    Thank you for reviewing the Auto Bahn. Too many reviews that compare the R to a base or mid-level GTI. I like the GTI because the of the red stripe, the fog lights, and it's lighter in weight. I feel the GTI is better around town and sharp corners at lower speeds. It feels like it has more torque at lower speeds/rpm. I got the R because I liked the color (Lapiz Blue) and the larger wheels. I just wish mine could have come with Pretoria wheels. I like the value of the R being that it is not far from the price of an Auto Bahn. Plus the engine pulls hard on the highway which I think is the sweet spot for the R, and AWD is nice to have.

    I think it comes down to where you live. If you are in a country where it rains and snows a lot I think golf r is the way. Otherwise the GTI is probably enough. I own a golf r and live in Australia so probably don't need the R. Another way to look at it, If you're going to track the car is definitely get the GTI with the LSD and manual transmission. If not tracking then perhaps the Golf R.

      @KC-lg8qf Před 3 lety

      Honestly 4wd is not a must for winter...i have been through some incredibly bad stroms on nearly bald all season tires in fwd cars and have done fine. if it's really bad where you live a set of snow tires on a fwd car will do exceedingly well.
      I would rather save the money and add a few mods to the gti.....or happily leave it stock as it's already an amazing car.
      It all depends on what kind of car you want though....
      The GTI is lighter and more fun to drive.... It's the better driver's car of the two, and many automotive journalists will tell you that. The r is faster and more capable.... But heavier and less fun to drive. you will have a harder time approaching its limits on public roads and less fun in doing so...the all-wheel drive system in the r is also pretty passive until you get a lot of slip. This means that it just feels like a heavier GTI most of the time, until the system cuts in.
      if you plan on modding for big power of course the all wheel drive R is going to be able to handle that better, once your past stage one power (300+ hp) fwd struggles putting it down.
      If you're looking for a fun car with zero weaknesses I would just get the GTI.
      The gti also looks much better than the R in my opinion, and between the two the gti is the icon people know and love. and it performs incredibly out of the box and with a few small mods like a rear sway bar and a stage 1 tune you have a lethal road weapon that would easily keep up with a stock R or blast past it.

    • @talkbirdy2me
      @talkbirdy2me Před 3 lety +1

      **TLDR: If you can afford the R, its worth it, if you can't afford the R then you are in luck. the GTI on winters is great**. I am also in new england, winter tires are sufficient compared to awd when it comes to snow. AWD is great, and launch control is great, and torque vectoring is great and AWD with winter tires is crazy great... but winter tires and a brain is enough to handle snow. Disclaimer, I owned a stage 2+ golf R, currently drive a modded alltrack, and drove modified FWD VWs for 30 years of new england winters.

    • @kangill2411

    The gti would be my choice because it’s cheaper than the golf r. Also the gti is light weight than the golf r because the gti is fwd but the golf r is awd. Also the gti interior has red accent and red contrast stitching which the golf r interior looks basic cheap interior material. Also the gti has the golf ball shift knob which the golf r doesn’t. Also you can tune and modify the gti so it can perform like the golf r performance and easily beat the golf r awd with fwd. also I don’t really need awd because I live in nyc, I need fwd because it has better traction and hard cornering than rwd. So definitely consider a gti over a golf r.

    • @bngr_bngr
      @bngr_bngr Před 3 lety +1

    • @academiaengineering5136
      @academiaengineering5136 Před 3 lety +4

      Yes fwd has better cornering as well because they civic type r has it and the veloster n being fwd. also rwd can easily lose control if you push it too hard in the corner, when it’s raining rwd can go out of control if traction control isn’t on. also rwd suck at snow because they easily can skid also because the engine is on the front but traction is only at the back. But fwd can somehow be snow capable because the engine is on the front sitting on top of the front axle. But awd has even more better traction and better cornering as well as more performance, also they are even more better at snow like a 4x4.

      I also have a mk7 R (if my pic didn't give it away) the first thing I would do if I were you is *tune it.* I have a JB4... I would get an actual tune (not a piggy back), like a cobb access port or a good one is Unitronic tune (TCU+ECU) or something like that. Then if you are looking to just gain performance get a *downpipe, and an intercooler then stage 2 it.* This is the rout I went and the car is doing a 0-60 in 4 (I live in Colorado though, so it might be less for you) If you are satisfied with the stage 1 tune, and it is a daily driver then work on getting like a *underbelly pan, rear sway bar, end-links, spare tire* if you don't have one, and maybe even think about like folding mirror if you live in the city etc... Just go on ECS tuning and browse for upgrades to the car, and start doing whatever it is that would fit you. Hope this helps.

      Tires. People love to tune cars before bothering to buy tires but tires are the point at which power is applied to the road. If you don't have quality tires, throwing money at power is just paying for power you can't really use. Buy nice tires, feel the ride on nice tires with the current power so when you do tune it (which I highly recommend stage 1+ unitronic 93 octane and supporting mods, it's a beast and you won't need a downpipe until stage 2) you will actually appreciate and be able to apply that power to the road.
