The Secret To Fixing Your Woodworking Finish

  • We take pride in our woodworking finishes and it's painful to see a glass cause a water ring on a beautiful project you built. There are a lot of home remedies for removing white water rings on wood tables. Some could be legit. Some…seem sketchy. I picked three of the more outlandish ways to remove water rings from a table: toothpaste, mayonnaise, and fire! Can these methods truly fix that woodworking finish that was damaged by water?
Toothpaste seems to be commonly recommended. But there’s conflicting stories online whether you should use whiting vs non-whiting toothpaste to remove water rings. People vary on how much to scrub the table. Did the toothpaste remove the water rings in my project? You’ll have to watch the video and see!
I was more hopeful to try mayonnaise to remove water rings because so many people talk about it and it’s oily, which could make sense in certain situations. I slathered my test board that serves as my table with mayo and was a bit shocked at what I saw.
The craziest method I’ve heard of is lighting your wood table on fire to remove water rings. As a woodworker, this worries me. I don’t want to ruin my beautiful wood table, but I gave it a shot. The theory is the fire burns very fast and sucks the moisture out of the finish, instantly removing the water rings. Think it worked?
Ultimately, nothing is going to be better than refinishing our woodworking project by resanding it and applying a new coat of finish. But these were still fun to try out!

Is it just me or does some sandpaper and a new coat of finish seem like a crazy idea?

If it's a POLY finish, grab something heavy (phone book), clean dry towels, and a heating pad. Place the towel over the ring, then the heating pad on medium, then the phone book. Every couple of hours switch out the towel. What happens is the head softens the POLY enough for the trapped water to escape into the towels. Works great for pizza box rings too!

Thanks for the suggestion re: using a heating pad. Tried an iron before - but a hearing pad makes sense

Just the knowledge of what causes the light water rings vs the dark rings, worth the watch.
The experiment and humor after icing on the cake! 🙂

Appreciate the video! I have young kids who always make a mess, and I decided to use an epoxy garage floor product on the oak dining table I built. It looks alright and is now totally impervious to water, kid's paint and food.

Iron set on medium and slowly rubbed over it (use cotton cloth or a paper bag as a barrier)

Hello, I love your videos, especially your cutting boards, you know about the mayonnaise if it works, I say this with experience, I have repaired many wooden furniture and floors with this technique, only I leave a good amount on the stain and let it rest minimum 12 hours. 99% of the time it works perfectly. but with wood veneer furniture it does not work very well since the finish depends a lot on the result

Wait a month and report back. Once the oils in the mayo dry, I bet the ring reappears. It's just oiling the surface (some soaks into the wood) like an oil polish like Old English Oil. It's temporary.

I'll have to test it. I think it will. But I want to see how it impacts the color of the wood.

I've done mayo on hardwood floors and hardwood paneling. It worked amazing I just buffed b it till there was no residue left. I dont recommend it though it smells horrible if left on for too long.

Toothpaste or no Toothpaste all I want to know is will you be using mouthwash or no mouthwash and will you be flossing or not flossing 🤔😳, Hmmm I'm beginning to wonder .
P.s does the timber now smell fresh and minty 😅😂🤪. Mayonnaise 🤣😂😆🤪😳 I really really really don't know what or where you've been watching or looking at but I'm beginning to think you're definitely getting your chain yanked and a lot!!! As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
P.s the mayonnaise is it full fat or the slimming world's type of thing that's supposed to be better for you 🫣🤔
