    Perhaps even more harrowing than the progression towards these new weapons, was the regression back towards the basic weapons from the past. In stark contrast to the advancing technology of the twentieth century, many soldiers who were stuck in the close-corridors of trench warfare found themselves back in the medieval era.

    8:30 I make armor as a semi professional hobby. In my practical research based on the finds in europe, I have found that distributing the weight onto the shoulder, and the hips through articulated plates would fix the back strain issue. It would still be heavy, but as long as you aren't expecting the man to move as a regular soldier would, then yes i could easily see this being used in ww1. The problem is it wouldn't be hard to just bring a larger gun to defeat the armor.

    Some years ago I did colonial re-enactments. I was able to get a replica war club used by north Indians during the French and Indian war. I bought it from a person wit a duplicating machine. He had an original war club as a pattern. He was making these war clubs for the Army rangers in Afghanistan.

    I would assume the trench catapult was built less for the reason of not having to stand up and throw hand grenades (as that can be done from the safety of the trench) but more because it has a longer range, a more predictable, accurate and adjustable flight path, and to have a form of very light artillery to be used and directed more individually by smaller unit sizes.

    One thing that stuck with me, was a proposal of how such a knife should be used (I forget by who, someone in the British leadership).
    He proposes that the knife should be held in a reversed grip, and used to stab at the faces of enemies in a busy trench. Not to try to kill, but to cause as much chaos as possible.

    Thank you for making this video! I always knew that WW1 had a medieval vibe going for it thanks to its body armor, maces and the German/British culture of associating their militaries with knights.
    An element that was missing were the extra helmet plates that were attached to the M16 Stahlhelm and the more flexible, segmented German body armor. Which, in itself, could be seen as a nod back to the Roman lorica segmentata.

    Handheld "primitive" weapons like clubs with spikes, hammers, axes & other blunt tools were used during night trench raids. It doesn't get any savage than that, up close and personal and hopefully without much noise as to not spook the surrounding trenches, hence the weapons choice.

  • @NGMonocrom
    @NGMonocrom Před rokem +1

    Unfortunate to see that the most common trench knife wasn't mentioned. When stringing along barbed wire, long metal spikes were used to help hold the wires in place. These were sometimes crafted into improvised trench knives. Heated, the top was bent, and folded over half-way. Then bent again. Forming a crude guard. the spike at the bottom was filed to a sharper point. Held in a reverse-grip (or ice-pick grip) these were very effective when it came to raiding trenches.

    4:37 I wonder why they used clubs / maces / morningstars and not axes?
    From doing some longsword myself I can see the benefit over sword or knife cuts, since you don’t need to worry about edge alignment. (If you perform a sloppy cut, probable if you’re a scared and cold soldier in the trenches, even a good sword isn’t making it through a decent wool coat.)
    That said the axe would also work since it would weigh the same and even if your cut attempt is completely off, a full force blow is still breaking bones or causing a concussion through a helmet. The axe would also be better as a tool.
