  • Today we look at a Northwest Territorial Mint Silver bar purchased from eBay. Plenty of red flags on this one, we show you how you can tell the bar is counterfeit / fake, and explain from the eBay listing how you can detect bad silver bars.
We test the bar in several different ways to show how it is fake. We then look at a similar eBay listing and show the key words to look for when someone may be selling fake / counterfeit silver. If it seems too good to be true, it almost always is!

I've been on it about the counterfeits and the vultures showing up with the current rush on silver. Northwest Territorial Mint seems to be a favorite target for counterfeit / fakes, with many of them showing up on eBay, sadly.

How common is it to come across these fake bars? I haven't bought anything from Ebay, it makes me nervous. It seems like alot of people get scammed on ebay. I'm sure theres some descent deals on there but I'd rather pay a premium from a reputable dealer than gamble on ebay. I'm too green for that for that right now. I'd be pretty upset if I spent money on a fake bar.

Be Aware that NW Territorial Mint was declared Bankrupt 3 - 4 years ago. I believe they're in the latter stages of liquidation as of today. I do recall that they shipped out of Nevada towards their closing. The original (I believe) main office, foundry and mint was located in Washington state. I'd look into Nevada.

You mentioned plated. Are the real Pan America Northwest Territorial Mint silver bars plated and very shiny?

Thanks. Sucks that it's out there. I test all my stuff by magnet, weight, and specific gravity. Saving up for sigma metalytics tester just for a third test on stuff I don't want to dunk in water.

Northwest Territorial Mint made me wait over 60 days to get my one oz. US coins. They had already been in trouble with the state of Washington when I made a call to them to complain. I still had to wait another two weeks to get what I paid for 2-1/2 months earlier. I notice they have moved to Nevada so I wonder if they left Washington state because of continuing legal issues. I wouldn't spend another nickel with them.

I had actually received two of these bars off of an add from Facebook. I'll never do that again, but yea I was a bit pissed off when I discovered that both of those bars were fakes. Did some pretty obvious tests on them too. I then checked everything else I have. Thankfully these two bars are the only fakes I have in my whole collection. I wonder if Northwest Territorial Mint knows about all these fakes. Yea they probably do. But yea, I was pretty mad when I found that out.

Hmm, I bought 4 from a guy. They were exactly 1 ounce. Strong magnets slid down it slowly. Took it to a dealer and Sigma machine said no go. I wonder if his machine was off.

No. You probably got copper plated with silver. Copper will slide down a magnet slide slowly just like silver. Did you check the bar dimensions against the mint's specifications with a caliper?

If you're experienced enough you can usually tell something is wrong when you first pick it up. I'm mainly talking about conductivity and heat transfer from your bodies temp to the silver piece. It happens very different with something other than silver.
