  • Lisa Gade reviews the 2020 HP Envy x360 13z, featuring a redesign and the impressive new AMD Ryzen 4000U CPUs with Radeon graphics. Thanks to our sponsor Trend Micro Internet Security, visit them here bit.ly/3eFfwfQ , and use the code LISA20 to save $20. The Envy starts at $649. It’s s 13.3” Ultrabook with an aluminum casing, and it’s one of the smallest 13” laptops and light at 2.92 lb. / 1.32kg. It has 360 degree hinges and is a convertible laptop supporting touch and pen (pen not included). The PC has USB-A, USB-C ports and a microSD card slot. It has DDR 3200MHz dual channel RAM and an M.2 NVMe SSD. It competes with the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 and is the more affordable yet still classy alternative to the HP Spectre x360.

Just to note I have the ryzen 7 version that does not actually have smt so it's 8 cores 8 threads. I also have the 1000 nit screen option, which seems less bright than I would have thought and it doesn't support HDR. It smudges super easy and gets a little bit dim off-axis but I'm not sure if that's because the 1000 that one has a privacy filter. Other than that, I really enjoy the colors and the vibrancy of the screen and for media consumption it's pretty great.

I just recently got my self the Ryzen 5 model with AMD Graphics, full 1080 display, Bang and Olufsen Audio (whatever that means...) 1TB SSD and 32GB ram for $1,200! It also has full SD card support, lightning USB, 2 regular USB ports and a headphone jack. Kinda sucks that laptops these days don't have CD drives as I still like to burn CDs and watch movies on DVD, so I guess I'll have to buy one, and unfortunately the model I have also doesn't have an ethernet port, another thing I'll have to get at some point.
Otherwise, definitely a big upgrade from my $300 5 year old HP laptop, but I'll definitely be keeping my old laptop for the cd drive for now.

Hi, great job on the review! I am getting much different results when it comes to thermals. The unit I'm reviewing easily gets into the lower 90s when running benchmarks, and close to 100 degrees when bench marking games. I have the Ryzen 7 4700U configuration, which could account for the difference, but I'm surprised to see that our results are very different.

I have seen hundreds of tech reviews.. If not thousands, but a lot of time Lisa's video will the final one to make that crucial decision. I don't know if she is as old as she looks or as young as she looks, but I definitely know, she is god darn strong in tech. And it makes more sense to sponsor a review with an unrelated product rather than getting paid by the company / affiliate for which you are reviewing! So kudos on that too! Superb Lisa, I really appreciate the stuff you do.

I have the 2018 model of this laptop, I love it, but my issue comes into place with HP's driver support. Last HP signed display driver for my model was posted in May of 2019. Any attempts to install newer ones just causes the built in display to just show black. Other than the lack of HP driver support I do love it, and it's great for note taking.

I like almost everything about this despite the lack of HDMI. It is still the most reliable port when you need to constantly hook up your laptop to projector in client's place. Still this will likely be the one to replace my aging 7 years old laptop.
Quick question though, what's your thought on the durability of the drop jaw USB port? And if it's broken off over the years, will it still hold on to a USB cable/device? I tend to keep my stuffs for a long time.

I'm on the lookout for a new 2-in-1 ultrabook to replace my aging Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and the Envy might just be the one. Any idea for how good the palm rejection for handwritten notes is nowadays on Windows and this Envy? Or are the Surfaces still best for pen writing on Windows? The alternative is to stick with my Yoga for another year or two and rather get myself a tablet on top (for studying). Anybody?

I have to say, there was obviously a difference, but not enough for me to complain.
The envy is inferior, no doubt. But for the price difference, I will never regret having an envy.

It's perfect as a stand-alone mobile PC, but struggles occasionally with an external monitor and various USB peripherals (which I hadn't initially intended to use with the PRO). Happy with my purchase!

All well, until the hinge breaks off of the screen cover. You will find yourself just out of warranty. So, if you like to buy the Envy model any screen size then do yourself a favor by getting extended warranty. Otherwise you will end up spending 25%-50% of the purchase cost for the repair, depending on whether the broken part damaged the screen or not.
