Using Your iPad as a Sound Module - czcams.com/video/pv7OWZAGbs4/video.html
I have all the correct components plugged in but I keep getting feedback/echoing/hum/buzzing when keyboard has midi connected. Any idea how to stop that?
@Samuel Cobb you may need a powered usb hub, just depends on what devices you're using.
@@sthetraveler1748 I highly recommend going straight from your iOS device -> USB camera connection kit w/ charging part -> Powered USB Hub -> to the rest of your setup
This should help with any hum or noise interference along with adding flexibility to your current setup.
This is by FAR the most helpful video on CZcams regarding this topic
Thank you sir, much love

I use the Bluetooth Korg Nanokey studio. 25 keys, 8 pads, 8 knobs and a touchpad. Nice being portable with wireless. Works great with the iPad and Korg Gadget.
Nice!
i just got the Korg Microkey 25 usb (not air version) and cant get it to do anything. any suggestions anybody ?
@@Jordie0001 not familiar with that, but you may need a powered hub to use it with iOS, if it is compatible with iOS at all. If it requires a driver then it may not work. It has to be class compliant.
@@SoundsAndGear : You must not be familiar with the KORG Microkey 25 usb . there are lots of youtube vids promoting how easy it is to get it up and running it does not need a powered hub (according to the promoters). when you talk class compliant you are talking greek technospeak to a newbie like me. i still dont know the name of the software.
No, I’m not familiar with it because I haven’t used it. Class compliant means it doesn’t need any extra setup, it just works. The software in this video is Korg Module but it has nothing to do with connecting a keyboard. You can use any app once your keyboard is connected. Did it come with any instructions?
Nice channel.
Thanks!

This was a good follow up video. A lot has changed in iOS. My first question is have you connected the Yamaha Montage to the iPad yet? My second question is have you connected your iPad to your Mac to serve as an audio and midi device.
Thanks bro! I connected Montage to iPad last year sir lol, you already know hahaha. It's super dope! I haven't connected to Mac yet, I mainly record audio from it into whatever I'm using, you know I'm not a big MIDI guy lol.
SoundsAndGear I keep forgetting that lol, I think I’m probably the only one out here still using midi smh, oh well. Did native instruments ever release a firmware to make their controllers compatible with iMaschine? Oh btw all your iMPC Pro 2 projects can be exported and imported to the MPC desktop software.
@@ThirdLadderEnt Ahahaha, you not the only one, I just am an audio guy! No controllers work with iMaschine, that joint won't even open on my iPad at the moment. And you know I already exported from iMPC Pro to the X lol, that's why it's one of the apps that gets used hahaha. They could improve it a bit (name the export after the project) but I dig it.
Hey how’s it going my name is larry and I just wanted to give another comment on a subject that you discussed about connecting the akai keyboard to the iPad I had a lot of trouble doing it so I tried one thing hooking up my old Novation keyboard and you know what it worked just one chord but thanks with your help I found a way to jam in my iPad peace....
Cool, glad you got it going!
Great video. Irig i/o can be used as controller and interface at same time, but Its posible to use with a second keyboard with usb hub? how to select which one is the audio unit and which is the controller in the irig?
Not sure what you mean, haven't tried it with a hub but I'd imagine in whatever software you're using you just select the device you want to use.
Can you also make a video on how to use all the mobs on irig keys 2? Thanks
I don't have any plans to do so.
A very cool and informative video thank you 🙏 I have a tascam model 12 which only has a midi clock out what would I need for pressing record/play on tascam and it to start sequencer in Cubasis on my ipad, ie out on the tascam ...in on the iPad hope this not to confusing 🤪thanks
Paul.
Thanks for watching! I would imagine a MIDI interface would work, you'd have to check Cubasis to see what it responds to for sync.
Thank you I’m trynna run my k board to ape matrix!!!
Cool, glad to help, thanks for watching!
SoundsAndGear I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear, it’s not appearing, I am in the us and the k board editor app is not available on the Us App Store I’ve looked for help and you’re my only hope!!
@@IgnisCygnus147 I'm not familiar with that app, not sure, sorry.
Thank You very much for sharing this well explained information. I was wondering once i have connected Midi Keyboard using the USB camera adapter to I-pad or I-phone,now from that, how would i be connecting so i can use with Garage band on Macbook pro OS X EL Captain 10.11 ? (frankly out of date but i love" the no where to be find 17" screen )?
Audio output into the audio input of your computer.
This is a great video! Thanks for posting and explaining everything so clearly. If I want to have power connected to the iPad, can I run my controller MIDI out into the iRig MIDI 2 and then plug that into an Apple Lightning to USB3 camera adapter?
Thanks for watching! Yes, you can use it via USB with the adapter kit that has a power port, that is how I generally use my interfaces with the iPad as well.
@@SoundsAndGear Thanks for the reply. I think that's what I need to do...run from my MIDI controller to the iRig2 and then into the Apple camera dongle. Thanks again.

