This was quite a groundbreaking episode when it was first released, as nothing like it had been done on tv before and I remember being totally amazed at the time.
Cat is lying in Lister's spot because he's a cat and that's how they roll. Lister, having nowhere else to go, is bumped to Rimmer's bunk. It's just a small detail, but I'm happy they did it.
It's a great detail, but I can't quite decide if it was the Cat causing that scenario, or if Lister just chooses Rimmer's bunk because that's part of their dynamic.
Aww, man. This was one of the three episodes where I was in the studio audience for the recording. Very little was actually live in the studio that day. The Flintstones bit was live, and Holly recorded her bits. All the backwards stuff (and obviously the location footage) was pre-recorded and shown to us on monitors. They did make the effort to record the live bits and intersperse the recorded parts in episode order.
There's an option to watch this episode played backwards on the DVD, which is interesting to watch.

Danny John Jules (Cat) plays a vampire in one of the Blade movies.
Cat isn’t sleeping above lister. He’s just laying in rimmers bed. He’s a cat hanging out in its owners bed.

Absolutely the finest episode in the whole red dwarf universe in my view … the last scene with cat coming out of the bushes with his hair standing on end had me laughing so much I was actually a little bit sick…. Totally inspired writing and acting 👍🏴

THE STORY SO FAR...
Three million years in the future, Dave Lister, the last human being alive discovers he is pregnant after a liaison with his female self in a parallel universe. His pregnancy concludes with the successful delivery of twin boys, Jim and Bexley. However, because the twins were conceived in another universe, with different physical laws, they suffer from highly accelerated growth rates, and are both eighteen years old within three days of being born. In order to save their lives, Lister returns them to the universe of their origin, where they are reunited with their father (a woman), and are able to lead comparatively normal lives. Well, as normal as you can be if you've been born in a parallel universe and your father's a woman and your mother's a man and you're eighteen years three days after your birth.
Shortly afterwards, Kryten, the service mechanoid who had left the ship after being rescued from his own crashed vessel, the Nova 5, is found in pieces after his space bike crash lands onto an asteroid. Lister rebuilds the 'noid, but is unable to recapture his former personality.
Meanwhile, Holly, the increasingly erratic Red Dwarf computer, performs a head sex change operation on himself. He bases his new face on Hilly, a female computer with whom he'd once fallen madly in love.

On television, John-Jules is best known for his portrayal of Cat and Cat's geeky alter ego Dwayne Dibbley in the British comedy series Red Dwarf. He obtained the part of Cat by turning up half an hour late for his audition, dressed in his father's old zoot suit. He was unaware that he was late and hence did not appear at all concerned about it. The producers immediately decided he was cool enough to be "the Cat".
Bit of a random fact for u here mate. The guy who plays Kryton (Robert Llewyn) has a cameo in Bottom. The guy in the bar with the false leg that richie and Eddie try to steal.

The DVD my brother has of season 3 has a special feature where they play Backwards backwards. It's played in reverse, so they "arrive" on backwards earth and it ends with driving test.
This is where Christopher Nolan got the idea for tenant
It's hard for me to pick a favourite Red Dwarf episode but this is one of them! The fast-moving text at the beginning is basically explaining the events between series 2 and 3, including Lister's pregnancy and Holly undergoing a head sex change!😃😃

I saw this at the time and nearly peed my pants, especially at the end. It is my favourite episode, and the imagination of the writers just astounds me. How clever they are! The cat coming out of the bushes will forever be one of my favourite sights ever. 🤣
If you can find the red dwarf novels read the 3rd in the series backwards. It goes into the detail of time running backwards in much more detail and funny ways.
Just to clarify, the third book is called 'backwards', Josh doesn't mean to read it backwards, lol
The books are brilliant and have a few epic stories than didn't make it into the series.
I am trying to find some of the books but I haven't seen any online for a good price yet. If I find them I will definitely pick them up.
@@AfterWorkReactions you could always check out the audio books as well. Chris Barrie(rimmer) does some amazing impressions of the rest of the cast and sometimes you forget that it's just one man narrating it.

DJJ (Cat) is in Little Shop of Horrors. In the scene where Seymour buys the plant he's the singer on the far left. He's also in a George Michael video and Blade 2.
And Maid Marion.. Greatest kids show of all time.. Also starring Tony 'Baldrick' Robinson
The footage is actually early nineties Manchester city centre. Red dwarf was bbc Manchester. And the writers were/are Mancunian. Which is why the main protagonist being from Liverpool was an unusual choice, given the rivalry.
Just realised what Lister meant by 'When in Rome, do what the Snamor do.'
Only saw this episode a few hundred times when I was a kid and a few more times as an adult.
Got there in the end.
That is one of my favourite of all the episodes. The ending must be one of the most memorable in sitcom history. Love it. LOL
Random trivia: Apparently in some of the backwards talk they say "You spent all this time listening to this backwards, you have no life"

Ah 90s Manchester City Centre, they stayed in the Midland Hotel while filming Red Dwarf
This season is where it really started hitting it's peak - from season 3 to season 6 are classics.
My exposure to red dwarf was a VHS of this episode and the next 2, I watched it sooo many times I love these 3 episodes
There's a version of the episode on youtube that's reversed so you can understand what the backwards people are saying. It includes a hilarious easter egg too.
Definitely worth a watch
The series really takes off from now.

Always surprised when people think that... S2 was a peak for me. S3-S5 decent, though.
@@JackRascal I guess it's all personal preference. I loved S1 and S2, but for me S3 - S6 are the best. I even enjoyed S7 and S8 to a certain extent. S9 doesn't exist, and S10-12 and The Promised Land are, well, "meh".

The Kennedy assignation is well imagined.
It was a ridiculous conversation about Wilma Flintstone. It's obvious that the sexiest cartoon character was the one one that would say 'Cavey Wavey' in Captain Caveman!!!

A double in a single episode. Backwards and forwards is hilarious.
Yeah the start of season 3 is basically a soft reset allowing them to make use of a slightly bigger budget and (re)introduce Kryten. The show goes from strength to strength for the next few seasons. Marooned is next and is my pick for most underrated episode.
When everyone said how tenet was an original concept I immediately thought of this episode, let’s face the bleak reality that just about every science fiction concept has been done in some form by either red dwarf, star trek or rick and morty.
About to watch..... been waiting for you to stumble o to this one...... also the planet war one..... oh yes!

There's some nice dialogue bits in this... the rest of it is a bit "one joke", but it's memorable.
Have you watched this episode when they show it in reverse so the Dwarfers are speaking backwards while the rest of the word is going forwards?
There are a few jokes that becomes funnier when you do.
This ep probably has more continuity errors and plot holes than any piece of media ever created.
I want to ask Josh, how do you find the Scouse accent? (The one Lister uses)

Not sure if it's been noted, when the pub manager gives Kryten and Rimmer a telling off in backwards speak, what he is really saying is "You are a stupid, square-headed bald git, aren't you, eh?" I'm pointing at you, I'm pointing at you, but I'm not actually addressing you, I'm addressing the one prat in the entire country who's bothered to get hold of this recording, turn it round and actually work out the rubbish that I'm saying. What a poor, sad life he's got!"
