I've wanted to be able to perform an FM alignment for quite some time now, so I finally bit the bullet and bought the proper equipment to do so! However, it's very old, so it needs to be looked over before I start using it.

I haven't seen one of these in years. I used one of these daily for a couple of years in about 1978-79. If I remember right, except for the crystal controlled outputs, it wasn't very useful for rf alignment. We had a full commercial radio shop in house though, so we had access to better equipment to use for that. I mainly used it for the audio section and dummy speaker load. We were a Warranty repair station for almost all brands of consumer audio and car radio equipment at the time.

You inspired me to open up the housing of my Sencore SG165 and have a look. I was happy to find that all the big caps had been replaced with 105C Panasonics in the early 2000's (I forgot I had done that). Also the plastic shaft for the RF tuner was intact and looks good. I feel like a very lucky guy! I did go ahead and replace the Ceramic caps on the AC line with XY safety rated caps. Also replaced a couple of those backwards small 2uF electrolytics. Thanks for pointing out the polarity issue. I did not have to learn that the hard way! On to the next alignment.

I like that Rocker is singled out as a label for the knob. I don't think there any question that if you own a classic Marantz that you will be rocking.

Great video! I am looking to add one of these FM generators to my bench, and an AM rf generator. Most of the test equipment I have is old and has needed the usual capacitors, switches, pots cleaned. Acquired a Heathkit IT-28 capacitor checker before the prices went crazy, recapped and calibrated it. I regret I sold my frequency counter to an inspector at my workshop. (edit: error, changed IG-18 to IT-28)

I keep a bicycle mini tool in my electrics toolbox. It has all sizes of allen / hex wrenches in metric. Phillips and flathead, 6mm socket all together and it is small so it gets to a lot of places. It was 4.50 CAD at the Dollar Store and I use it a lot. It doesn't say Snap on, but it sure is handy. I also like it because I know I dont have to dig around for allens.

Capacitors measuring high is often an indication of (electrical leakage) parallel resistance. I did build Mr. Carlson's capacitor tester. It's very good for detecting leakage, but charging high value (electrolytic) capacitors can take a long time if doing it through the tester.
BTW, Your style is improving. Talking to your audience/the camera.

Great info on the SG165. I have one as well and I will now look inside and see what condition the capacitors are in. I will also check the shaft on the tuner. I have a Sencor SG 80 too. I have slowly been learning how to align tuners on Marantz 22XX units. I appreciate the video you just made. Thanks.

I just restored one last week. Definitely need caps all around. Only about 5-7 per board. The two big caps on the side of chassis are not on the schematic and go to the power test meters from speaker inputs. The manual which is available in PDF is wonderful. Has circuit by circuit description, waveforms, calibration procedure operating instructions and troubleshooting techniques. My nylon shaft was broke. Did the same repair. Last note : notice how the nylon shaft is not aligned with the hole for the knob that controls it? Well I fixed that by putting the screws into the front of gang capacitor that Sencoe leaves out for some reason. It brought the shaft right down and in line. Now no pressure on it when I slide all the control shafts in. I made three probes using copper pipe caps. You need those !

Good luck. It's my understanding, that FM alignment, is extraordinarily complex, and requires a ton, of very sophisticated and expensive equipment. Most audio repair shops, do not get it right. I sense, that you don't know what you don't know, but I commend you for trying.

Our vo-tech lab radio-tv class had one of these, made alignment jobs a breeze. Always wanted one but by the time I made enough money to afford anything Sencore, they were no longer made. I was able to afford Heathkit and had the satisfaction of assembling their kits.

Classic American design. This is the way stuff was built back then. Virtually everything inside was manufactured in the US - Capacitors, resistors, transformers, switches, transistors, etc. Hand assembled here also.

Great content. The front panel of the instrument looks in good shape. Maybe that shaft broke early on in its career so they just shelved it and it kept its looks.

xraytonyb is a wizard, way above my knowledge level. He and Mr. Carlson are the best teachers on the tube IMHO. I do like Mr. Carlson's capacitor leakage tester, much safer than the old high voltage testers like my Heathkit IT-28.

@@zulumax1That's usually what I do when I fix older radios, however, you can buy these can new from antique electronic supply. They are CE manufacturing and made in the US with original mallory equipment, so they're identical to the original, I did this for my eico ST-70, ST-96 and MX-90 stereo multiplexers. I wanted them to be as original as possible.

Would love to see a tutorial on AM/FM alignment on a known good working receiver. I understand troubleshooting problematic tuning components can be real tricky, but walking thru the basic alignment steps in the service manual on a working receiver shouldn't be all that tough. They make it sound like there only a select few guys on the entire planet that can do this and I just don't buy it.

@@tubeDude48 As do I, and I pay dearly for the axial ones. I bought the power supply can electrolytic kit for the Fisher 500C tube receiver for $128 from Hayseed Hamfest.
I bought all the axial electrolytics I could find from Mouser, but I had to settle for Nichicon Fine Gold 47uF 10v radial ones for the cathode bypass capacitors on the phase splitter driver tubes. The original ones are 50 uF 10v, but 47uF is what you can get now days. 1 uF 350v in the multiplex circuit, could not find an axial one to replace that one either.
