As a Singaporean, I am always tickled (chuffed?) when non-Singaporeans are interested in my home. I, too, think of Singapore as an "accidental country". Some countries have to fight for independence. We had independence thrust unwanted upon us.
I know you don't have time to get into the details, so this is not intended as a criticism, but think of this as a Singaporean providing colour commentary.
in 1958 (?) approximately, Singapore was allowed self-government by the British, with a view to independence eventually. However, the conventional wisdom then was that SG was too small to be independent. We needed to import water from Johore. Even now. (Which is another interesting story, but another time.)
So the plan was for SG to join the Federation of Malayan states. At that time, it was just the 9 states in Peninsula Malaysia. However, the concern was that the large population of Chinese in SG would make the indigenous Malays a minority. To offset the large Chinese population, our merger with the Federation would only be viable if other heavily Malay states were included. The other candidates were Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei.
Eventually, Brunei declined to join the Federation, leaving just Sabah, Sarawak (in North Borneo, now known as East Malaysia) and Singapore to merge with the Federation and achieve independence as states in the Federation.
Our two years in the Federation were not smooth sailing. I shall refrain from blaming Malaysia, but there were racial tension, riots, and... let's call them "differences of opinions". Malaysia (Federation of) promoted a public policy of a "Malay Malaysia", with the indigenous people - the Malays - having a special status in the country.
Singapore, under Lee Kuan Yew, championed a "Malaysian Malaysia". The Malaysian PM saw this as agitation and a challenge to the political doctrine of Malay Pre-eminence (Ketuanan Melayu - also translated as "Malay Supremacy"), and Malay hardliners (a.k.a. Malay Ultras) wanted to stop Lee Kuan Yew, and punish Singapore.
Meanwhile, the Singapore leaders started to plan to exit the Federation. My understanding was that Lee Kuan Yew absolutely believed in the conventional wisdom then, that Singapore was not viable on her own. We were (and still are) a small country with no natural resources, and need to import water just to survive. How could we be independent?
But his colleagues thought otherwise. Some always felt that merger with Malaysia was untenable.
In any case a plan for Singapore to separate from the Federation was made. The Malay Ultras in the Federation govt probably thought that the best way to deal with an upstart arrogant Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore, was to kick us out of the Federation, let us realise how tough it was to survive on our own, and in a few years time come crawling back to the Federation, poor and starving and begging to be readmitted on the Federation terms.
Good plan. If it had worked.
Unfortunately (for the Federation), no one told us the plan, so we rolled up our sleeves, put our faith in our govt, and made this accidental country succeed.
    In spades.
And that explains the faith we have in the PAP.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, after mucking around with race-based politics and Ketuanan Melayu for about 60 years, the Barisan Nasional (National Front) coalition govt led by the United Malay National Organisation, was defeated in the General Election of May 2018, and the new coalition govt (or at least a faction within that coalition) is promoting "Ketuanan Rakyat" - Citizen's Supremacy (or "Pre-eminence).
Which is suspiciously like the PAP's "Malaysian Malaysia".
Oh well. Better late than never.

Singapore wasn't kicked out, is a bit of both. Singapore is economically rich due to trading and most importantly, it has the most educated people in the region during that time. While malaysia in the beginning liked singapore for its economic but the leader eventually feel threatened politically because singapore's politic is actually very popular in malaysia. Thus malaysia start to suggest policy to ban singapore's political parties from joining malaysia election if they want to stay with malaysia and with that, singapore decided to pull itself out of malaysia. In another perspective, you can consider singapore got bullied out.
If malaysia was to lead by singapore's political parties back then, it defintely would have become nation with a GDP easily rival the west.

    • @Lu5ck
      @Lu5ck Před 6 lety +2

School only teach you politically correct things, do your own research. I am from singapore. The wiki page will tell you that singapore major party did participate in the election (to test water) and even win a seat which immediately alarmed the leading party of that time. Of course there are other issues before that but this election thingy really put them on high alert afterall it proved that malaysians are slowly favoring the ideologies of equality and malaysians malaysia. This eventually force their leader do certain things that obviously is the last straw.
Look at malaysia now, the malaysians malaysia idealogy is growing, you can tell how it is a real threat to the power of the leading political party at that time.