Great videos, subscribed!
I'm loving the IK Multimedia stuff and it looks like you use a lot of their stuff and also the Roland Module app(s), which I also use. Question though: Have you had any experience hooking up more than one MIDI controller to the iPad and doing some kind of MIDI Merge while still keeping the iPad charged? I have the iRig Key I/O and an guitar pedal that can send MIDI PC and I'd like to switch between MIDI programs from the foot pedal and still use the iRig Keys to make the sound.
Thanks for watching!
hello! your videos are super helpful. Thanks for posting them. Quick question... Do you have a video on ipad-garageband settings that need to be set-up before i connect my midi keyboard to my ipad. I have an old Ipad 2 that is not being used. I am hoping i can still use it.. ~ much appreciate your response and help
~ kash
Nothing specific on Garageband, not sure if the current version will run on the ipad 2 due to the OS it has. You can try it though. If so, as long as you have a method of connecting your keyboard it should work.
Which set up would you recommend if I was trying to have a midi keyboard, a line 6 Helix, and an electronic drum kit all in the same iPad?
Hmmm, I'm not familiar with the Helix, but finding something that has multiple MIDI inputs I think? Or maybe a dedicated audio interface that handles audio and MIDI as needed?
Great concept but how does the tablet battery stay charge
Depends on what type of device you connect, some will pass through power to the iPad.
Hi, you have made a really cool introduction for these mini midi controllers. I'm going to buy the Akai mini mk3 for my grandson. Which App were you using for this ? And which app would you recommend ( for a kid of 8 )
I used more than one app, there are lots and it depends on what you want to do with the app. Garage band is free I believe and has sounds in it, but again, depends on his age and what you want to do.
Great video! What cable is needed to connect the Arturia MiniLab (USB output) to the iRig Pro Duo (micro midi hold) midi input ?
You would not connect these two, the MiniLab does not have MIDI output as far as I can remember.
Excellent performance and an excellent instrument as well as Gbnd. I use Gbnd iOS in conjunction with Yamaha Genos, PSRX-SX600 and other. I use internal midi in Gbnd. However, How would I set hardware midi setting from hardware keyboards to operate? I expect it’s the same principle used on you hardware keyboard.
Thanks for watching. I don’t know your keyboards but MIDI should Ashraf be working if you connect them properly to the iPad.
@@SoundsAndGear I’ve got Yamaha Genos and PSRSX-600 are each STUNNING instruments.
@@bestrickie2 Nice!!
great video very informative, how to hook up to an Android tablet or phone?
Sorry I don't use Android, probably would need to use usb though.
What if I want to do this the other way around? It would be cool to use iMPC to trigger and sequence samples from an S950. That possible?
As long as you have a MIDI output device and the app can send MIDI out you should be fine.
Nice video. Thanks! Is that Arturia a full key or mini-key controller?
mini
for garageband which is the best keyboard..
Whichever one has the features you want
This is good but how do you get MixPad to receive the music from the keyboard?
I don't know what MixPad is.
Thanks for the video! I just had a question... I want to buy a normal keyboard and use it as a midi keyboard so I could connect it to my iPad in garage band. So I was wondering if the irig midi 2 was the only connecting wire I would need to connect the keyboard to my iPad or if I needed to buy another connecting wire?
If your keyboard has MIDI output, it should work with the iIRIG MIDI device.
SoundsAndGear Thank you for your reply! So I cannot use a normal keyboard as a midi keyboard?
@@mehakdrums I don't know what you mean by "normal keyboard". If you mean a keyboard that has sounds it and it's just a MIDI device, then yes you can use it, as long as it has a MIDI output options, or a USB MIDI option.
SoundsAndGear Ok. Thank you!

