Hey James! a quick question, why don't you add a mood boarding phase in your process
Thank you so much for dropping these massive knowledge bombs. I'm excited to put these pointers into practice.
Came for the lesson; stayed for the singing.
Thank you.
Wow! Just amazing video! Thank's!!
What's your take on A.i Is it really dangerous for us as Graphic Designers?
Great info, thanks sir!
Any time!
super helpful, I think there's a misconception or miscommunication though - I feel like you're saying the same thing (at least from what I've heard of people saying "don't do free work") it usually people come to you and say they aren't going to pay you buy it will be great exposure for you and they aren't building something great for other people they just don't want to pay you for your work. I can't be sure, but I think everyone I've heard this from has agreed that if you want to do pro-bono work for someone/something that's nice, just avoid people coming to you expecting something for nothing and then referring other people who will also expect something for nothing.
I get it. There’s a big difference between choosing to do pro-bono work and being asked to work for "exposure." I've done a lot of freebies for my family, mates, and charities when they feel aligned. It’s about knowing your worth and making sure you’re in control of when and why you decide to do free work
Just completed my own rebrand, and the process and development has changed and deepened my understanding of identity design. 100% will change your professional life as a creative if you focus on your personal brand.
Congrats on the rebrand. It’s amazing how much deeper you get into identity design when you focus on your own brand
I have had a few clients like the ones you referred to. Where you work with one person who is taking orders from another. They are always the most frustrating jobs. So I definitely agree with that. I have found that asking a lot of questions is beneficial to all involved.
Totally get it. Those situations can be super frustrating. Asking loads of questions upfront is the best way to keep things clear and make sure everyone’s on the same page
@@madebyjames These are the exact reasons I started asking loads of questions to begin with lol
Don't you think that first question is better asked in the early stages before the client is committed to the project because by asking that then you might find that the problem causing the client's pain has nothing to do with branding and giving them a free honest advice that a logo shouldn't priority now. That will put you as a trustworthy person quickly and you will be on top of mind and maybe become the manager of the whole project.
Thank you!
thanks for being here
Super cool advies James! Thank you !
🔥
I was waiting for you 😅 Thank you MBJ❤
you're welcome mate
This is great advice James, and much needed. We need to make clients realise there will be more challenges and work to do. The person asking the more and better questions is controlling the conversation, and has a bigger impact on the price. That's why you need to have the decision maker as well, so they can stretch the budget if needed. Well done!
Exactly mate. Spot on-asking the right questions is key, and having the decision maker involved makes all the difference. It helps set the right expectations and can definitely impact the budget. Appreciate the support
Are you part of the LIncoln design team?
yes bossman
Hi James ❤
👋🏻
God bless James!!
Thanks for the love!
Rock on! Great video and informative. 😎🔥
Thanks for the love!
This video was so raw! And enegrtic absolutely loved it - got me out of a rut. Appreciate you mate
You got this, mate!
sir i am a beginner what should i do in my daily life for improving my design skill
Set aside time each day to build your skills, absorb the knowledge of people you admire in the industry, and keep going!
sir i love your work so much, please make a video on logo color concept
cheers mate! I'll keep it in mind
You blow me up in every video with how you deliver the information. I have been a designer for 5 years what I learned from you is equal to these 5 years with just a couple of videos thanks james
Big thanks for your kind words.
Thank you James, this is really helpful! I was wondering, how does your onboarding process looks like and how do you determine which pricing strat to propose to a client, and if there's any exit clauses (should things don't work out) you typically add to contracts?
Glad you found it helpful, mate! For onboarding, I focus on understanding the client’s needs first, then tailor the pricing based on the project’s scope and value. As for contracts, I always include an exit clause to keep things clear if it’s not working out. We have contract templates and our client process on our website themadebyjames.com/the-tools/the-client-process-from-hi-to-bye themadebyjames.com/the-tools/the-creative-contract-kit

Your support means the world!
This is really helpful. Cheers from Ukraine ) Thank you for all the work you`re doing
Glad you found it helpful. Sending good vibes from here to you
Thank you for the disclaimer at the start. It helps takes the pressure off Identity Designers feeling like they need to go all in on strategy (which they can of if they want to of course).
Glad the disclaimer hit home. It’s all about finding what works best for you-no need to feel pressured to go all in on strategy unless it feels right
@@madebyjames aaaaamen
You say square pyramid, i say 3-tier cake! Flavours optional, although mine would be coconut, blueberry and coffee. Great work James!
Love that! Coconut, blueberry, and coffee-now you’ve got me hungry! Appreciate the kind words.
Would you say the "strategy" and "plan" in this video is the same as vision and mission?
Awesome, as always!
🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for the video 🤩
you're welcome mate
you are the best thanks i cant wait for your next video
🔥🔥🔥
A plan without strategy is a map without a compass & a strategy without a plan is a vision without action-full of potential but going nowhere.
Exactly. You need both a solid plan and a clear strategy to turn potential into progress. It’s all about aligning vision with action
hey, can you cover difference between being minimal and being uncreative/lazy
Minimalism is all about purpose and clarity, mate-using just enough to make an impact. Uncreative or lazy design skips the thought behind it. Big difference
James - what do you do if a client has approved an initial creative direction but then later on in the design process requests major changes?
Great question, mate! Keeping the client in a constant feedback loop is key-no big reveals. That way, they’re involved every step of the way, and any changes are handled as we go. Plus, a solid contract helps outline that major changes may come with extra costs
Really enjoyed this one James 😃 like a chat with a friend at the desk 🙃 keep rocking it 🫶🏻
Thanks a lot mate 🔥
I came across your profile on Instagram.

Can confirm that I did just hold my nose while humming. Also thanks for all of this non-gatekeepery perfection.
Haha, love it, mate! 😆 Glad you’re enjoying the content

I recently rediscovered my passion for graphic design. I'm 25 (26 next week) and have been doing graphic design since I was 12. I got my SkillsUSA entry level certificate my junior year of high school, and was a mentor in my graphic design teacher's freshman and sophomore classes during my senior year. I had decided that I wasn't gonna major in graphics in college, as I already had the prerequisite skills and wanted to major in something else to broaden my horizons. Boy do I regret that. I slowly strayed from graphics throughout college, until recently when I quit my depressing 9-5 as a paralegal. I found your page 6 months ago and you encouraged me to start reinventing my portfolio and building my brand. Although I'm nowhere near my end goal (but who is, really?), it's been truly inspiring finding someone like yourself who shares the same philosophy and approach to graphics as I do, as well as utilizes the same clean minimalist style that I obsess over. Thank you for giving me that passion back, and I hope I'm one day fortunate enough to work for you/with you. Much love - Stefan
Thanks for sharing your journey mate. Love to hear you’ve rekindled your passion for graphic design. Life takes us on some unexpected paths, but it’s never too late to return to what you love. Keep building that portfolio and refining your style-there’s no rush to reach the end goal
This is so good James! I definitely like working in this iterative process a lot more than the big reveal. I think the big reveal process is more for making money and kicking the client out fast for the next person to come along. I work both for myself and a creative agency. The agency likes to move faster but we run into problems where management has had time to connect with the client but I have not, so the designs don't always fit in the best way. The agency format for a business is more prone to problems with clients because of all of the outsourcing $$$. Really truly the best way to work as a creative partner and designer is to custom fit the process to the client.
Totally get what you’re saying. The iterative process builds stronger client relationships and better results. The big reveal can feel rushed, especially with agency pressure to move quickly. Customising the process to fit each client leads to more satisfying work for everyone
