Heaven 17: Penthouse and Pavement - Live In Sheffield 2010

- Penthouse and Pavement is the debut album by the English synthpop group Heaven 17, released in 1981.
The first single, "(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang", best demonstrates the left-wing outlook of the lyrics, criticising certain aspects of Britain at the beginning of the 1980s which was under the leadership of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The song was famously banned by Radio 1 disc jockey Mike Read (himself a Conservative and follower of Thatcher) for being overtly political. Other themes explored include nuclear war, religious extremism, American influence in the world and the rise of the Yuppie.
Heaven 17 drew on R&B and funk to create pop-friendly, danceable hooks. The album charted at No. 14 and remained in the Top 75 for 76 weeks. The album was played live in its entirety by the band in a series of concerts throughout 2010, one of which (in Sheffield) was filmed and shown on BBC Two on 16 May 2010. A documentary about the making of the album was screened the following night.
This album is featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

kudos to the bassist for remaining so faithful to the awesome original lines!
Hell yes awesome bass!!!!!
@@juliogarcia8646 Kills me that they are touring without a bass player and drummer this tour...
If only this kind of music still would exist….
Great Glenn, Ian, Martin, you gave a special blow to my youth
That bass player stole the show, especially at the very end 6:22 - 6:38
cant stop listening to this if they come back this year i have all the time IN THE WORLD FOR THEM
Michael Iveson I see them next months in Los Angeles ❤️
Wow what an excellent live version great voice and love this single and play to win brilliant band
One of the funkiest New Wave bass lines, along with Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy," of course.
TheFParisCat who’s on bass in this video?
Just looked it up... this is Julian Crampton. John Wilson was the original studio bassist.
@@mushfighter He played with Incognito & Acoustic Alchemy. Anyone good enough to play with Incognito is a MASTER of their craft! If you haven't listened to them yet, you've GOT to!
completely agree!!
That's my favorite song from kajagoogoo
We were there !!! great night !!!
AMAZING, the drummer and the bass line are AMAZING!
One of my all-time favourite albums
Heaven 17 always tight w their rhythm.❤️
I remember the first time I heard this song as a kid in '81 or '82. Didn't own a bass yet, but I was like, "WTF, that bass line is amazing!" When I finally got a bass, I ended up shedding this line for *years* -- I'm not exaggerating. Cool that the bassist in this performance gives a nod to the ultra-funky line that's overdubbed in the choruses and soloed at the end of the original track. Well done, 17ers!
Cool story, bro! Hope you're still shredding that bass line to this day!
That woman has an incredible voice
Yeah She Is Good👍
If I wasn't married already, I'd marry her.. 🤣
Billy Godfrey right?
Uhhhmm this synth intro, great. Fantastic music and groove. Always loved, very funky.
Unreal, I had this on cassette but had NO IDEA they were an actual touring act & not push button!
Bass player is a MONSTER!!
One of the absolute best tracks of the 80's!
A spliff an H17 ... memorys ... ;-)
they still be funky!
Freaking awesome!
So cool! Many souvenirs come to my mind with this song
Just perfect! Thanks for sharing!!!
Long time Human League & H17 fan...First time hearing this version. Gave me chills...
It’s amazing I can’t find one CZcams video of a bass cover for this song.
Love it x
Cannot believe this was not a hit single.
Played it to all my mates back in the day and they all loved it just didn’t purchase it😮
great memories

Clares Cabaret Wellington 82' this tracked groooved' baby!!
Fantastic
DAMN.....this sounds AMAZING!!!! Well done!!!!
I prefer Studio Stuff more most of the time but then thats usually because many bands songs just sound completely different live but if they all sounded this good live then I'd Listen to far more, they really sound great and I just So Love Synth Stuff From 80s, appreciate it far more now than back then
Billie Godfrey, is that her name ?, adds major value to this song! She's an epic backing singer! See Temptation on Children in Need. If you've not seen it, watch it, you'll love it! Its on CZcams.
fkn class..........
Hy!
My name is Cassiano, from Brazil, i'm very very fan of Heaven 17, does anyone here have the full dvd of this show and could post in full dvd with the original menus in rutracker or some other torrent? because the original is out of print already and would love to have this item. a hug to all |
Glen Gregory still got it
Amazing! Glenn Gregory sounds EXACTLY the same as he did in the '80s. IMHO they would have done better sticking to synths rather then putting guitar and bass. Others might disagree but thats OK.
the bass player does a great job imho.
The bass was always a (bass) guitar not a synth
For me, this song is (and always was) made great by the bass guitar. Keyboard bass wouldn't be nearly the same.
That bass at the end. Wow!
WHAT CLASS
Brilliant! Very cool, much more cleaner, clearer, funky...
I always loved this song. This version is so much better than the vinyl 12" version released in the 80's
took them 30 years to tidy up the song
Come to Australia! The 45 year olds would love to see h17
I prefer the original. I don't know how you can compare a 1981 production with one from 30 years later.
@@ajs41 It is his right but I agree with you the original has the groove and drive for my dance feet to produce a hernia injury
Tight, cheers !
I have this track on a 12 inch vinyl and I tell you I wish I had 2 second copy of this tremendous track seriously I can’t get enough of it AAMZING HAVEN 17 🎶🎶🙏🎚🎚🎚🎚🎚🎚🎶🎚🎚🎚🎚🙏
Wonderful, way ahead of the pack!
bought this album back at the beginning of the 80's along with all the 12"s. Have to admit that their not at all bad live, very good in fact, however sportnoticeboard youve got it all wrong. nothing is better than the original studio version. immediately gives me goosebumps, live doesn't. obviously personal perspective, but really I think its the bass playing. still each to their own.
Great vid!
Awesome!
Jammin!
What can you say awesome some performance ✌️
im a fan of heaven 17, and im 18, i dont mind them playing pent house and luxury gap now and again, but it becomes a bit repetitive, idk why they dont do how men are, or even bigger than america or before after
awesome live version... love it, but i'm confused as to why the timing of the vocals at the end of each verse is different. (the call and response part - e.g. Knowing no orders can come from above, Full time, )
great performance. I could have done without the backup singers ad-lib. She brought the vibe of the original girls voice.
That's not John Wilson.
As I understand it he walked away after a few recording sessions saying he didn’t want to be a celebrity.
Who's the female singer? She's definitely not Josie James
Billie Godfrey
That a Fender J or P
J
@@PjRjHj Thanks!!!! Love that Line..
No, Josie James!
Shit hot!!.
Version from 1981 is much better.

Time and Age can be savaging..................................................
Anyone watched the Concerts in Germany recently?
Embarrassing , Fellas you need to seriously hang up the Old Musical instruments ;(
Soz just Sayin
Well Glenn does say it's hard to play :-)
