The big core bits need 1st gear, medium 2nd & under 2 inch-3rd gear, otherwise your drill motor will self destruct (thankx-4-uploading)
Here's his tip: for heavy drilling above your shoulder height and use a secure and stable plarform. Head injuries are no good. Used later on in the video. Loved the wall tie discovery - how to change a twenty minute job into a two hour one.
Great tip with the laser. Only thing I'd add is that, in my opinion, you should use a torque bar on the drill and support it the correct way. Some drills have a tight clutch and if the core jams, having the torque bar could prevent injury.
PTFE on the thread is also useful instead of the neoprene washers, for easier removal of the bit
Love the O ring tip James, thanks a lot mate!
Nice video as always. One of most down to earth CZcamsr
The O ring tips a game changer. I leant my core bit set to a sparkie on site and he welded the extension bar and arbour together. Typical Electrician. On a side note I believe the tool to remove the pilot bits called a drift. :)
I was drilling core drills 30 years ago and never used a laser level A D NEVER HAD A PROBLEM LINING IT UP BY EYE.
EASIER WAY OF DOING THIS JOB IS 1ST DILL A PILOT ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE WALL . GO OUTSIDE, CORE DRILL FROM OUTSIDE IN UNTILL YOU GET TO THE TILE, AND THEN FINISH OFF CUTTING THE TILE. YOU DONT HAVE AS MUCH MESS INSIDE , ALL THE MESS IS OUTSIDE. JOB DONE !!
OK I'LL BEAR THAT IN MIND NEXT TIME ROUND MATE - I REALLY NEED TO GET A LONG 10MM BIT!

Brilliant video. Learned a lot, especially that you can drill at such a large size and go through the wall without blowing out the brickwork externally. I install Air Conditioning and see this all the time with inexperienced trades people. Then they try to just bung the blown out holes with either silicon, expanding foam or sand and cement, which is disgraceful. The laser tip I especially found helpful. Thanks again. P.S. Would love to know the model of the drill you use as I am in the market for a new one.
Love watching your videos.
Great tips and tools. Thanks again James 😊
My golden piece of advice is to drill a small diameter, smaller than the pilot bit, guide hole all the way through the wall. This has two benefits: first, you can drill most of the hole from the outside avoiding break-out of the brick facing and it reduces the amount of dust inside the house; Second, the the guide hole provides a continuous path for the pilot bit to follow and the core bit will remain concentric with it. This second point is especially important since if you just rely on the pilot bit to provide a guide path it may wander off centre and then your core bit, now no longer concentric with it, will jam up with brick material. This effect seems to be worse when drilling into exposed wet walls and the ‘dust’ instead becomes a clogging wet clay.
Great tip about the o ring 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you great tips that Bosch vac is awesome never seen one like it!
I have got that drill , didnt think its meant for core drilling ?? I saw a guy smash his eye socket and break his nose using a regular drill while core drilling when the core got stuck and the drill kicked out and I've nearly broke my wrist using the wrong drill. I would only use a dedicated core drill
nice tip on the o-rings, i usually stick a bit of copper grease on the threads and they come off a doddle.
Doesn’t cover the need to drill the last couple of inches from the outside , in. This will avoid break-away of the outside wall surface, particularly if it happens to be rendered.
That laser level is quite a good idea. I usually do them fairly good by eye - by i've cored out a few fans which were a right git to fit afterwards! I'm a spark and only do 4, 5 and sometimes 6 inch holes. I got me a Bosch GSB 162-2RE recently and its pure bliss to use. Pisses through anything I've come acorss so far. Evan a 6" was no trouble. Its quite a beast and not cheap - but so much easier and faster than SDS for fans. 1600 watt I think. I lent it to a plumber for a day and he brought one himself that evening he was so impressed with it.
Can you do a video of the Bosch wall detector? Would be interested to see if it’s better than the usual throw a 6 to start stud detector type scanner!
I remember when I was an apprentice and I got the fantastic job of core drilling 9 holes in reinforced concrete in a hospital for the job we where on , character building they told me 😢😂
Loving the big Ronnie pal 👍🏼
A very good Tuesday morning to you sir
Wouldnt you drill through at a slight downward angle? (from inside the house) to help avoid rain water running back down the pipe through? You mentioned to go in horizontal ....
