    Why cut the side of the box? Couldn’t you just leave the box on its side and chicken go in the top?

    • @redshomestead
      @redshomestead  Před rokem +2

      You absolutely can. In this room, they would simply fly over it. If we did it this way, I would recommend securing it better than we did because the chicken will land on the top edge of the box making it very top heavy and could flip out.
      We designed this with a cutout with the intention of putting them in a mobile tractor. Within the mobile tractor, there isn’t enough room to fly over it. Also, having the cut out makes it easier for my kids to collect eggs with their height, and not having to move the box.

    I LOVE MY BLUE GIRLS! One says they're Sapphire Gems another says they're Delaware Blues and then Lavender Orpingtons ( in the sun they look lavender). What's in a name? I love them and they lay jumbo eggs pretty steadily all year! I agree. Cut up a black bin and slide them down in between the boxes. The hens will feel private. Mine want dark spaces and fuss at me if I turn on any light!! LOL!

      Our little sapphires have been very steady layers all year. Since making this video, they continue to use their nesting boxes, at least 1 of the 3 lol

    Just a thought a piece of cardboard to fit as a liner under the straw and could just slide out and place on compost heap when soiled.

      That’s a good thought! My hens have taken on the habit of just pushing all the hay out and laying straight on the plastic

    Nice! I also put crushed oyster shells... just saying, it looks like you have an extra spot there... that's all😉 I also try to crush their egg shells up and give them back to them in kitchen scraps at least once or twice a week. Those Gems are such pretty birds! We just added a pair to our main mixed flock, and we are hoping to see them start laying any day now. At what age did yours start laying for you?

    • @redshomestead
      @redshomestead  Před 2 lety

      Ours are about 4 months old so that haven’t started laying yet. We read that they start sooner than most breeds though, so we are preparing early. Do you believe there is a benefit to oyster shells vs aragonite?

    • @MudfossilGaia
      @MudfossilGaia Před 2 lety +1

      @@redshomestead is that a calcium supplement? If so the only difference would be that the crushed oyster shells can also double as a grit for them as it breaks down. I still give them grit though. I just liked the thought of a slow release of the calcium as it breaks down over several days. Our Gems are the same age... they were an impulse buy just before the chick season ended, lol 😆 we are so bad about that! The next month they had the cutest little bunny, and since it was my birthday...well....lol
      I have a homesteading channel also, we've only recently started sharing our story over there if you're interested in what we are doing...

    These “homesteader” vids are becoming just like looking up a recipe…you have to wait for them to show you all the other crap you didn’t search for. Search for will chickens use milk crates as nesting boxes…then you have to watch 10 minutes of a chicken dust bathing or them trying to get the chicken into the box…so does it work? Not sure, but they built some random piece by piece bar

    • @redshomestead
      @redshomestead  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I agree with you that I have seen this in homesteading channels, including my own. The reason I focus videos this way is because the vast majority of my subscribers continue to watch us because they want to see our journey and our story. I have heard from other channels like mine that this is similar to them.
      I generate the title based upon the “main theme” of the video, if there is one.
      I have seen many homesteading channels use shorts to give a more direct “how to” videos that gets you the info immediately, without the storyline.
