Steven Tyler (Why His Voice Is So Good)

  • What' the secret behind Steven Tyler's crazy vocal range and durability?
Steven Tyler is an absolute legend in the world of rock music and there's no doubt about that. From his distinguishable voice, high energy presence on stage, and hit songs, he’s definitely one of the greatest rock frontmen ever. But what’s really impressive, is his voice - what it can do, and how he’s been able to rock out all of these years.
Even after 40 plus years he’s still going strong and has managed to create a long and graceful tenure fronting the legendary rock band, Aerosmith.
His primal SCREAM has been heard all over the world and his ability to hit over 4 octaves of vocal range just proves how durable his vocal cords are despite being held over the decades of albums, concerts and showmanship. By the way, did you know that his two biggest singing influences were James Brown and Paul McCartney? But Steven, of course, is a complete original.
So let’s break it down as to how amazing his vocals really are. Although being a tenor in voice, did you know he was actually able to hit an E6 note in the song “Crazy”? Typically, a tenor voice is between C3 all the up to C5, the high C. But hitting an E6 is almost unheard of for a tenor. That’s something experienced sopranos can barely hit. Take a listen to a part of Aerosmith's "Crazy"…
But you might be thinking, “hey that was just the guitar!”....nope, it wasn’t just the guitar.! Take a listen to his isolated vocals on that part….
    Pretty high, huh?
But with all those falsettos notes, studio recordings, and raging concerts, and years of partying it up like a rockstar, you can be sure his voice has been stretched to the limit over the years. At one point, his vocal cords actually started bleeding after several Aerosmith shows.
It was believed the underlying cause of this was, to no surprise, years of performing without enough rest, as well as um, other things. A doctor even put a camera down his throat to analyze his vocal cords and estimated at one point, 780,000 collisions throughout an entire concert. The doc concluded in terms of vocal endurance, Steven Tyler is a super-athlete.
Since then, Steven Tyler learned new maintenance techniques and became virtually unstoppable since.
Not only can Tyler sing rock, but he’s even ventured into country music. You should check it out.
So what’s really the secret to his voice? Well there’s no true actual “secret” but to put it in a simple but educational way, the technique behind Steven Tyler's legendary voice is a singing style called Bel Canto, a 17th century Italian way of training you to sing the same way you talk. A natural breathing pattern which can help you and, of course, teaches you how to breathe properly, and consequently. Some other rock vocalists out there, including Sebastian Bach, use this same technique which, amazingly, makes your voice get even stronger and better the older you get.
It's surprisingly amazing how his voice is still very useful today even at 70 years old, considering how active he still is in his career. The way he screams, exposure to smoke, and other factors makes it hard to believe he can still belt out 'Dream On' and 'I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing' with ease. Not even years of use and abuse can kill off his famous raspy voice.
What he’s been able to do and what he’s accomplished clearly shows that he's one of the finest rock singers in the history of music. To this day, his voice remains almost exactly as it was 4 decades ago which very few singers can achieve. Now that’s “Crazy”.

I had the privilege of being front row at a Steven Tyler solo show in 2017, and he sang directly to me, hugging me, so that my ear was between his mouth and his mic. I was BLOWN AWAY at how clear and perfect his voice sounded directly in my ear. He's legit, his voice is legit. He gets accused by "fans" of lip syncing now and then. I can hear that he does use backing tracks sometimes, but he's always singing with them. In my opinion, he doesn't need them, he just has them for added security. He's allowed to, he can do whatever he wants! I can't stress enough how real his voice is, though. He does not use auto tune, that's his real voice. He sang a verse of Jaded and a bridge of Livin' on the Edge to me (that concert was one of the best experiences of my life, just need to say!). I've seen Aerosmith live over 50 times and I'm a singer myself. That man IS a super athlete with his voice; his technique is amazing. Great video, thank you!

      @lindsaypez1048 Před 4 lety +5

@@RodriRM_21 Totally agree! My only guess is that it seems these days he's shying away from the upper end of his chest voice. He sings low and he sings high, but he doesn't sing in the middle. It might not be comfortable for him anymore, so he has the backing track for the chorus of Dude. He's also a perfectionist so he might only have it because he wants to make extra sure the right notes are heard. It's like he can do it, but he's maybe not confident, sometimes his voice isn't reliable with those notes. No matter, I still love his voice and it still sounds fantastic.

    Great article.
don't know why but i've been binging on all things Aerosmith this weekend: concerts, interviews etc,
I discovered them age 17 in 1974 and their first two albums: AEROSMITH & Get Your Wings were
listened two every day, where I played them over & over on my turntable.
I dropped off once I had a kid & married.
Watching fabulous concerts from the rare 70's footage of their earlier days on up to 2019 has been revelatory!
Steven has only gotten better with age & wisdom.
He's a scamp and has a serious case of LSD, lead singer disease but man, he has earned everything the world has given him and even the right to claim the male equivalent of DIVA.
There are few people that have the energy & heart this man has.
    Long Live Aerosmith!!

This relatively unknown video has mystified the fuck out of me ever since I saw it when it first came out. To think that anyone could ever employ such a rarely understood and often never attempted form of singing, especially in the western, rock context with such success and accuracy is mind-blowing and I have no idea how he managed to come about learning that style. Even with all the information there is today it doesn't seem like there's any direct and clear areas where you can go to learn bel canto technique and that's infuriating because it's about one of the few things you could probably really benefit from as a singer, especially if you want a limitless range, but it's largely inaccessible.

The secret?...well, God created us all with small differences, so perfections or tiny imperfections in the vocal cords along with the size and shape of the sinuses, pallet, mouth, throat, and torso resonate in small differences from one person to the next. So, if you’re not naturally gifted, you can drastically improve your singing voice with tons of practice. although there are quite a few singers that can imitate other singers (which isn’t fair 😐 since I can barely carry a tune), there can only ever be 1 Steven Tyler, 1 MJ, 1 Steve Perry, 1 Aretha Franklin, so on....enjoyed the upload.

His isolated vocals are not that great or spectacular. He's good. He's pitchy at times. But it adds character. Ken tamplin did a great isolated vocal video on him.

A lot of tenor singers can go above C5. It's not uncommon. Most of those professional singers from the 70s could easily get close to Soprano C.

I am not a singer and not an expert, but I do know that you are as wrong as humanly possible about the key. Steven, while being absolutely amazing, has nothing to do with bel canto. Absolutely nada, nothing, period. There is no pushing of the voice in bel canto. Tyler does push and push and push. That defines it as completely impossible to be compatible with bel canto. So, sir, you are simply wrong. This has to be stated because there might be some confusion. Some kids might stumble across this video and say, Tyler is bel canto while he clearly isn't.
Completely true about the legend and one of the greatest of all times though. I love love love love love his work!!!!

sbphillips177 his technique it is based on a really squished and thin sound. Though with proper breath support from the diaphragm which is what people miss understands as bel canto. He has no big sound rather than a thin one with big development of the upper mixed register later in his singing career with a really forward placement and mask of the sound
