- Many of the seven letters from Christ mention local events that those who lived in that city and attended that fellowship would understand. Here in Sardis, the “watchfulness” allusion rings in their minds.
They all knew that twice their city fell to the invading armies of enemies because the soldiers who guarded them had slept on the job.
Sardis was built upon a thousand-foot-high cliff overlooking a fertile valley. This mountaintop location provided such an apparently unscalable wall of protection in the natural rock formations that it seemed impregnable to any attack other than through the heavily fortified entrance gates.
Yet Sardis was captured twice before this letter from Jesus arrived, and all the inhabitants knew why. Both Cyrus the Persian (in 549 BC) and Antiochus the Greek (in 218 BC) could take the city almost without a fight, both times because of its slackness.
Each time Sardis fell, enemy troops watched the guards on the cliff top, saw the hidden paths they used to get down to the valley, and used those same paths to creep up at night and take the city. In each conquest, when the troops scaled the precipice by night, they found that the overconfident inhabitants of Sardis had either set no guard or were sleeping in the guardhouse.
Sleeping on the job was a physical sign of overconfidence for any soldier tasked with guard duty.
Sleeping spiritually, by not guarding against the wiles of the Devil, is a sign of overconfidence for any believer. Jesus was warning them:

There was a clear parallel that the believers in Sardis would have caught and that all of us in the following generations of Christ’s church should heed. Thus, we have the key that unlocks the meaning of Christ's words for Sardis.
Jesus points directly at their need for watchfulness and ours. Jesus often used this metaphor of watching, staying awake, and sleeping in His teaching. He used it in several parables, contrasting the good and bad servants. Here are some of Christ’s key lessons in the Gospels:

Not sure if folks are aware but the passgae in matthew 24 that speaks of 1 taken and 1 left in a few different scenarios, is not the rapture we are waiting for. If you read on they are taken where the vultures gather. I never realized this until recently. Our blessed hope and rapture is depicted in thessalonians.

@@ama72346 Acts 15 you may notice that the gentiles were not saddled with the law of Torah but were recommended to not take blood , eat strangled or idol foods, and not a peep about the sabbath. You also find the sabbath is the seventh day Saturday not sunday and that has not changed , Believers in Christ are not subject to a day , they are not subject to the sabbath . Believers in Christ rest from their works and enter the sabbath rest of God. The scriptures point out a mark on hand and forehead not a day . .
We have the Sabbath and we have the Lord's day saturday and sunday . however we as believers are not under the torah law we are new creation in Christ and whilst the law is still here we are not going to be judged by the law.

If we could earn heaven by our own efforts, then Christ died in vain. He wouldn’t have had to suffer on the cross for you. You are and will always be His child. Speaking of non-scriptural messages... I've heard from several people who have had NDEs and started spreading non-scriptural messages of who will be in heaven. I think this is a mass deception. Beware of experiences which go counter to the Word!

@jeffc5474 no such thing as law without grace, just shows the incompetence of your knowledge. Grace was given to those in the old testament as well, if not, they would be eternally lost. Grace is for all sinners, but according to you, they must have been sinless in the Old testament, because they didn't need Grace. What rubbish nonsense in your thinking. Oh my. Does anyone read their Bible or just listen to people like this and believe what he says? Folks, read Matthew 15:24. Why? Because Jesus said He was sent "but unto", meaning only, to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Read Jeremiah 31:31. The new covenant wasnt promised to Gentiles, non Jews. It was only promised to Jews. Jesus earthly ministry was to Israel. Israel had to confess their sins under the Law and the old covenant. Jesus, after He was crucified and sent Stephan, sent Paul to Gentiles after Israel stoned Stephan to death. In todays dispensation there is no confessing sins and grobbling to God begging for forgiveness. We believe Christ died for our sins, that He was buried, and that He raised again for our justification. The apostle Paul tells you that you cant be saved by your works. Its by faith alone. Now you have a choice. Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 for yourself and be safed by placing your faith in Christ and His finished work, or stay unsaved by believing pastors like this and keep being misled. If Jesus only came for Israel, then we Gentiles have no hope. Thankfully according to the Bible you are wrong
The Gentiles have a conscious to know right from wrong, and like the Jews, they perish without the law and are judged by the law. Both Jews and Gentiles are under the law whether they were given the law or not. Christ came for sinners who broke the law, and that includes both Jew and Gentiles.
Im not saying this pastor is right, because to me it sounds like he enjoys putting his hands in peoples pockets and getting people to listen to his nonsense, but you lose a lot of people with that doctrine.
