preparing designers for the real world.
In this video, I dive deep into why a one-size-fits-all approach is failing us and how we can revolutionise design education by bringing clients into the mix from the start. We're shifting the focus from aggressive sales tactics to building genuine client relationships and understanding their needs.
Join me as I share the Made By James manifesto and our big, audacious plan to create a new future for designers. Let's embrace the unpredictability of the creative world and turn it into our strength. đȘ
What You'll Learn:
- Why the current design education system is failing
- How to bring clients into the design process from the beginning
- The importance of building genuine client relationships
- Shifting the focus from sales to client experience
- How to prepare for real-world unpredictability in design

MBJ gonna be rattling some cages!
As a designer who lost his spark and is trying to find his way back on the right path I'm here for it!
same here!
Not here to rattle - just be a little different
@@christosntimasis1219 awesome
Here for the revolution! I love this so much!!!!!! You have hit the nail on the head, James. I've never been able to use scripts with clients because each client is so different and each need is so different. I think the lack of empathy and actually listening to our clients, like you said, the "client relationship" is missing.
no more one size fits all
Sounds like a hard dose of fresh air and reality. Canât wait to see more. Love it đ
I love fresh air
You are spot on my friend, glad to see that you are back on CZcams, rock on đ€
đđđ
Those initial concerns are 90% of my day every day, Iâm so excited at the prospect that Iâll be able to change that finally.
i got you mate
James thank you for this the education system is failing the young designers, it our duty as seasoned designers to share the knowledge!
Epic
This looks like its going to be really in depth. Taking me back to my first love which is design and then working with unpredictability - a.k.a Clients đ . Bring it on MBJ đ„
lets do this
Great video. I love hearing your thought process.
Appreciate you my friend.
Yaaaay... your back on YT đđ» As an 'old school' designer who's lost her spark a little with all the noise online I'm looking forward to hearing more James âș
lets do this
@@madebyjames where do you find your inspiration when youâre feeling a little âcreative emptyâ or a little burnt out?
Love that this popped into my feed - timely given i'm set to lose my job at the end of the month. I thought about going freelance and calling it "Made by Jimmy", guess it's back to the drawing board with that one đ
Definitely keen to hear more and, if you're looking for more participants, to get involved.
Great video đ
Epic sizzle
Corporate Smart is underrated, especially in individual designers. Some agencies have that, but others fall flat when it comes down to the design stage. As a corporate designer and a client, Iâm starting to see it as a benefit to celebrate instead of a negative, âboringâ skillset. Those âcoolâ designers are awesome, but I tend to lean more into imposter syndrome when thatâs all I see đ
Iâm very excited to see where you and your team take this â€
it sure is
One size, trully does fit one size!! MBJ has become like this voice of reason in this madness for the last 2 years. Also as a person who has worked in hospitality since 18 for the last 6 years, I couldn't agree more that it gives you a much better client relationship education than actuall design education does at the minute. LOVE 2:37-3:05!! Here for whats next!
Love this mate
I am no real designer but believe in the cause and agree 100% with you James. I see the same in the engineering world too. Hope one day I will be able to help your journey because you already altered, inspired mine! (Cheers from Sweden!)
awesome to hear pal, keep going!
As a complete beginner, but not overly young I can see these problems ahead of me prior to even getting my first clients.
Thanks for your openness and lack of gatekeeping, this is real worldwide community attitude đȘđŒ
I hope i can help
It's interesting how the universe works. About a week ago, I found this channel, watched some of the videos and noticed that the videos were released several years ago. It's a shame that the videos are no longer available, I thought. And now the author is back with a new video...
great timing
Liked and shared! I am so on board with this it's unreal! I've gained so much from your courses, James. Thank you for letting us into your world. đđŒ
Lets go mate
Stoked on you and the work you're doing. Can't wait to see more. I'm sure we'll cross paths again between Into the Woods and Creative South and Crop. Love ya mate!
Yer buddy
Preach! No one else as real as this online
real is real
I am excited about this! A change/reboot is needed. Great video! đđŒ
Lets go
Wooo! Let's go bud! I'm here for it.
Lets go! đ„
Brilliant and insightful. Smart thinking and forecasting. Canât wait to see the future products from this initiative. Do it!
I am on the case
Absolute madness! The only solution is revolution. I love the approach based in reality instead of content and influencers.
real is all we have
You can gain a lot of self confidence by learning to sell yourself as a designer.
The problem that i see most is that people sell themselves short and therefore lack confidence for the actual value they bring.
The education that i had involved clients and partners, so this might be different in different countries.
I am also not familiar with any "one size fits all" appraoach in art shooling? (any examples that anyone can share?) - what i heard a lot was that people felt not prepared enough for the real world when leaving art shool and i think a big part in that is helping people finding their own approach (but this is unteachable in a shool system to a degree since everybody is an individual and would need individual care)
I do agree that people need to be prepared for the real world - i would be curious in how you would teach unpredictabily in a shool format. :)
This is not a statement against your video (gave it a thumbs up!) just my perspective from a different angle.
I love your perspective
@@madebyjames alright :D
Letâs go James đ ready for this exciting adventure
Let's go, mate! đ
â€this James! I think the 3 Cs are spot on. I struggled for many years with the problems you noted (and they still pop up occasionally). Putting my focus on being âcorporateâ and âclientâ smart has made all the difference in building my business over the past 20 years. If I can help further the message in any way let me know!
thanks Amy
100% correct in so many ways James. I left a thriving design business that did over $120K in the final year because I didn't want to continue working with clients that didn't want to hear my expert advise, they just wanted a mouse monkey. I have also struggled with imposter syndrome for many years, this and constant comparison with others. I still do, for the most part, have imposter syndrome in my current job, but am really trying hard to push through.
with regards to education, the issue as well is the Universities and Colleges pushing out hundreds of new graduates every year that have been "educated" by professors and instructors that haven't designed anything in decades and teach based on outdated design concepts and ideologies.
Looking forward to seeing where you go with this. Keep up the amazing work you do, you will be the change that this industry needs.
thanks mike... have the best day and i hope the stuff i continue to put out into the world helps you
Clients are collaborators not enemies! so important to remember that
you know the truth my friend
CCC... agreed! This is hard to a junior to learn but with time this gets easier.
Totally agree mate. It can be tough at first, but it definitely gets easier with time and practice
This is a revolution I wanna be part of! Iâd love to be your Italian translator if youâd ever decide to go multiple languages! đȘđȘđȘ
thanks pal
Love it James! Buzzing that the CZcams is making a comeback!
Happy to be back! Cheers mate!
Awesome approach, I look forward to seeing how and where this goes James. Legend.
We are all here for the ride mate... lets go!
You're truly an inspiration, James!
Legend
Love it James! Always appreciate your content and commitment to teaching creatives applicable marketable skills.
I share your frustration in a number of creative business fields. It seems all anyone is teaching or selling to creatives is how to teach and sell to other creatives because that's how they actually made their money, not marketing skills to clients outside of their peers.
Seems like it's all turning into a pyramid scheme. đł
thats why i want to make a stand!
When I was listening to this video several things from hit home with me. I recently coming my degree in Multimedia Design and Development throught the middle of taking these courses. I ask my advisor if this program is update and the was made my graphic design (however I felt that there was something missing when watching video of other design to get a feel of the procss). I was given a process in creating a brief and then design the project and did it for different classes too.(not something there were brief from business that how school to give their students a feel of the design process). When creating a portfolio (which i'm still making) from the course of the program i was in but I feel they are not good enough. So I am struggle with inner demons working find project that get me notice, being 35 years along with working 12 hours factory, and finding a business is a challenge. Thank you for this video, MBJ.
Thanks for sharing mate. It sounds like youâve been through a lot, but your dedication is inspiring. Keep refining your portfolio and focus on projects that excite you. You're on the right path, and it's never too late to pursue your passion
The point about the vacuum is so important.
You know it mate
Glad to have you back in YT Jamesâ€â€â€
next week starts with two vids a week
I often feel left out of these design convos as an in-house designer. I am really looking forward to more of this kind of content
Amazing mate - it will be a learning curve for me too but i will bring more and more goodness as i evolve in this new role
I canât wait for this!!!! Iâm not sure if you have already shared this, but do you have a video on different resources and reading material you used to help you grow in your career? I noticed a few in this video that I have as well!
đ„ Hey mate, I've got loads of goodies in the captions of my videos, including links to freebies and recommended courses and books. Have a gander. I hope it helps!
James Guy, we last spoke back in 2021....Its been some days...I love seeing you with such a valuable content as always!!