Great video - I have a 5-year-old at home that I wanted to expose him to musical instruments. He started piano lessons this year but due to COVID-19 - we had to stop his lessons. With how fast technology is changing, learning how to play, edit, and manipulate sounds on midi keyboards opens a lot of possible learning opportunities. (I'm not a musician & I don't know how to play any instruments) - my question is if he started to learn on the small midi keyboard, could those principles be transferred onto playing on a traditional piano? Thanks in advance with any feedback -- Stay safe.
Cool! Yes, the notes will be the same on larger keys/piano, the keys may be larger and the weight of the keys may be different but the notes will translate properly. There will just be more of them.
I have to respectfully disagree. If the goal is to learn piano, I strongly suggest using a "fully weighted" or "hammer action" keyboard. I'm reasonably sure his piano teacher would agree. These keyboards will teach the same skills, hand and finger muscles needed for used on a real piano. Ideally the keyboard should be 88 keys, but 61 will work if $$ is an issue.
Kids who learn on the light mechanism of the "synth action" or "semi-weighted" keys of many midi keyboards have a much more difficult time transferring to a piano. Playing these kinds of keyboard teaches the learner too many bad habits. Try to have it set up at the same height as a piano keyboard (~28.5 inches) and use a ~19 inch high stool or chair (for a five year old a taller chair might be needed). All these help in learning proper muscle memory and accustoming the body to real pianos.
I'm a classically trained musician and use an expensive Kawai stage piano connected to an iPad that keeps me in practice for using a real piano. While you don't need to pay for a top of the line stage piano, if you spend a little more now, it will be an instrument your child will be able to continue on while growing up. Look for the better Casio, Yamaha, Roland, Kawai, Akai or Novation keyboards offering "fully weighted," "hammer action," or "graded hammer action" keys. Nearly all electronic keyboards these days are equipped with MIDI, which allows connection to an iPad as SoundsAndGear suggests, though many will come with piano sounds built in. However their are many piano teaching programs for iPad. His teacher can probably help with this.
@@DavidHHermanson The principles will translate, the weight and actual feel of the keys will obviously be different as mentioned. Consider the question being asked, and why. Not everyone wants to go out and purchase a hammer action keyboard right now.
@@SoundsAndGear Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate your excellent channel here, and the work you put into it. I think I did consider the question. Before COVID they were taking their child to lessons. I tried to suggest that a greater investment is worth the money if the goal is to learn the piano. I no longer teach, but when I did (at a children's music program of a small conservatory) everyone teaching piano gave this same advice. It's very difficult to teach fingering drills on a 25 key MIDI board, and synth style actions lead kids into really bad habits. Young piano students --age 5 to 9-- are great. They're at a developmental stage that allows very rapid acquisition of muscle memory and very quick learning. That's the time for parents to make the investment (and the commitment to lessons). If money's a problem, buying a demo or used keyboard from a reputable store or online is the way to save. For exanple, I've seen low-end fully weighted Yamaha Piaggero's and Casio Privia's sell for under $200 used or open box on Reverb, Sam Ash or B&H,
Regardless of this , thanks again for the great job you do here on YT. The lessons and advice you give in your videos is consistently first rate.
@@DavidHHermanson I get it, that's why I mentioned less keys/weight. However, I try to answer people's questions as asked because there is usually a reason they are asking about specific things. A small MIDI keyboard is better than nothing at all imo. And though not the same, certain things can still translate even if it's just being familiar with where the notes are. Thanks.
Wish the iRig duo was type c
Surpised they haven't updated it. Have you checked? It may come with a usb c now?
@@SoundsAndGear I went and bought an adapter for it today

Great video! When you plug-in a powered iRig Pro DUO (at 9'30" in the video) the iPad does or does not receive charge? Thank you in advance!

