- During the 2022 Dix Mille Tours historic weekend by Peter Auto I saw again one of those mythical pieces of automotive history that I'd have never imagined to see in person some years ago. But thanks to championships like Endurance Racing Legends, these cars have begun to be resurrected again and used by their current owners.
The white Esperante GTR-1 in this video is one of the two in the hand of the French specialists @jmbclassic and during the weekend it was raced in the championship by my kind friend Olivier. Before the event, on Thursday, there was a private free practice session which the JMB guys used to check if everything was ok on the car. French racing driver Emmanuel Collard was behind the wheel for for this purpose (don't ask me why he's not wearing any gloves on his right hand because I really don't know the reason..). This seemed to me a good opportunity to get again some onboard footage of the Esperante.
The GTR-1 was built for the FIA GT Championship GT1 class, featuring a Ford-derived 6.0-litre V8 engine, developed by Panoz's Élan Power Products company, and mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox. It was able to produce 600 hp at 8,000 rpm and 678 Nm of torque.

Great car and capable driver. Its about to be christmas soon, we should collect some money for this man to buy him a right glove.
😁🖐️‼️
😆
Ah the GT1 class was full of great racecars! Thx nice video!
No worries! Thanks for watching
Love Panoz and Don's Legacy. Long live The Batmobiles.
I'd just like to say thanks for all the years of amazing quality sound from these videos. No one does it quite like you.
No problem at all! It's always a great pleasure for me to share these stuffs here. Thanks a lot for your support!
In May of 1997, I was lucky enough to watch , at Lime Rock Park, the 66 Esperante driven by Paul Newman and Doc Bundy. Paul was 72 years old and balls out leading most of the race! Can't remember who won but I won being there.
I loved "driving" this car in Sports Car GT for PC and Test Drive Le Mans for Dreamcast. That's as close as we got, now we have these great videos with professional recording. You can hear the gearbox screaming at high speed. New tech is integrated into the dashboard. Absolutely amazing, bravo.
DUDE! Sports Car GT! What a fun game that was. I was obsessed with Panoz in that game too, always thought it looked funny with such a long nose. Thanks for reminding me that was a thing 👍
Assetto Corsa mate.... Has one on there and it's amazing!
I have been a fan of V8 power forever. Nothing sounds like them. It's almost like a comfort food, no BS there. When you consider V8 designs produce 8,000-10,000 HP in drag racing form, the V8 has few comparisons.. and their sound is beyond amazing. Yes!!! 😁👍👍
“Absof@#%£-glutely”
I love how this thing just effortlessly passes every other car on the track. 😆
What a beast! Lovely sound
The Sound of this Car is absolutely sick 😍
Remember seeing these and LMP1 Roadsters at Le Mans, you could feel that sound in your chest as it went past !
I was at Silverstone when these were in the FIA GT series, you could hear these over every other car and the ground shook when they went past you, it is a shame they never seemed to get results.
Not many engines sound as brutal as the Ford SVO 6 liter!
Je l ai vu tourner au 24H du mans 1998, c était incroyable 😯
Man, by about halfway through the video he is genuinely pushing…cool to see.
Ah awesome, I had a black livery hotwheel of this car as a kid that was like my favorite thing. Awesome to see how it actually sounds!
with big V8 comes big sound!
What a beast.... epic sound
It just keeps pulling! What a beast!
Great video as always!!
Thank you!
MEGA! Thank you for this upload.
No worries!
Perfect, thank you, loving this! 😊🙏
No problem at all! Thanks for your comment
Bozzzzy! Another great one!
Thanks! Glad you liked it
Oh yeah. Memories of Road Atlanta and Sebring. Also miss the Saleen.
best sound i have ever heard
Many thanks for this wonderful video on the Panoz GTR-1, it was missing in the automotive landscape. We are lucky to see it driven by E.Collard.
I remember very well the DAMS car at Le Mans in 1997 (F.Lagorce/E.Bernard/JC.Boullion), it looks like a Batmobile and roaring with the Roush V8. Its very particular architecture still made it difficult and tiring to maintain on track over such a long race.
Even from the onboard, its pretty hard to see *where the Chicane is* xD
Long live the V8
que maravilla el on board i el sonido brutal....!
The king!
I ❤ed driving these cars for hundreds of miles through various Worldwide circuits . In GT2.
Wow...amazing race car.
Hi and thanks Bozzy love it 🆒❤️
it's awesome😍
Fantastic
Awesome!
What a beast!
Now THIS is the Esperante I remember!
