    Hi everyone, welcome to Abbey's Kitchen! In today’s highly request episode of What I Eat In A Day CZcamsr reviews, I will be taking a look at MakeupShayla.
    A few disclaimers:
    1) The information in this video is for education and entertainment purposes only, so you should always speak to a health care provider about your unique health needs.
    2) The recommendations for each individual meal I review is designed to give you a variety of ideas on how to optimize meals for balance, variety and satiety. Whether or not one individual meal or even one day is balanced or “healthy” does not matter in the grand scheme of ones health, especially if a person is eating in response to their physical and emotional needs. I give suggestions as examples and inspiration for you, but you can also gather this data for yourself over time by listening to your own body and figuring out what feels good.
    3) Please be kind in the comments, here and on Shayla's channel
    4) TRIGGER WARNING: some graphics and discussions may be disturbing to some viewers so feel free to skip this video.

    Could you do a video on “portion distortion” in EDs? I’m four months into recovery and it’s still something that causes me a lot of anxiety. I’ll feel horribly guilty and and it can take hours or even a night’s sleep to rationalize that my “binge” was actually a pretty insignificant amount of food.

      @@AbbeysKitchen I would love this too! I'm a good year and a half - two years into recovery and I still have this issue. I plate myself food and end up second-guessing and immediately putting some away in a container for later, feeling like it's a massive amount of food I was about to eat... Then I end up still hungry and going back for seconds. I'm aware I could just comfortably eat the entirety in one sitting, but something about seeing it all on the plate like that still triggers a fear/guilt response.

      she actually has said in many videos that weighing or calorie tracking can be useful for some people, but it is just another tool to understand nutrition, and not necessarily the most accurate or healthy (not the most healthy because many people find it hard to stop weighing and counting once they formed the habit, resulting in guilt over not-weighed foods, and then this can become even more extreme). i do agree that many people need to learn about portion sized though

      Same!! My calorie deficit and food weighing phase really helped me see that I needed less than I thought to feel full and satisfied. Now I'm working on intuitive eating, but I still view my previous weighing and calorie counting as beneficial in my journey with food. I do see how it can be very harmful for others and I appreciate that she creates content to support those folks.

  • @latiasmith5094
    @latiasmith5094 Před 4 lety +68

    I don't have a suggestion for a specific person, but I'm curious to know your thoughts about mini cuts. I believe that's what it's called. Basically, you're in a caloric deficit for 2-3 weeks and then you eat your maintenance calories for 1-2 weeks. It's supposed to be more effective at reducing body fat and retaining muscle mass, but it's also supposed to be a more sustainable diet since you're not in a deficit the entire time. I looked into it because I want to be more active and lose some body fat, but I don't really want to lose a lot of weight. I actually like how I look, but I just want to feel stronger and be more active in my day to day.

    Completely agree that society should put more of am emphasis on eating and enjoying meals rather than forego them for "productivity" however the conversation goes a bit deeper. Many north Americans eat on the go or choose fast food options out of necessity rather than choice. I believe all conversations regarding food and health must also include references to socioeconomic status. Other than that, I really enjoyed this video and your channel! :)

      Overweight and intuitive eating doesnt work together i am really sorry for saying this but intuitive eating is what caused you to get overweight in the first place instead you need to actually start thinking before you eat and ask yourwelf "am i really hungry ? Do i need this food right now in the Moment and so on" even people who are really in tune with their body and food have knowledge about nutrition Still have problems with intuitive eating you need to start tracking your food and eat in a calorie deficit and eat calorie dense food which still are yummy and fill you up but yeah thats just my opinion

    • @AMortalDothApproach
      @AMortalDothApproach Před 4 lety +35

      Tracking my diet allowed me to see how little protein and fat I was getting. It also showed me that having a single "bad" day isn't enough to ruin my diet... I'm not like, emotionally traumatized by "going over" on my calorie target though, like the rest of Abbey's audience seems to be.

    • @sfia
      @sfia Před 4 lety +20

      @@AMortalDothApproach this !!! i had no idea i was only hitting about 25% of my daily protein needs and wondering why i was always hungry until i started counting macros. it doesn't need to be disordered for everyone, and i think abbey sort of turns every single person away from calorie counting. still like some of her points though!

    • @shariwelch8760
      @shariwelch8760 Před 4 lety +9

      When you're obese, you know when you're binging. No calorie counting will stop you from going on a binge, either. Binging needs a mental health angle to control, because that person is binging regardless of any logical facts. Most obese people I know are very aware of diets, macro content, nutrition, calorie content, etc. because they have tried every diet known to human kind. There is something else going on besides calories and counting them.

