  • My brand new Harbor Freight ICON 3/8 swivel head ratchet was bone dry in the mechanism resulting in steel on steel contact.
I thought it sounded on the tinny side as I used it for the first time to change some spark plugs, and the feel was......well, dry.
This ratchet is a dream to disassemble, clean, and oil/grease back up.
    Thanks for watching!
    Work safe!

I took mine apart for the same reason.
I used Super Lube. Packed it in , put it back together and it sounds and feels so much better !!!

Thank you for sharing this video. I too have bought many ratchets over the past 50 years that were bone dry inside. So once a year I soak the heads of all my ratchets in some transmission fluid and they work as smooth as silk.

I've been seeing that a lot lately on new ratchets. It's sad, but I attribute it to a sign of the times we are living in.

I bought one and exchanged it because it sounded dry. The new one was bone dry as well. I'm glad I saw your video.

I like that ratchet. They should put something in it. Grease, oil something. lol Have a good week Pm! See ya!

Most of these will come with light grease in them. Every now and then one gets skipped from the looks of it.
      Have a good one!

2 years later and they still havent fixed that issue. just bought one and i used it and immediately knew it was dry just by the sound. It was hard as hell to turn.

It border lines on the incredible. How can a product like this be manufactured for years and yet still get QC to let it leave the facility. It's like most things today...no accountability.

Even with the grease it is still a very rough system for 90 teeth. Feels like a 60 tooth.
Has a severe amount of back drag as well.
I also have the 1/4 drive non swivel and it's smooth as silk with little back drag.
Not impressed with 3/8 swivel Head.
I've exchanged it twice and they all have the same feel.

I know what you mean, it just feels a bit sloppy on the gear machining. I use this ratchet more than the others too.

I would just recommend you to put a couple of drops of oil in there too, so the lube can be a little more thin, that type of mechanism doesn't like grease that much. Thanks for the video nevertheless!

I did exactly that the next morning!
      I'm really liking this ratchet!

I've heard of gun oil being a good lube for the ratchet parts.

I think gun oil would be great on a ratchet gear set, some gun oil is too thin but some is a little thicker and clingy too.
