The Front Bottoms are an indie/emo/folk punk band from good old New Jersey. These guys have seriously been at it for so long, and I mean that in a complimentary way.
Over the years they've released some of my favorite albums of all time. Especially their s/t which would have to somewhere in my top 100 albums ever. Mat and Brian actually have a total of seven studio albums: I Hate My Friends, My Grandma vs. Penumonia, The Front Bottoms, Talon of the Hawk, Back on Top, Going Grey, and soon to be In Sickness and In Flames.
Mat Uychich and Brian Sella are some of the nicest dudes this planet has ever had the good fortune to see, and I hope they do this forever. They sure have the talent and fans to do so if they wish. The Front Bottoms, forever.
IN SICKNESS AND IN FLAMES OUT THIS FRIDAY BABY!!! (and no fueled by ramen didn't pay me to say that, but if you bois over at FBR wanna toss me a couple geckos for ma efforts, I'd gladly accept. I mean, reptiles are tight. but just know i do this for the love and would never expect and geckos in return)
We're going full pop doggie for the rest of 2020.
Hope you mates have a great day and a safe upcoming weekend. -Nate

old comment. But yeah. A lot of this stuff sounds like late teen-young adult life shenaniganry. It's something that I've never really been able to experience myself due to moving or illness. So hearing somebody else whine about it so authentically is almost as good as the real thing I think.

The Front bottoms are my favorite band. No band has ever made me feel the same. Their lyrics are so dumb but mean so much. It's like having a conversation with your close friends at 3 am. It's a chilly mid-fall evening after walking around town to do nothing.
When camouflage first dropped I was with my friends helping put together a bed and I asked to play it since I was so excited. My friends hear "we are smoke, living on your parent's property" and they laugh. At the time I was a little embarrassed but you can't justify TFB lyrics. They never make sense but they hit me hard.

Its simple. Brian and Mat are phenomenal song writers. Brian is a good singer despite of his voice being unique, he doesn't push himself on the guitar, he plays what he knows he can and he does it perfectly. Mat is one of the most underrated drummers in all of music, he is unbelievably talented. Brian's lyrics are beautiful. Your points are accurate too though, they have a whole vibe to them that is so inviting, but it works so well because they really are great at what they do. Also, Going Grey is a fantastic album.

I remember when I first heard Twin Size Mattress back in 2013...
Don't know why, but when Sella says "And my nightmares will have nightmares every night," I got chills.
It's something about how he sings it, or the lyrics, or how the song crescendos at that point, or all of it.
That said, as a Jersey native, I thought they'd usher in a new NJ scene. I also thought I'd love them more than I do.
I still love about 70% of the stuff they put out there, the other 30% borders on the monotonous side of some midwest emo.

From following the front bottoms for the past seven years, it's been interesting to see the major differences in style for every album - change can be scary, and so sometimes when a new album dropped I would get this feeling like "oh no, what's happening to the front bottoms?" but ultimately I've loved everything, even if I didn't like it at first. I totally get why Going Grey seemed off for some people, but you know what? I kept listening to it, and now it's like the soundtrack for that period of my life. Far Drive in particular gives me an inexplicable feeling that no other music can replicate. Raining also instantly became one of my favourite songs of all time - so I don't mind the changes, in fact I think that if we had seven albums just like talon, then talon would have eventually become indistinguishable from everything else?

But I also had to learn to give up expecting them to make an album that sounds like it. The folk-punk stuff is gone, they've moved on to a bigger sound. Getting out of that mindset really helped with me being able to appreciate Going Grey- which I absolutely love. But really I think lots of bands in the genre brand themselves as really sad music or really sad. But TFB have so many happy songs that but still keep it real with the sad still.

I am still obsessed with the Fairbanks track because it brings me back big time to their Fairbanks show in the pub and after party. they used so much stuff pictures, videos, and samples in back on top from Alaska I was wondering if they were ever gonna put that time in a song and it's nowwwwwwww

i really love this video (almost as much as i love the front bottoms.) it's so fun to hear someone talk about how much they love a band, a band that i love for all the same reasons you explained. tfb has a way of finding so much meaning in insignificant things and i think that's what i appreciate most about them. self titled will always be number one for me, and so far in sickness & in flames has been exactly what i hoped it would be :)) also the merch looks so sick!! thanks for the cool vids :)

last night i was working on a bit of shitty metalocalypse vent-fanfic and as soon as i wrote the words, "[...] “Yea, yer right. _We dhon’t_." (_Ew._ Pickles always cringes so fuckin' hard at the way his brother squashes those dental consonants up against the roof of his mouth.) [...]" i realized i was thinking of brian sella. and then this morning this is in my recommendeds-feels like some sorta serendipity
i havent really listened to anything of theirs after Back on Top, or even all of that one for transparency- basically all* for reasons you were able to put much more succinctly here than i ever could. i probably won't listen to the new one either, but i am excited for it nonetheless ✌🏻

Thanks for the great video Nate! Love all their albums, hard to pick one since I listen to them everyday and have a new favorite song everyday. Probably talon of the hawk since every single song is a "must listen" song.
The reason I like them so much is I think their music makes the shortest distance between my ears and emotion, memories, nostalgia, etc. if that makes sense.

I’m so glad you made this. Over the past two years, The Front Bottoms have become one of my top bands ever and a big inspiration in the music I’ve created. I agree with most of your points, except Going Grey being bad, as that was the first album I heard and while it isn’t their best, it has a lot of great moments, and Raining is my favorite song by them, and one I’ve performed live countless times. Self-titled would be their best, Talon of the Hawk has some of their best moments but works better as an entire album rather than individually, and Back in Top took a while to fully grow on me, but has some of their best songs ever and truly amazing moments. West Virginia gives me chills every time, and Plastic Flowers helped give me/fuel an existential crisis, which is a nod to their quality writing. Loved it dude!

Nothing is wrong with their post s/t stuff as I love most their post s/t stuff as well, but something about I Hate My Friends, Brothers Can’t Be Friends, My Grandma VS Pneumonia and the rare Myspace cd, 2.0 is just special. Wholesome and emotional. Thats what I've always felt about tfb. They got me through the hardest times of my life. I remember when going Grey came out I was a little disappointed by it and thought I may have just grown out of the band. I thought fueled by ramen ruined them. Ive been listening to in sickness and in flames and i really really am loving it though. My first tattoo was the knife from talon and I still remember my instagram caption "ive got a tattoo on my right arm that I will probably regret one day" didnt think of the caption til after maybe I shouldve put it on my leg lmao. I mean this in the nicest way possible, you're too young to "get" going gray. Revisit when you're panicking over being closer to 30 than 20.
Edit for elaboration: going gray captures that late 20s/early 30s melancholy better than almost any other album I've heard in my life. The only album that nails that feeling is science fiction by brand new.

@@camsheet4649 It's been a blessing and a curse to age at a similar rate to my favorite bands. The older I get, alot of my old favorites hit different. Some of the most cathartic songs for me 5 years ago are that much more emotionally crushing with a lens of nostalgia on them.

Hehe "fireworks" .. fuck man I love TFB. I think IS&IF is going to be a grower for me, it's totally different but in a good way. I don't think bands should be forced to stick to a single sound, but it is striking to go from a self titled song to IS&IF song. Either way nothing but love for Brian and Matt. I kicked off a lettering challenge (graphic design art based on, you guessed it, lettering) on my IG and doing a 3 part each band I select, TFB is the first one! Glad I found your channel Nate, binged so much of it lately.
