A Builder's Own Mediterranean-inspired Forever Home (House Tour)

- Entry into Arcos, the forever home of Robert and Meghan Gray designed by Joe Adsett Architects and located in Brisbane’s leafy suburb of Paddington, is through a dramatic, warmly lit, arched tunnel of rendered concrete. On the other side, visitors are met with a series of grand and awe-inspiring interior and exterior spaces that have been inspired by the architecture of Spanish villas.
Dubbed ‘Arcos’ - Spanish for arches - this is the “forever home” of Robert Gray of high-end construction company Graya (which also built the home) and psychologist Meghan Gray. The ambitious design by architect Joe Adsett takes an existing classic, old Queenslander home and raises it two levels, with a new, more contemporary design beneath.
Robert Gray had a strong existing relationship with Adsett, with Graya having constructed a number of his firm’s projects, including Adsett’s own home, which has some similar features to Arcos in the use of arches and curves. The rendered concrete arches on the lower level of the house play upon the existing structural rhythm of the heritage Queenslander, with lightweight materials used on the upper storeys of the couple’s forever home.
The Spanish style architecture and its characteristic curves carry through to the interior design of Robert and Meghan’s forever home, with arched doorways and rounded edges seen throughout the interior spaces. A sweeping staircase links the three floors together and provides opportunities for interesting play of light on the rendered concrete walls and ceiling. A sunken living room with a curved, custom-made sofa provides a place for friends and family to congregate after dinner. The rounded kitchen island features vertical column-style detailing on the front, and echoes the curves of the nearby stair.
This is a house to spread out, to entertain family and friends with ease, and to enjoy living in. With its many luxuries so close to the city, Meghan has high hopes that Arcos will be their forever home - but time will tell.

Needs more stuff in the house. It is beautiful no doubt. But the conversation pit off to the side of the kitchen area just feels like a big couch in a multi-story cark park. I guess when the cameras aren't rolling they make it look more homely.

Once you get over the fact that there is barely any Mediterranean influence, it's actually pleasant. The outside that is. The arches really draw your eye especially against the backdrop of square boxes in the skyline.
TBH the interior looks confused. Maybe that is what is beautiful about it to the owners. The outside borrows the coral influences of the Mediterranean and then the inside chucks that out of the window. Also that overhead natural lighting at the staircase...are you sure that lights the kitchen? Although the drop lighting fixtures actually look good.
It has such a character and personality on the outside and then a calm removed atmosphere on the inside. Terribly interesting if nothing else.
What a beautiful job they've done! The essence of the original style and modern elements are in perfect harmony. Revised nostalgia.
Might have to weigh in on this too. The house is undeniably gorgeous. The staircase, the arches. I would argue that it is also very now and it will date. There’s something too ‘done’ about the overall effect which is more than just the styling, all makers and designers I really love. It’s missing a certain... spontaneity. A subtlety. I’m searching for the charm of imperfections, soul. I felt the most warmth during the glimpses of the interior of the cottage children’s wing which is part of the original house. Ironically it does look and feel like a hotel! Which is not necessarily a bad thing! But when I look at it, it reminds me of a girl who is overdone. She looks flawless, perfect, but I want to wipe off the layers of makeup and see what is underneath, find her essence if that makes sense? It’s missing as the French would say a certain je ne said quoix. An example that comes to mind is Xavier Corbero’s Labyrinth home in Spain who similarly uses arches but knew the power of imperfection.

I feel like that can be achieved if they were to actually display mementos of the life they've lived. Like little decorative gifts they've received, things they've collected over time, photos of events in their life (their wedding). Things that represent who they are and where they've been.
Well hopefully they weren't designing it for fashion, other people and their tastes but for themselves. House can't "date" if you design it for yourself.
I get it-- what I call "designed to death". It takes an exceptional designer/decorator to create a stylish space that also looks like people actually live in it.
Totally agree. It's sterile and very "of the moment". This house is also rented out for photoshoots so maybe that's also another reason.
@@gypsywoman84 I'm sure the photoshoots are chips compared to the MONSTER cost of this build...I mean the engineering alone to lift the house... But my instinct is that the owners would probably love the prestige of people shooting in the house. Thats the vibe I got from them. It's weird because I think about this project quite a lot. I think i'm searching for a reason why something so outwardly and conventionally beautiful repels me so much haha. It's a lack of design integrity, for me at least.

Beautiful interpretation ,so sympathetic to the Australian original on the outside yet so far far into its own inside .. hanging gardens of Babylon come to kind , very sculptural and soft, lovely play of light, all the materials seem to sing softly to each other- very hard to do. Love it.
