  • I'm taking a little break from the greenhouse today to make my chickens some new nest boxes. Because my flock has grown I just don't have enough nest boxes for them. So I'm making some new ones out of 5 gallon buckets. Hopefully, they like them!

    Now you need perched for them to fly onto so they can easily walk into the nest or just put the 4 top nests down on the same level as the 1st 2 nests at almost floor level. They can hurt thrir feet if they jump from too great of a hight.

    I just made a coop for 4 by putting 4 kitty litter buckets in my old compost box! I'm finishing the roof this weekend! Thanks so much! How are the chickens liking their new home?

      Nice repurpose! I love giving old things new purpose. The chickens are using the nest boxes relatively well, they only use the bottom and middle two buckets, I still need to add some bars or something else they can use to land on, the lip of the bucket is too thin and gives them nothing to hold onto, but otherwise they use the ones they can easily get to no problem

    I like your idea pretty cool. Also you can make them out of plastic milk crates. Love your video. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you! They’re still holding out on eggs right now, so hopefully soon they’ll show some interest in the new boxes 🤷‍♀️

    Greeting from the Philippines. Do try to bolt all the bucket together and screw 'em to the wall

      No snow here yet, but we are starting to get frosty nights and foggy mornings. It’s definitely on its way!

    Couldn’t have ran large head screws in the bottom of the buckets to hold them onto the wooden wall ?

    • @FarmGirlInProgress
      @FarmGirlInProgress  Před měsícem

      I could have, but I didn’t have any large head screws and the wall is only about half an inch thick, so it wouldnt hold very well over time. So this worked better in the long run

    What did you do for the bottom lip on the box? I live the design for easy clean up. Genius!!

    • @FarmGirlInProgress
      @FarmGirlInProgress  Před rokem +2

      I just cut the lid of the bucket out and left a lip to keep bedding and eggs from falling out. Super easy to clean!

    Is the height an issue for the chooks to get to ?

    • @FarmGirlInProgress
      @FarmGirlInProgress  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Their roost bars are another foot higher than these, so no height issues. They use the bottom and middle buckets fine but they don’t like the top ones, I want to add some rest bars in front of them for them to have an easier time flying up to them and landing

    How far off the ground did you put the first nesting box bucket

    • @FarmGirlInProgress
      @FarmGirlInProgress  Před 4 měsíci

      Roughly a buckets space I believe, it may be a bit more than that. I didn’t measure lol

    How do the chicken get to the top ?

    • @FarmGirlInProgress
      @FarmGirlInProgress  Před rokem +3

      They typically only use the two bottom and middle nest boxes, but I have a few chickens that like to roost on the top of it. They just jump/fly up there. Chickens can easily jump/fly 8+ feet. Their roost bars are higher up then those top buckets.