the system needs a change.
Yes sir
Agree 100%.

â@@madebyjames Looking back, I kinda messed up and went to a vocational school that, well, let's just say wasn't exactly honest about job prospects after graduation. (Think 18-year-olds promised dream designer careers!) Thankfully, myself and a few friends saw through it and bounced before finishing and before they took all of our money.
Fast forward, years of working in other fields to support the fam kinda dimmed my design dreams. But thanks to you and some amazing people in my life, that spark is back! Juggling family and a career as an electrician AND reigniting this passion this last year has been quite the challenge - especially on a budget! But hey, relearning is half the fun, right?
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for everything you do. The courses, the tools, the books, the positive vibes - it all means a lot!
Viva La Revolution !
lets go
I follow you for a long time and couldnt agree more. Side question: Intro music is dope... could share ID?
Its a tune my friend timmy made for me
Do you have the manifesto as a download?
no mate
Is this a pivot like The Futur did? moving away from brand strategy and design, to making a "teaching" platform?
In any case, I am interested. I tried doing stuff before with the Futur but it never really clicked. Add my own flaws that made the situation worse (covid, depression, imposter syndrome you name it), I stagnated very badly. Would love to give this a whirl and find myself again as a designer.
The Futur do great work. MBJ will be a little different as it will be bring the clients into the conversation to learn from them. As a designer myself, with 20 years experience, i intend to focus on nurturing the existing talent designers have to help them become better communicators and help them deal with REAL world scenarios... I hope you find the content and bits we do catalyse the internal transformation you are looking for. You are not alone.
@@madebyjames already bought some of your courses. So, looking forward to giving myself a push with this platform.
Abso-freaking-lutely!!!!!
love it
A small request, if you can upload those classes on your youtube channel it will be a great help for people like me who are not able attend your class offline. đ§đ©đ§đ©
hey mate, I'm uploading 2 CZcams videos a week. Hope it helps!
Very interested to see where this goes. Its hitting home for a lot of beliefs I have had for a long time. @madebyjames please keep us posted with development of this project. All the best brother. đ
You will be first to know