This car looks really raw and visceral. Real racingcar with maximum motor on lightest body.
beastmode
Best era of sportscar's!
magic !
Midtown madness 1 , a PC racing game had this car as its final unlockable supercar. It was released back in 1999 and I don't know how but in that game the vehicle did sound like this. Still my favorite performance track car and the engine sound is so good. Sweet memories.
What a pretty car
Ford 6.0l V8 a piece of art
How was that dude allowed to drive it without the right glove on? Surely that’s against regs lol 😅
MORE ONBOARD PLEASE
GT1 Power. The greatest era of racing.
total immersion racing reale
I saw this car racing in person at the Hungaroring fia gt race, around 1995. Its awesome to see it driven by a professional ex F1 test driver, you can see its very different than a privateer driver. the car is clearly put thru its paces. just like Montoya did with the Ferrari. in person this car was very thundering and loud, the "american response" to the high revving merc, porsche and mclarenF1 of the era. they were zigzagging thru the gt2 cars just like here lol :D. paddock entry was free then, i never forget this car's front brake ducts :D
thx for the nice video :P
This car run in 98 at the Hungaroring track, you're lucky to be there ^^ , Have you take some pics from these days ?
@@alex680 thanks for the heads up I looked it up since then Yes you are right FIA killed the series 1 year later. still it feels like it was in a previous life. you know as a 20 something dude in an emerging post socialist country we were nobodies then we could not imagine The possibilities a young dude has now about photo and video. I just had a compact film camera The cheap type with the fixed lens so I did not took it. young guys usually did not use a camera at that time it just wasn't common. but what I can tell you in person this car sounded more deep and bass heavy than in the video either these are derated because of age or the microphone does not pick it up but I think it's the previous. by the way the ticket was cheap and pit and paddock entry was free. I saw Klaus Ludwig eating spaghetti. and Wendlinger strolling around but nobody bothered them The crowd was more easy-going they did not try to run down the drivers like now. this car was cordoned off but you can go very close to the front with the body work removed and the guys working in the back on something. there was a more casual vibe not like in formula 1
😍😍😍
Don Panoz is probably one of the most important figures in modern endurance racing, yet he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He singlehandedly saved Road Atlanta from abandonment and redevelopment, and used it as the headquarters for Panoz Motorsports and most importantly, the American Le Mans Series. The creation of the ALMS and the Petit Le Mans definitely saved multiclass endurance racing in North America, and due to the merger with the rival Grand Am series and adoption and modernization of the Daytona Prototype category to LMP2 standards, likely saved prototype racing as we know it today as well.
Che mezzo 😍
Son proprio mezzi così che mancano ai giorni nostri 😥
This car is technically the Panoz GTP - kind of a FrankenPanoz, if you will. It's kind of a mashup of older GTR-1 and LMP-01 under the skin, wearing bodywork similar to the GTR-1. It's been elongated by 10 cm compared to the older GTR-1s to accommodate these updates.
I remember a Sports car GT game - when I seen a first time this beast.
It was a best game. Then was a F1 game (from ISI) and GTR game.
GTR2 - tge best game.
Gran tourismo - the best racing.
かっこいい!
That's interesting the driver has his right hand glove off.
Was remenicing with Midtown Madness 2 videos and stumbled back on the Panoz Esperante and my god how could i ever forget this beast. Unique sounding being like a Roush engined Viper. What interests me is has the transmission and electronics been upgraded with a paddleshift sequential? i always used to think it was dogbox with a lever?
This is the 2003 Esperante GTP painted like a 1997 Esperante GTR-1. The GTP was built over a GTR-1 chassis but it's still a quite different car afaik
Midtown Madness 2 😎
The one and only true Batmobile.
Bonjour c'est la fameuse batmobile souvent appelé
Did he forget to bring one of his gloves?
Tossing hand.
will you get a chance to record some onboard footage of the new 992 GT3R?
Love your channel. Do you use a gimbal with that camera?
Thanks a lot for your comment! No, I always use it hand-held
@@19Bozzy92 really? Impressive. I have a hard time being steady with that camera. Used to bigger ones.
God I miss the GT1 field
Why only one gloves ? Btw awesome car 😍
Really don't know 😕
It almost seems like this is a viper chassis with an aerodynamic shell on top or am I mistaken?
Looks and sounds amazing tho!
Nope. Nothing remotely associated with a Viper here.
Gran turismo 3 vibes
What the hell am I not just seeing the guy drive with his right hand without gloves
Does it come in black?
