  • Malawi's Tumaini Festival is a refugee-led event that takes place in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, attracting festival-goers from both inside and outside the camp. Now in its 10th year, Tumaini - which means ‘hope’ in Swahili - attracted 50,000 people in 2023, with over 115 performers from all over Africa. Its growing popularity has helped make it the refugee camp’s largest source of commercial income.
Tumaini is run by refugees in collaboration with the surrounding host community. Organisers say it allows people seeking refuge to re-define how they see themselves, and creates an opportunity for self-sufficiency, particularly in a community that is often stripped of autonomy.
