Nesting Boxes for Chickens - How to Build Chicken Nest Boxes

  • Learn how to build your own set of wooden nesting boxes for your pet chickens. I minimized the amount of work by having my big plywood sheet cut into smaller pieces at the hardware store. These nesting boxes are perfect for when when you don't have room inside of your chicken coop. Our ladies lay in these every single day! All you really need is just some screws and a drill to put this project together.

    **Dimensions**
    Working with half inch plywood, you'll need three walls cut at 13"x48" (floor, backing, roof), and five diving walls cut to 12.5"x12", the front lip is 3"x48". You can customize any of these dimensions to your own liking, but hope this video just gives you a general idea of how to put one together.

    Just an idea of how I made mine, I put the floor of the next boxex on a slant of about one inch, so the eggs can roll off, the back of the box cut about two inches shorter,so the eggs can Roll off to a tray at the back, that can be made from fencing or more glamorous trays from craft shops, kitchen shelves.the floor of the nest box I put rubber mat,cut to size ,used also for young calls, I positioned the boxes out from the wall, just enough to walk behind them to collect the eggs, I also raised them about two feet of the floor,as the hens would want to sleep in them at night, and dirty them, finally I made a fold up step to stop going into them,opened it in the morning and the hens can hop up to the step to lay the eggs,its great the eggs are always clean,the don't even notice the eggs rolling off. This might be helpful.

      Update Lowe's by my house would only do two cuts per piece of wood, according to the "rules". Something about overusing the machine and if others need to use it. (No one else was using it lol) Anyways, I just had them cut panel twice to fit in vehicle and make it easy to cut at home, a cut at 26 inches, and 52 inches. (Then I split those in half to get the four long pieces from video.)

      Thank you very much! Hope you get to try making one of these! Un fortunately, I don't have a video for the slanted roof one as I just used extra wood scraps I had laying around the yard and honestly didn't think I would even have enough material to finish one, but I did. I was just too busy trying to figure out how to piece something together with the scraps lol.

      We have it about 16 inches off the ground but just make it high enough so the chickens can jump in comfortably but also feel safer that something on the ground can’t steal their eggs. We have ours on 2 cinder blocks on each side. Thanks for watching!

    Is there any way you can make another video of these nesting boxes.the measurements are not coming out right.i built one yesterday and the back of the box wall and top is overlapping about 1/2 inch.this is how I cut them.i cut 3 peices at 13 in x4ft.i had to cut two pieces at 12 1/2 inches by 4ft.you can't get 5 dividers from a 4 ft piece.i cut another piece at 12 and a half by 4 ft to get the fifth divider. What throws off the measurements is the dividers. When I first put the two sides on the ends there was a lip overlapping. When I flipped it over upside down like you did in the video I had to set the back wall on top of the overlapping lip which is 13 in.
    that wall is overlapping when I set the top of the box on there. I wish I could show you a picture of it but like I said the dividers is throwing everything off. So the 4-foot piece I cut the dividers from was 12 and a half by 4 ft and I cut 5 dividers at 12 inches. If you look in your description that's what you got. You got three pieces at 13 in. One piece at 12 and a half inches by 12 in. one piece at 3 in. the box came out okay it's just the overlapping from the back of the box and top of the box.

    Just curious if you know with certainty that chickens aren't roosting on that bar on the front, just seems inviting, I love it but would worry they roost there, thanks. Just picked up a bunch of wood, I'm converting part of a garage into a chicken house

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  Před 2 lety +1

      We collect our eggs at night when we lock up the coop as our evening routine. The chickens are always sleeping on the roost bars, not the nests. If you want to prevent that have your roost bar area (sleeping arrangements) higher than the nesting boxes. Chickens desire to sleep as high as possible as instinct for predator safety and to show their dominance in the pecking order. Just don’t have the roosts too high or they could get a leg injury flying down in the morning. You could omit the bar easily though because they really don’t require it, even our ducks jump in the boxes and we just have this sitting on cinderblocks for height reference. We have 2 stacked on top of each other so the bar comes in handy for the chickens wanting to lay in the top box. They like to walk in and peak their head in to decide which box they want to choose to lay in that day 😂 silly ladies. Good luck on your build!