Not on a combi boiler flue 👍
Not on any condensing boiler flue, has to rise or some flues have internal rise in flue so can go straight
@@joeker2023didnt he say it was for an extractor fan? I'm sure I heard him say that
Ptfe also works well round the thread if you have no Orings nice core set that
James, The angled bit of metal is a drift.
Love the o ring trick
Bosch hoover is a game changer
Please 🙏 🙏 🙏 can you help me. I am fitting a cooker hood in my kitchen, and it has I silver flexy pipe 6" to go through the wall BUT the old fan needed a 4" hole. Is there a way to make the 4" hole into a 6" hole, or should I put a reducer on it instead.?????
Could you maybe wrap ptfe around it if you don't have the o rings available to help it undo 🤔
Congratulations 👏
Well come back brooo
a bit of copper wire of copper slip will also stop the bit sticking to a chuck. Also when removing a bolster and foot in and on the diamond bit vent helps to hold it from twisting when removing it if its stubborn.
Copper slip is the boy
I use a copper 22mm olive. Brass is no good, it doesn't crush down.
Aw man, that o ring hack is gonna save me a few headaches 😊👏👏
Great video... As a bricklayer allways cut the brickwork from the face side , not from the inside to the outside. This generally ends up causing serious damage to the face brickwork...
No worries here, it just cuts through it,.
Yes, the face can blow out pushed from behind. Replacing ties in a edwardian facade we had to erect scaffold instead of just accessing internally because of this.
I am sold!!! It comes with an airport wheely case 😲😲😲😲
How do u rate the Bosch gas m afc ? I’ve just bought one and would like to know what u think?
Loving the socks mate 👍🏻
Nice
Recommend drill machine for this type of drill bit?
I would’ve cracked the tile drilling the pilot hole let alone using the core bit..cracking job 👏🏻👍🏻
I dont understand why you havent been offered a TV show.. this channel is my total go to for all plumbing and im flipping between videos from this week and 8 years ago for new stuff im doing now. I started with the ptfe video years ago at my last house. Just moved
Yes having just watched the shit my wife watches i concur - you should be on TV
Who even watches tv anymore?
@ak0792 me and the other chap here, so that's 2/3 in this sample
note to James, ear defenders are also a must, throughout all stages of the drilling. The best core bits in the business are these: Spectrum BZX ZENITH Dry Diamond Core, if you can afford them they eat brick and concrete for breakfast.
I've never tried them, my last set I wore out in a year and I spent quite a lot of money on them. Do they last?
@@jacbisgood2221 had mine 5 years, and they still perform as new.
What to do when concrete lintel in the way and below is the supporting wall with window to the side?
I use the Bosch SDS combi drill which is cabled then the vacuum is turned on and off by the power button on the drill. I tried cordless and went back to this.
thx
Another tip for Resharping your drill bit is to tap the teeth with a Metal file To expose the diamonds. This will increase the speed of your drilling and it will take half the time
Any tips on how to remove bits stuck in the chuck? 😂
I've just finished a core for a 110mm waste through double brick cavity (with external render).
Nothing broke per se, but the little BB in the chuck is jammed, so the bit won't release. And even though I sprayed the threads with PTFE, the SDS bit is seized to the extension, which is seized to the core cup.
Spanners & hammers just isn't doing it. I'm in a right old pickle. I'll be able to cut loads of large cores, but fk'all else.
Don't you put a drop on all penetrations to the exterior of a building? I loved this video! I remember purchasing my first core drill, and learning how to use it. It is a great tool that works wonderfully. Cheers!
Anything that drains liquids ie soil, waste, combi boiler flue etc. Not required for extract fans.
I thought you needed a slight slip down to allow moisture to flow away from the fan
Shame you didn’t use any Bosch tools today, I was looking forward to seeing them. 😂
O ring tip was a good one 😗
Hi can this cut concrete block thank you
I feel called out… 😂 I’m willingly lazy 😂😂😂
What face mask/resp you using?
Currently I have absolutely no need for a core drill even though I've just invested in an SDS drill however they look like serious kit and I'm tempted......
My wife got her Core Bits out last last. Thanks for the tips but you really shouldn't be drilling holes at head height as in 3:49 of clip. What about using some grease on the augur instead of O'rings?