    • @Terminal_Boneitis
      @Terminal_Boneitis Před 4 lety +3

      @@shariwelch8760 Too true, I know there's a full day's worth of calories in a bag of chocolate stuffed marshmallows (and probably a week's worth of fat) but that doesn't stop me from eating it ALL. That binge, guilt, restrict cycle is totally psychological. That being said, I think that long term binge eating can wreak havock on your ability to listen to your body when it comes to hunger/fullness and portion size. So, early on in my intuitive eating journey, I did track my calories and overall nutrition for a week of eating my favorite everyday meals, snacks, and treats. This helped me tune into my nutrition, and identify why I craved or just enjoyed certain foods. It also got me started on really loving eating nourishing foods. Not a permanent thing, but for me it was a positive experience and an eye opener.

      Nicole Richie is sooo beautiful but she has also struggled with eating disorders! I’m not saying there is ANYTHING wrong with her body I loveeee Nicole so much but I wouldn’t want you to compare yourself and your body to someone who is sick or has been sick! With that being said, I would recommend HCLF and cardio to get a “thin” body.

      Here are a couple of articles you might find helpful.
      www.webmd.com/diet/features/bmi-drawbacks-and-other-measurements#1
      www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/265215
      It basically comes down to extreme deviations of height -- tall, short -- skewing the results, and that it can't account for muscle mass. It can be helpful as a general measurement and starting point for the physician, but shouldn't be used as the sole barometer of health. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Serena Williams was technically obese according to BMI; she's a solid wall of muscle, which weighs more than fat.
      As for your goal, it could just come down to genetics, how and where you store fat, how and where you build muscle. I'll use myself as an example. I run. You think I'd be skinny, as that is the stereotypical image of a runner -- and my weight is low -- but I have thick legs because my body built up the muscle there. Even if you starved yourself, you might never be able to have a body like Nicole Ritchie.
      I get how tempting it is to have body goals, and those can be helpful for motivation, but you also need to keep in mind what is healthy for *your* body. Good luck!

      A lot of how you look is genetics for example I was underweight and still never got a thigh gap or some people will never get a flat stomach without torturing themselves and severely restricting. Maybe your goal should be being a happier healthier version of yourself whatever that looks like and not an ideal body that's impossible to achieve for most people

    So I know you probably have a very long list of people to do these reviews on, but I’ve seen a disturbing trend emerging recently in British mom bloggers, particularly Kerri Whelpdale and Emily Norris. Particularly Kerri who’s been on a weird faux intuitive eating fat free kick. (Today’s recipe included a recipe for breaded fish in the air fryer which she coated in white breadcrumbs and egg but refused to use any oil in the fryer because that was “fattening”.) And Emily’s been posting recipes for fat free orange-oatmeal muffins loaded with sugar as an ideal breakfast for kids. It’s a bit weird.

    Wowzer. I look at Shayla's behavior and recall my years of eating the same meals daily. It was disordered for me and, I later realized, a mechanism to cope with clinical depression. Forward to some critical and altering events of the past eight years, and depression was joined by PTSD, anxiety disorders, and a diagnosed eating disorder. That day after day of eating the same thing expanded to day after day of eating perhaps with some variety, but measuring and tracking just about everything that went into my mouth. Down to exact tablespoons of olive oil used when sauteing or browning. No bueno. Not for me. My nutritionist is well-versed on diabetes (I'm T2), hypothyroidism (since birth), and eating disorders, my personal trifecta of affect. In our last visit she and I discussed orthorexia and how my controlled eating was closing me off from intuitive eating. I stopped measuring and feel SO much better now. I'm tuning in to hunger, satiety, and what my body tells me it wants. All things I've heard you for months talking about. 😘

    You talked a lot about snacks in this video. I have tried, several times, to eat 4-6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones. I never feel full and satisfied, even with protein, fat, carbs, and veggies in each. I feel much better with three big meals per day. I do eat snacks when I am extra hungry, but it's usually only when I am very active.
    Everyone tells me I should feel better with 6 small meals or snacks between meals, but that is just not reality for me. I just wondered if you had any thoughts on that.