Nice video. Any chance you have a video of the panoz lmp1 roadster?
already exist : czcams.com/video/sBOJ2L5In1w/video.html
No, I'm sorry. Still have to see that car in person yet
@@19Bozzy92 well one day 😁
@@19Bozzy92 my understanding is there's only one of those in existence that's racing
That is true. George Krass in the US is the only one with a running LMP-1 right now. There were 9 total chassis produced. Today, only 6 or 7 them exist as LMP-1s, and only George's car is in driving condition.@@Quintanaroo2117
My dude spends so much money running this car he can only afford one glove. 😂
One glove
It sounds and looks like the estranged cousin of the Corvette and Viper.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
He's got the Michael Jackson style driving 😂😅
Psst, typo in the title :)
Thanks mate 🙄🤦♂
Stupenda
Probably best sounding v8 of all time on par with mercedes c11
That poor guy could only afford one glove. We should start a GoFundMe page for him.
This is up there with the C7R for raddest engine note.
One glove?
I thought I wasn't the only one that noticed it
I think for pure time gain, more GT1 cars should be converted to paddle sequential activated gearboxes. And then ragged around tracks within an inch of their lives once again!
The paddle shifters here are part of this car's conversion to GTP specs for 2004. The gearbox and shifters came from the previous LMP-01 EVO.
Was it push rod engine or DOHC maybe even SOHC???
Pushrod. Engine is based on Ford's NASCAR engines of the day.
If anything could make this shit track bearable, it had to be this amazing machine!
12:43 I don't know much about cars... Why does that? Is driver not able that car or car is just too powerful or it is common?
It's the pit limiter, it restricts the rpm to not drive faster than 60.
Also due to te racing clutch and gearbox racing cars are often not smooth at low speeds
drive a racecar without helmet and mic, it sounds like it's falling apart and broken, becuse there is zero dampening and you hear all the mechanics very loudly.
Didn't know that the Panoz had steering wheel paddles.
Neither did I, but it makes sense since it was made by Reynard who built Indycar chassis.
This was definitely a conversion job.. just about every prototype from this era (including GT1) had floor mounted sequential
Yeah originally had a stick . Was upgraded to paddle. Some race cars you can see the stick move when you press the paddles.
The conversion to paddle shifters happened in late 2003 when this car was updated from a GTR-1 to GTP specifications and entered at Le Mans for one final time in 2004. The gearbox and paddleshifters came from the prevous LMP-01 EVO.
@@WMUCarGuy Very well explained. Thanks.
The front end is a bit ugly but it sounds glorious.
Unveiled in 1997...
Why only one Glove though...It ain't Golf....Ha!
😄 Don't really know the reason 🤔
Anzi un guanto si un guanto no
What a beast. There is no better sounding engine than a dirty V8 at full chat. Makes me sad that they're slowly killing them off in GT racing and opting for higher revving engines or V6s.
Let's see
V10s sound better
V12s sound better
@@riccardozamprogno5824 Everyone has a personal preference but V8s revving to 8-9000rpm for me are just perfect.
@@lukewalsh872 then write "in my opinion"
@@riccardozamprogno5824 Sorry Riccardo didn't realise a CZcams comment was such a big thing to you.
uno de los coches mas hermosos de norte america
The only thing that could make this car cooler is either a Judd 5.5 V10 or an 8-into-1 sequentially/radially fired header.
A Judd V10 would make this car seriously LESS cool. At a time when everyone else ran mid engine cars with either smal turbocharged, or higher revving NA engines, the giant American V8 in the Panoz is what makes it so cool. It's vastly different from everything else, but just as effective.
@@WMUCarGuy 6.0 isn't that much bigger than 5.5 and I didn't say anything about making it rear-mid engine.
@@Drunken_Hamster They may be similar in displacement, but they're vastly different in character and characterics.
I adore a Judd V10, but it's a high-revving, screaming thing, not a thunderous roar you get with the Panoz today. That incredible deep, throaty sound is one of the reasons the car is so loved.
Give it a Judd V10, and it's just another car with a Judd V10, which many had in those days.
@@WMUCarGuy The 5.5 peaks at 8k IIRC. It'd sound more like a Viper than Ryan Tuerck's Supra. Especially if you don't put an X-pipe in the exhaust like he did.
@@Drunken_Hamster Each to his own. I absolutely LOVE the sound of the Panoz. It was utter thunder, but somehow refined sounding, too. I have fond memories of seeing LMP-01 EVOs at Road America in 2002 and Mosport in 2003.
I beg you for AM Valkyrie onboard sounds, the video with Hulkenberg gaved m goosebumps it sounds so raw
I really hope to properly record the AMR Pro version in the future. Fingers crossed!