thanks for very informative video. However, how can I get direct speaker output from Midi controller keyboard, not through iphone? I am using iphone 14 Pro with Roland Juno DS as midi controller connected through USB lightning adapter, in Garage Band.
You can't get audio out unless the keyboard is acting as a sound card. If it only passes MIDI you're going to need to route your audio another way.
Will this same concept work for a USB powered microphone?
I'm not sure
Sir, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge :) Great help!
Since i am new to all of this, may I please ask you a question?
I would like to connect my iPhone 11 to an old keyboard and I would like to listening via a headphone.
How do I go about? Thank you kindly! Groetjes from Amsterdam
Thanks for watching. So, with iphone 11, there isn't a headphone jack obviously, you'd have to use bluetooth headphones to hear what you're playing. To connect your keyboard you'd need to have the proper cables, which depends on how your keyboard works. You may need a MIDI interface, you may need an audio interface, or one that does both. If you connected an audio interface you could connect your headphones to that.
@@SoundsAndGear Thanks a lot for your quick reply! It is very good information. I can really do something with it! :) Thanks so much! Kind regards!

I have a similar question and not sure if this was fully resolved. I have Alesis vortex wireless and I can connect the dongle through apple lightening cable to generate sound on the I phone xsmax. Issue now is how to amplify the sound since there is no 3.5mm port. The charging part of the lightening cable won’t recognise a 3.5mm auxiliary cable as well, since I guess, it is for charging only. Please help.
does the irig pro duo or midi 2 charge the ipad? if is not how can do it? because we are using the lighting port. Thanks for the answer awesome stuff
It does if you use a power with it
Hey so if I'm using the usb lightning adapter on a newer iPhone, (the ones that do not have an audio jack) what ends up being my audio output? And how could I get it to an external device?
You'd need to hook up an audio interface via USB.
Is there a usb merge connector so I can use my two Nords to play apps on I pad. For live use
You could try using a usb hub.
hey , let's say I connected my instrument to the Ipad with the adapter like you did, can I also plug it to an interface to get sound there? if yes how
Run the audio out of the iPad into your interface.
Can I connect an M-Audio Keystation 63 es to my ipad air 3 with the connectors you mentioned?
Depends on if you have the right connections, I haven't used that keyboard, if it is class compliant then yes.
Hi! Great video, do you think it is possible to connect my keyboard with my /ligthning to usb - male / female to female usb adapter/ and then the usb cable from my keyboard into the usb adapter?
Thanks for watching. That's something you would have to try, some adapters work better than others when combining them.

Confused regarding the HUB. As I see u did not power the Hub then how did ipad detect the midi controller?
I explained it in the video, the hub draws more power due to it's design.
So..i don’t know much about this. I have an axiom pro 61 that I want to hook up to my iPhone/iPad. Is that “class compliant/ no drivers needed)? And also would I be able to get by with just the camera/lightning adaptor, or will I likely need that unpowered 3 port usb hub as well? I’m a beginner and this would be for casual play. Thanks!
Haven't used that one so I'm not sure, you'd have to check on their website.
What if I don’t have the usb hub? Does using the Akai mpk mini 2 work if I use the extra lightning port to power the dongle?
I haven't tried it
Hi. Great Video. I just am not sure how to connect more that one iPad/iPhone and external Keyboard. So that I can play apps on either iOS device. AND play one iOs with the other. I don't get this MIDI in/out thing. Do you have an idea?
You'd connect one keyboard to one device and another keyboard to the other device, like hooking up two computers, or two sound modules.
@@SoundsAndGear thanks. But I want to use on (oder iPad) as MIDI generator with midi apps inside aum. This does not take up so much processing. And then I want to use that MIDI data in my other iPad running the synths. I tried this with my twom iPads over a powered USB hub. and it does not work. The keyboard hooked up to the hub shows only on the iPad connected to the main (square) USB port. It cannot be used on the other one. I have no clue?
@@markus_knoedel You'd need to setup routing from one iPad to the other, based on whatever app you're using. So you'd need MIDI into the old iPad, and another form of MIDI going out to the new iPad. Either network MIDI or a dedicated MIDI device.
Hey! Just double checking for the Akai mpk3 mini, as we can use the USB hub trick instead of a charger, do we have to use a lightening to USB3 camera cable or can we use the normal lightening to USB camera cable as we don’t need the charging port? And was your hub powered? Because everyone is saying you need to have a powered hub but I think yours isn’t but it still works..
Also, is there a port in the Mpk3 for a cable that I can connect to an amplifier? Or will I have to connect a wire to my iPad? Like an 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch wire?
haven't tried the mk3 so I can't say, but the hub I got "tricks" the ipad into sending more power so I don't need a powered hub