      If you feel better having 3 large meals a day then go for it! That's basically the best choice for you then :) I think many people recommend having smaller meals more frequently because especially in fat/weight loss you don't feel like you're on a diet really! Plus, sometimes it can be hard for your digestion to process very big meals so having snacks and smaller meals can ease digestion. But honestly, if you feel like 3 meals works, your digestion is fine and you have enough energy throughout the day then perfect! 😊

If she feels energized and doesn't mind eating the same thing everyday I don't see a problem at all. That idea is SO different from the high-protein diets that are mainstream in the US, could you maybe do a video looking into it? There are a lot of studies done in mice and primates. There’s a lot of oxidative stress associated with using protein as an energy source over carbohydrates. That oxidative stress occurs at the cellular level. Also high protein diets produce more waste products such as phosphorus and nitrogen waste products. But there’s not a lot of research about that. A lot of primate studies have shown that through free eating, the typical macro count (carbs:protein:lipids) is 45%:15-30%:25-40: 30 % protein you see when a primate tried to optimize nutrition during reproductive periods and more carb rich periods during seasonal periods. Some people have suggested me to try it and they claim that is incredibly beneficial for our health, but since I am in anorexia recovery I am scared that it will lead me back to fall into my old eating habits.In addition to that, I’ve also heard that we should have at least a 10 hours fast between dinner and breakfast, so I don’t know if I should space those meals more. Thank you so much for helping me with your intuitive eating series, I find them really helpful for me since I am trying to eat as intuitively as possible( Even though My hunger cues have returned, I usually find myself not eating if I am not extremely hungry).Xx

      Don’t do it! From my experience it is not helpful in recovery and keeps you from staying in tune with your body signals. Intermittent fasting damaged my metabolism and shut down my hunger signals and it is taking me years to get back in touch with my system. Intermittent fasting also interrupts the female hormonal system and is only sustainable for men. Everyone that practices it may feel good in the beginning, but it is not beneficial longterm for females. Focus on healing your mind and your body will love you 😍

I understand how it can be triggering to some people but she should also acknowledge that its helpful to many too. I have been able to lose weight and know how bad somethings can be for me just by the nutritional value of the foods I'm eating. she literally said calorie counting can be a helpful tool but it's an inaccurate method and doesn't rly do as much as ppl credit it for + there are ways to figure out portion control which are less mentally exhausting. also consider how horrible some ppl feel after they try to abandon this habit of weighing and counting constantly, it messes up more ppl than u think. also, not trying to be rude but maybe u didn't listen close enough to abbey's message about calorie counting and weighing foods. peace

      @@7thCobweb I watched the whole video so that's inaccurate of you to assume I wouldn't comment other wise; I actually watch a lot of her videos as I'm subscribed to her. But her views on calorie counting are very apparent on almost all of her videos. She maybe have said that its helpful at some point but she follows it up with a comment where she says that she thinks that it doesn't work and that its inaccurate...which isn't the point. The reason why most people do it like myself is because it helps you track what you eat. It doesn't mean that you'll obsess over it like she says everyone does. I don't count every single calorie I cosume but I try to learn what has what and how many some general foods have and what is better to eat and what isn't. Things like that I believe people should be aware of specially if you are obese or morbidly obese and trying to lose weight to be healthier. It doesn't mean that your life will revolve around it. Learning how to eat includes knowing the nutritional content of food and knowing what's appropriate to eat at a certain moment.

    I understand that you do not approve of tracked meals, however, for some people it is very very helpful. I track daily like she does, but I eat foods based off of how I am feeling. I also have no problem going out and not tracking a meal and eating intuitively (when I go out haha). Tracking my meals allows me to reach my athletic goals, and not under eat. I was eating so little for the longest time thinking I was eating enough and not thinking about calories or macro intake. But, as soon as I started I realized how little I was eating in relationship to my activity levels. You may think weighing food and macro tracking is triggering, but, I do urge you to take into account everyones bodies, experiences, goals, and mindsets. I 100% love these videos, but, sometimes I do feel like you don't want to approve of people who enjoy and benefit from a more structured way of eating, which for some people is necessary or more enjoyable.

    I have been having issues with digestion after a helicobacter infection. Intermitted fasting has been very helpful for me. I am not that strict tho, I do 14/10 to 18/6 depending on how hungry I feel. I eat and break my fast whenever I am hungry. I also am Muslim and have been doing the Ramadan, the annual fasting month, for most of my life. I am therefore used to fasting.

Fasting , which is so big in the keto community - also, I'd love to see a video on how many servings of fruits and veggies make sense in the average day - and I love that you take the time to talk about the nutrition of each food, and why variety helps!
