The thing I like about trappers, is that their shape, in my opinion just makes it so easy to carry, plus it has two blades in stead of one. I know a few guys that religiously only carry trappers. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder :)

The spey blade on a trapper is for skinning, not castrating. Professional trappers would go out of business if they went around castrating their prey. It was not designed to be a box cutter, or other
EDC NONSENSE. It is a fine knife in the field [hunting/fishing]. The modern flippers, etc, are about worthless for fishing/hunting/skinning purposes. Another trapper option is the Slimline---single blade, sleek, elegant & light weight.

I totally agree with you Mark. I have bought trappers in the past from Case and carried on the farm. They are big and heavy to carry and I found the stockman pattern more useful in the daily tasks for everything I did on the farm. I actually owned at one time a large stockman red bone Case that had "for flesh only" stamped on the smaller spey blade of the stockman. Wish I would have kept that knife and stored instead of using all of those years ago. Just was never a fan of the trapper pattern. I know a lot of collectors do. Now I carry a Victorinox #1 because I love the steel and it covers my daily needs. The size fits my hand and is light to carry. In every job I have had over the years my tasks and requirements have changed. So have my EDC's Jeff

The spey blade is perfect for castration. The scrotum is not sliced off, it is split just enough to be able to slip the testicles out, the vas is scraped back away from the testicle and then the vas is separated where it is scraped. The best use of the spey blade comes later, when the removed testicle sack is split just enough to remove the testicle which from calves is seasoned sometimes breaded and deep fried whole. From bulls, the testicle is usually sliced, breaded, seasoned and deep fried. Rocky mountain oysters! That spey blade is the best, the the oysters are great!

Tobias made (somewhere) this remark: the trapper is a moose on a jack knife. Trappers need one tipless blade in order to scrape the fat from the skin of small game. the other one is, as in the moose, a narrow and pointy california clip point for skinning and dressing. Anyway, I find it useful for carving, when there is something hard to reach without the risk of make an unwanted cut with the tip, in case of the speyblade. The clip point works like a drill and is capable of round cuts in short spaces. So much on the defense of the trapper... I got just two against five stockmans, and I am not a collector...

The best knife to bring to a restaurant is the new Victorinox Folding Serrated Paring Knife (like a folding version of their “tomato knife”). It’s only 1.5 ounces, but has a blade well over 4 inches. The blunt tip makes it non-intimidating (and also nice for harvesting in the garden). Victorinox says you can put it in the dishwasher. It has a liner lock, which is nice but potentially hard to use for someone with less hand strength.

I think the spey is the most pointless blade shape, at least if you're not cutting animal parts,. And I'm not. I'd rather have a long sheepsfoot or coping blade. But I have to admit that I use it more than the clip. It feels strong and the straight edge seems good for cutting food. And I like having the longest possible blades for the handle size, vs stockmen or other double-end patterns. I'd just rather have the useful point of a sheepsfoot for cutting into flat surfaces. So I guess I like the trapper except for the front 1/4 inch of one blade. Oh, and I do think a tiny trapper seems more useful than a peanut, although the peanut is nicer to look at.

I have a medium Case Trapper in "pocket worn" red bone that has absolutely perfect fit, finish, and spring snap. I really like the rather long clip blade that most trappers have but I would probably get more use from a small pen secondary blade than from the big spey. Also, that long spey blade adds weight for the pocket. So I don't dislike trappers but they are not my favorite.

I didn't get why the Spey blade has stayed on as long in as many patterns. I could understand 1 or 2 patterns for people that use it as a skinner. I would love to see a large Moose with the clip on one side and good wharncliff on the other. Doubt it will ever happen because Tobias said in several videos that the Moose was used by Trappers alot especially for skinning. Have a Boker Trapper that is a second, the Spey sticks up too far when closed and this fills your hand when using the main blade and is much more comfortable to use for me. The Boker version of the Trapper is more solid than the Rough Rider and has better blades. With the lucky malfunction of this knife it is an acceptable knife for use. First of all, I should stop watching your channel. I'm getting the urge to buy more knives and I have to agree with my wife... She says I don't need more.
I think it was about 2005 and I heard Schrade was selling their brand to Taylor and they would no longer be made in the USA. I had 3 Old Timers (one of them a #1940T single blade trapper) and I thought I should buy a few more American made Schrades before they disappeared from the shelves. I ended up with 8 more special edition trappers with scales in wood, bone and antler. One is an NRA commemorative and another is an Old Timer bird knife.
Yes, I like trappers... Mainly to collect.

You talking over the music ruined the music experience.

Yes, it was one of my earlier videos! Music was definitely too loud. In my more recent videos I have used either more relaxing, music or no music at all

You need a knife to peel a banana?

Probably should’ve clarified. I only use it to break the top of the banana. I can feel it just find myself. Thanks for the fantastic and well thought out comment.

@@markcoffman494 I carry a Case mini trapper, 1981 model. My 93 year old father gave it to me so it has a deep sentimental meaning to me. Carry on young man!