Those diamond bits are meant to be used at a much higher speed than the 1500RPM the SDS can muster. Even a corded drill bill not go above 2000 RPM. That is why an angle grinder with about 9000 RPM is the correct tool for the job. These bits Mill not drill. An SDS is about max pressure and grinding away. The angle grinder will mill the surface but at higher speeds without the same pressure, just move the tolerance from side to side and up and down. This will keep it cooler, and extend the life of the diamonds.
Whats the point in using slotted cores with a vacuum - use solid body cores and the dust extraction works a treat. Why waste time removing the wall ties as they can take ages to remove and the core cuts through them fairly easily. And why did you drill horizontally instead of drilling downwards at a shallow angle to prevent any rainwater backtracking into the building?
@plumberparts how come you don't just drill a pilot all the way through and drill from the outside? Is it just so you done blow the tiles?
not really needed, the thing comes with a "pilot" drill bit anyway. It's easier to start the hole so the coring bit's pilot can take over.
He was lucky not to blow out a brick face, but if you take it steady and not apply too much force I think that helps
Another comment he said he would but needs a longer 10mm bit 😄
Perhaps difficult inside but a continual flow of water will get though brick much faster.
Literally just moved some pipes to allow me to core through the wall. If only i could find my 10mm bit!
Pop over to south Wales and do this to one of our stone walls 😅
It would be interesting to see the wall detector in more detail. I have Bosch's much cheaper version and it's never worked properly (and I've had several of them) - it's always showing the wall as being live even when there's no wiring in the wall - WHATS GOING ON BOSCH if you are reading this?
Are you sure you're not moving it too fast?
@@amg863 Even if I move it at a snails pace it still has the same.problem. I just think it isn't very good at doing what it's supposed to do. It is reasonable at finding studwork and nails - I'll give it that.
OK that's all well and good for a normal two brick and cavity wall. Now my house is 170 years old with 850mm thick solid wall with loose fill in the centre. How do you tackle that 😂
would never use a battery drill for large core bits a dedicated mains core drill every time!
Never heard it called “core bit drill” before. Usually just core bit, or I’d expect the title to say “how to core drill” hahaha
Who did that tiling in the bathroom? Badly set out!
Cordless dremel will sort out little deep bits of metal that pliers cant handle
Should have drilled a 16mm pilot hole with an sds then put the pilot bit into the core bit then drill
The laser was useful 🤣
How much did you pay for that Bosch detector that doesn’t detect wall ties?
is it a bosch .....i didnt quite catch it 😛 good vid
brought to you by Bosch 🤣

Why not just stitch drill the wall around a circle template, avoiding the need to buy core bits or risk them jamming in the wall?
Not nearly as clean of a hole, each bit punching through can cause blowout, and you have to drill a lot of holes for a big hole like this. Can work though.
@@ravenstarver1360 - A heck of a lot of holes true, but core bits seem pretty slow as well. And the fan body should cover up those rough edges. As for blow-out, I'd suggest turning off hammer action before you reach full depth of the wall.
Lovely Bosch kit - sponsored? ps central bar thingy is known as a Mandrel
I love how the start of the video is using a £700 tool that no diyer will have 😂 even as a plumber of 10 years I still haven’t got even a cheap version of that cable pipe detector tool 😅
Pro tip: you can buy a longer guide that sits further in the pilot hole. Less chance of it flying off in the wrong direction
Or you can use PTFE tape on your core bits to make sure the cores come apart.
This is what I do 👌

How the f*** do you get the bit of the Arbor after?
Did you mention that the drill should just be in turning mode, not hammering? NB! And yeah let the tool work, don't force it. And be prepared for the bit binding, which can be a real arm twister.
09:40
@@codenamenel Cheers was not sure, I think most DIY'ers will try hammer mode, which will ruin the bit at the least
WTF James, you look like Skeletor in your thumbnail. :)
Number of videos since Bosch was mentioned: zero.
I did get the camera though.
Who put the fan isolator inside the bathroom?!! Lol
If you in the right zone why not?
Don’t bother with the o ring trick . When it jams in the wall you won’t be able to reverse out without unwinding the core bit from the arbor.
Vacuume not a hoover. I’m sure Bosch are thrilled 9:03
Take a shot every time he mentions bosch😂
PK Meter! lol
Bits having a hole in the back to Knock it out sometimes makes the job take longer.
Erm... Just remind me... Which manufacturer makes all this equipment... Not sure I caught it!!!
