I toured from the UK to Azerbaijan via Cyprus on a Vespa 300.
This included riding on off road trails some of which I would never ride again, but my Vespa cooed brilliantly.
I suffered the scorn and derision of adventure bike riders , but I would pass them with ease when they were struggling on hairpins or when they dropped their bike.
Most of them were set up for the road and combining a bike that was too heavy and with lack of experience makes them a liability to some rather than being a help.

The main reasons adventure riders crash are poor judgment and lack of experience. Even an experienced rider such as yourself demonstrated very poor judgement with your tire choice on that terrain. Better to demonstrate the proper tires for those slippery tracks. How can we take your advice seriously if you violate your own rules?

Honestly, those reasons ADV riders crash so much, your opinions, are simplistic. Dust?, tires, terrain, weight, height, etc, are all excuses dancing around the obvious truth that most ADV riders have no idea how to ride, made evident with the plethora of crashes....and catastrophic injuries, posted on you tube. What is made clear in these videos is that many riders are chasing a dream, fell for the brochure, emptied their bank account and installed every option available, including of course crash bars, (or bone breakers if you ask me), and then in the end....crashed. Many videos like Doodie is one example, crashes all day long while taking another course usually. Riding is not for everybody, and of course off road....meaning literally not riding on a road (including dirt roads), requires athleticism, youth, strength, stamina, and extremely high hand eye coordination. Most of the new ADV rider scene barely come close to fitting this characteristic ideal. It comes down to this, if you as a rider think that a 600 lb motorcycle in mud and sand and true off road riding scenarios is even close to being realistic or practical, or safe, or fun.....there is something gone terrible wrong with your thinking process. I would guess that after falling and breaking your wrist, or leg, riding with your buddies in the dust on a 600 pounder you just purchased (to live the dream).....you would give up that dream, take the insurance money, and move on entirely to another activity entirely. Crashing often is not normal, and the ADV riders have normalized it...for some strange odd reason....probably to justify themselves carrying on....against all odds. But once you have a bad enough crash, and you are an old man or woman with brittle bones...you would conclude that it is basically a fool hardy endeavor. I will say it a again....crashing so much...is not normal. I am not gloating, but I logged 18 years on a DRZE....no crashes...and yes I ride off road....actual off road. And now I ride a T7....with no crash bars.

Long time subscriber. I'm actually glad to see you on an ADV bike. I've been looking at GS's lately. I would consider an Africa Twin but the passenger comfort and added torque of the GS has me leaning that way. We ride an FJR1300 currently. If I rode this one alone, I would likely lean toward the AT, love that exhaust note.

Yeah the GS is a sweet ride. But such a big bike for off-road use that is anything more than a fire road. Awesome for street and I love the aggressive front end it has.

@@MOTOPILOT6 I agree, the GS would be for my wife and I 2up primarily, no more than a fire trail. 90% on pavement. I'm just not ready for a Harley or a Goldwing but looking for a little more comfort. Keep up the good work man!

High center of gravity over powered massively over weight bikes, ridden by men of my age who want to get back with they’ve lost, with much less physical skills and physical strength and common sense than money.

Reducing tire pressure on a ADV bike is bad advice. These bikes are heavy and especially when loaded. You will end up with a damaged rim. t depends on the condition of the road. If you are riding FSR's that are not too rocky then you can reduce the air, but not if there are good sized rocks or riding single track.

Gravity and physics are the two main reasons people crash, through in over estimating your ability and you have a recipe for disaster.
Instead of throwing cation to the wind when you start on the dirt start on a smaller bike, then progress, chances are you won’t even go to the extreme of buying an overweight, overpowered behemoth of a bike, lighter more agile bikes become fun rather than a chore.
Many newer riders to “ adventure bikes “ get caught up in the hype and many end up either giving up or downsizing or generally just stick to the black stuff.
Learning to walk before you run can save you a lot of pain, understanding gravity, basic physics like how and when to carry momentum is vital to survival, if you get good with the clutch, throttle and brakes tyre pressure becomes less of an issue.
    Just my opinion anyway. 😀

    • @MOTOPILOT6
      @MOTOPILOT6  Před rokem

I agree. Since most ADV riders are over 40, a new rider is attracted to the GS or Triumph 1200. Not realizing how hard they are to manage on the dirt. They learn the hard way.

  • @JamesGarton

They crash 'cause they think anyone can ride a Honda. (specifically Africa Twin, never ride next to one)

For us old guys, I think the number one reason is that crash is we still think we can ride like we did when we were young and raced....LOL
