There's a really good American drink, similar to an English Country Garden, called a "Mint Julep" that can be made with:
Simple syrup (you can pick this up at a local Target, along with...)
Lemon San Pellegrino (also called S.Pellegrino)
And some mint leaves from a Save-Mart.
Using a (preferably metal) cup, and a tenderizer-like crusher, crush ~8 mint leaves until bruised, not damaged, but just enough to release the mint oils without releasing the bitter elements of the plant itself. Then, pour .5 shot of simple syrup onto the leaves. Fill the cup with crushed ice, then add 2.5 shots of S.Pellegrino. Stir until the outside of the cup is frosted, garnish with a small stick of mint if you're feeling fancy, then enjoy this adaptation of a classic Kentucky cocktail. If you want it alcoholic, substitute S.Pellegrino for bourbon or whisky. I've been told that it's good with a shot of grenadine, too.

Barring a G&T I wouldn't regard these as common British drinks (though I'm sure they're delicious).
Here's a suggestion for a list of traditional British cocktails (along with a couple of modern classics):
    Tom Collins
    Planters Punch
    Singapore Sling
    Pink Gin
    Whisky Mac
    Grog
    Bucks' Fizz
    Black Velvet
    Pimms
    Espresso Martini
There's also hot cocktails such as hot toddies, mulled wine (or a smoking bishop!), wassail (mulled cider) and so on.

I used to drink in a small local pub where a bloke used to drink what he called a `brown robin` this was a shot of every optic ( there was a lot less of them then) so i suppose gin, vodka ,whisky ,brandy ,rum then topped up with best bitter.

Still waiting for a contrast between Brit and American automotive terms and driving regs. BTW, can someone tell me what MOT stands for? It sounds like what we call a safety inspection here in the states, but perhaps a bit more stringent. My state no longer even requires a safety inspection to get one's tags renewed. Taking care of it lonline also ends the days of "take a number and wait your turn" at the revenue office

usafvet100 MOT's are safety tests that, after they reach 3 years old, every car in the UK must pass yearly in order to be roadworthy. Cars can fail on things like bald tyres and bust headlights, they also need to pass an emissions test. Driving without a valid MOT gets you up to a £1000 fine - it also invalidates insurance so you could be in for another fine and penalty points on your license.
It's all a bit of a ballache but it does stop the idiots driving cars that are completely unroadworthy!

+Love00Mother00Earth Many thanks, I thought it was something like that. I like the "Wheeler Dealer" programme in which Brits Mike Brewer and Edd China buy mingy classic cars, fix them up, and sell them on. Mike sometimes crosses to our side of the pond in search of Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, Chargers, and the like which can fetch a high price in the UK, enough to make a tidy profit despite the shipping and repair costs. Anyroad, passing the MOT is sometimes an issue to make the vehicle street legal in the UK. As I mentioned, a safety inspection used to be a yearly requirement before you could renew your registration and license plate stickers, but for some reason my home state has discontinued the practice a few years ago. Even so, the cops can still pull you over and ticket you for dead lights or cracked/missing lenses, a cracked windshield, malfunctioning or missing wipers, smoky exhaust, or any other obvious safety violations. Rust-eaten old jalopies are called "cop magnets" since they're very likely to attract attention and get pulled over.

Isabella Endacott Virgin strawberry margaritas aren't bad, either. I very rarely indulge, but when I have the odd cocktail it's usually either a margarita or tequila sunrise. Whilst attending a teacher's conference in Little Rock this summer, the hotel offered free happy hour cocktails, the tequila sunrise I had was the first cocktail I've had in perhaps 10 years.