3:39 seeing mr Lee, our late founding father cry is really sad and makes me think through how he was feeling at the time of the split. Tengku Abdul Rahman decided that Singapore has too many Chinese and kicked us out. That’s not the only reason though as the trade market had so much in common and Singapore didn’t act like a Malaysian state anyways.
In 1963, it was said that
Malaya had more Malay than Chinese
    Malaya
    Malay: more
    Chinese: less
    Singapore:
    Malay: less
    Chinese: more
    Singapore+Malaya:
    Malay: less
    Chinese: more
But because the north Borneon states of Sabah and Sarawak joined in and
    Malaya, Singapore+Sabah&Sarawak:
    Malay: more
    Chinese: less
Then Tengku decided to let Singapore join WITH the north Borneo states.

Malaysia were scared of the Communism rising in Singapore because of their Chinese majority population.
Plus, the east part of Malaysia are NOT Malays.
They're just Bumiputeran, that's why when you look at the Malaysia ethnicity demographics they use the term Bumiputera instead of Malay because that may cause some tension between two part of this Country.
Penang Island (Malaysian state) USED to be Chinese Majority and still in part with Malaysia.
Sarawak is a Christian and Dayak majority in Malaysia and still part with Malaysia till' today.

The situation got very violent where Marshall Law was Stated. Yes Correct there is a meet up between Tuanku A.Rahman and Lee Kuan Yew. That is where Tuanku decide that Singapore and Malaysia need to be seperated as Lee Kuan Yew also agreed upon.. I totally agree with you that there is alot to be said regarding this Separation.. and im San here btw and im Singaporean.. i like ur vids bro.. See ya Mate :))

Singapore is like the wife you get divorced from, but then she somehow manages to get your money and builds a super successfull business with it while you can't even pay off your debts.
Btw. It's not always the case that countries have maritime borders but just don't show or mark them. For example Lake Constance, the lake is officially part of all three countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland), but also kind of part of none. They agreed not to define a border, so there are also agreements that the boats are allowed to be everywhere in the lake, for example to save someone from drowning. (At least that's how I remember the whole thing).

How can it be labelled 'accidental' or 'against our will' when it was a conscious decision made by our founding fathers. They would have rather stayed in Malaya on mutual terms, but the unilateral imposition of terms by Malaya resulted in our founding fathers making a choice to part ways.

Yes, Singapore is born accidentally. Two thirds of Singapore population are ethnic Chinese. As part of Malaya there was racial (ethnic) problem. When northern part of Borneo (Sarawak & Sabah) were added to Malaya to make it 'Malaysia', the ethnic Malays of this country felt that they can dispense with Singapore & the ethnic Chinese dominance. This part of the world was in the throes of racial (ethnic) conflict. So they voted (booted) out Singapore of the Federation. The separation endured ethnic peace. Lee Kuan Yew the Singaporean Prime minister vowed to make his a great country succeeded.

Everything written in History isn't true (or fact). It needs to be assessed for its veracity by the reader of History. Western version is being qustioned, corrected as well as recast. Of all History I find the Singapore History cleaner a bit & free of opinionation. Next time thank Mr.Chang on my behalf for keeping up that Historical veracity. I heard a story about Lee Kuan Yew. German aerial bombing was then pulverising London. The citizens were somehow leading their lives, commuting mostly in the Tube (underground railway). He saw a bundle of newspapers of the day perched on a parapet on top of the stairwell, with a cash box next to it, unsupervised. Commuters pick up a paper each but every one dropped the exact coins in the box as payment for the paper. He was inspired by the sight & vowed to make his (Singapore) city great the same way, with the same civic sense and responsinsibility.

Regarding the whole minimum wage thing, fun fact, Norway don't have a minimum wage either (pr say).
There *are* laws however about wages that's significantly lower then the average within a sector.
(So if you are a waitress and are paid way less then others working in bars and resturants then your employer might be committing a crime, however there's no law saying that you *have* to be paid a specific amount, so if all the bars and resturants in Norway suddenly started doing really poorly and had to cut costs they *could* legally negotiate new lower wages that are significantly lower then the rest of the population, although I kind of doubt that the unions would allow them to do so, but yeah, we *do* have wage negotiations that result in reduced wages at times and we don't have a minimum wage, and it seems to be working out alright for us.

We honestly weren't accidental... we pulled out because of the discrimination we and the non-Malays in our country received, as well as some terms that we weren't getting like taxless trade. There's also the issue about Malaysia supporting the opposition communist party because they didn't like the PAP, but admittedly PAP were the ones to broke the contract by running in the Malaysian elections. Things were very tense and I don't blame Malaysia completely, but Singapore joined Malaysia for the sole purpose of attaining independence, then left of its own will (it was apparently upsetting for the PAP though Lee Kuan Yew even cried). Nothing accidental.

Secondlink or Linkedua quite ok if you ride a motorcycle but crossing by car a nightmare awaits... You have to hold your bladder...
