- An inspired super house leveraging its unique site nestled between the calm waters of Pittwater, the surf beach of Avalon and bushland in Clareville on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, M House envelopes the landscape in its very structure in an alluring and profound way. Rama Architects creates a home that viscerally connects inhabitants to the surrounding landscape while maintaining a sense of privacy and tranquillity.
Grounded in the idea that form follows function, this inspired super house is functional first, then focuses on layout and flow. As such, Rama Architects responded to the client's brief to create a Brazilian modernist-style home. This style is based on creating a sense of transparency and connection to surrounding waterways while maintaining a feeling of sanctuary.
With a tangible indoor-outdoor connection, there is an immediate sense of tranquillity as the plantings engulf the architecture of the home’s structure. Upon entering the inspired super house, one is greeted with a courtyard that welcomes filtered light through the above tree canopy. The home is delineated by floor-to-ceiling glass doors and leans heavily into subtropical design principles and Brazilian modernist philosophies surrounding the prioritisation of natural light and ventilation. Plants cascade down from the rooftop and are visible from every room, once again reiterating an appreciation of the beachside locale. Similarly, the main living area releases with ease to the water and western horizon beyond, while a sunken lounge is incorporated to align with the Brazilian modernist typology of the inspired super house and ensures no couches or furniture distract from the view.
The M House is grounded in a connection between masculine and feminine materials, which creates a juxtaposition of feeling safe but also vulnerable within the home. For example, privacy is created through the dominant brutal front façade and greenery engulfing the building. Similarly, a restrained palette of materials - including grey sandstone, concrete and tallowwood timber - speaks to a distinct modernist influence and creates a warmth that references the surrounding nature.
In this essence, Rama Architects balances an interpretation of modernism, the easy dialogue that prevails between nature and built form, and an expressive brutalist quality. The result is an inspired super house that evokes a tangible emotional connection between the inhabitants and the architecture of the home.

@@TheLocalProject In the context of a grand architectural masterpiece like this, a sunken lounge appeals to some, after all this measure of wealth brings a house cleaning team and a presumption of able-bodied family members. But I hate them with a passion as a family with members with a disability; and the cleaning aspect, they are useless for high tech homes utilising AI for robot vacuuming and mopping.

Wow, I rarely leave comments, but I couldn't resist this time. This house tour left me in absolute awe! I'm in awe of every detail, from the open water backyard view to the cozy, homey atmosphere with all those lovely plants. I can only hope that if I'm ever fortunate enough to buy a house for my parents, it'll be as stunning as this one. Kudos for creating such a dreamy space!

I love everything about that design, and that car too, even its colour. The client clearly has extremely good taste and the architect's aesthetic vision is very strong yet subtle. I bet the build was horribly expensive though. Totally worth it, if you have the funds.
Simply gorgeous. Adding a personal sound to the identity of this ‘living’ is pure genius. A brilliant concept similar to having a designer develop a fragrance for you only. I strongly believe that the difference between ‘liking’ your home and ‘loving’ it strongly depends on it’s unique qualities. Just like we tend to love the peculiarities of our partners, a creaky floorboard might become as endearing to you as your partner’s wonky eye, adding to the overall sense of familiarity. In design a lot of effort goes into the visual aspects of creating your space but feeling ‘at home’ could actually depend on easily overlooked factors like ‘familiar’ smells and the soundscape that constantly embraces us on a subconscious level. Deliberately adding a personalized sound to your home could in fact help your trigger auditive memories and anchored emotions decades later. Be it the smell of homemade bread or grandfather’s old mantelpiece clock, there are many factors that go into the recipe of ‘making a home’ 🏡

This one definitely steps into my top favs on this channel. The balance achieved is so beautiful. I especially love the dark, moody blue couch, yet it's soft and velvety to touch. The yellow pillows compliment it _so_ well. And of course, the greens and oranges throughout the home combined all bring about the perfect nature palette. Ugh, so good.

The home is very warm. The use of wood in the ceiling warms the home. I love the use of planta to soften the home. The floor to ceiling windows are fantastic since it allows the view to be enjoyed throughout the home. It's a very lovely home.

I love the Local Project. They keep finding such amazing projects by amazing architects that are hidden from the world. I just love each and every video these guys produce. And regarding this house... oh well, it is definitely worthy of a dream house. Absolutely loved it. Especially what they did to the balcony. No glass railings and low height parapet walls with lights in them and receeded away from the border for safety as well as providing space for planters to grow. Love every such detail.
