  • Clay tests Zitay's CFexpress Type A to SSD adapter Converter CS-306 on the a7siii. The converter also works for Sony's a1, FX6, and should work on any future products that utilize the CFexpress Type A slots. We put recording options to the test as well as read and write speeds compared to our 80gb Type A card.

The bottleneck would be the adapter, and most likely the firmware could be a factor as how the Camera could perceive the card, even though the SSD is super fast. This would be a great solution if you happen to have many m.2 samsung evo unused. But great review in tackling this alternative solution.

I just read that CFExpress type A is only 1 PCIe lane of bandwidth, while the type b is 2 lanes. (Most full-size NVMe SSDs are 4 lanes), That, coupled with the lower power requirement than a full-sized (power hungry) NVMe SSD like the Samsung, could explain why it doesn't do the higher speeds. Maybe an SSD with only 2 lanes (I don't think they make 1 lane SSDs) and 30mm or42mm length (smaller power draw) would make them work, since the camera is only designed for the tiny card. I'd love to see you try one out. I will also email Zitay and see what they say.

I saw another youtuber do a similar test and turns out POWER is the issue. Apparently the camera can't deliver enough power to the full length 2280 m.2 drive. He used a smaller, more power efficient m.2 ssd - KIOXIA bg4 - which is a client ssd, and it seemed to work fine. Maybe that is something to try, like a sabrent SB-1342-1TB or a 30mm SanDisk PC SN520 512GB m.2 2230.

I’m getting my Alpha 1 soon and have seen reports about flushing at maximum speed of the (sd-)card, even though the best ones (V90) are only rated for 90MB/s continuous. My guess is that for CFx also the maximum speed is used, so possibly 700MB/s.

Technical point. Your exposure is a bit hot. At least a stop or two too bright. Your skin on your forehead and nose is blown out. Also, on the camera angle next to your computer your DOF is too shallow. Focus is on your glasses and eyes are out of focus. Try a litte less blurry to make it so both your eyes are in focus. That is more pleasing to watch. Now it almosts looks like everything is out of focus as its too narrow. Otherwise I love your videos! Keep up the good work!

@@DPCTechnology In the meantime, I've done some Sony A1 research and for the 8K content, it technically shouldn't be that demanding and should hopefully be do'able. It's a h.265 codec at either 200Mbps or 400Mbps, so it needs a sustained write of 25 MBps / 50MBps which ... should be viable on a fairly priced performant SD card.
I also noticed that in the comments above that someone mentioned the KIOXIA bg4 - I found this video and they raised some very good points but, they were talking about a different interface (the cfast 2.0), however, it may be that these lower powered NVMe's register themselves differently and therefore open options up.
Depending on how testing goes, it may be worthwhile investing in a KIOXIA bg4 to see if you get more usage. In the UK, 256GB ones are on ebay for about £30 so it could be worth a shot.
Apart from your video, there's hardly anything on this topic and a solution to the higher rate captures (which in the case of the Sony, might actually be the 4K raw vs the 8K (owing to the codec)), will be super useful.
