INAV 7 Tailsitter progress - Theer twin

- Tailsitter takeoff, transition and wing mode all work OK, but not stable in a hover for more than a few seconds. Struggling to hold vertical orientation and some oscillations when switching out of wing mode at speed.
Need help with the quad pids that include elevons.

When you set everything up it would be a giant leap for man kind “VTOL Development” ,I hope you teach us how to set everything up, keep up the good work 💪🏼
That's brilliant! When you have it fully tuned it's going to very cool indeed ;-) Hum.....looking through my parts bin for dual tractor motors.
It goes from hover to wing good . I can only guess at how my landings would lol . Have a blessed day my friend .
Well done Andrew, I'm watching progress with interest. I have a few different BNF tail sitters (with proprietary flight controllers and firmware) that work superbly, however, I'm keen to see this working on INAV. Yep, it took me a few failed takeoffs with the BNFs to realise you have to punch it initially to get off the deck.
I'd like to tinker with something like this later. I have a T1 vTol running well so far . . .
working on this atm with a penguin. I got it to a pretty ok hover now. Still working on the transition in higher winds.
Yes penguin is tail sitter ready.
Beautifull 👍🇧🇷🇧🇷
Interesting to watch your experiments with this 1, Andrew. Our old XK X520 versions of the same set-up are difficult to fly in the bi-copter mode in any wind. Only really possible to get control by lining up the wing with the wind direction and using the diff thrust for direction control.
Also coming back from horizontal to vertical requires just over 1/2 throttle or the flight controller can get its knickers in a twist. Great little toy though and (most importantly for us Old Farts) tough as Hades! 😉😊
Cheers 👍💪✌
..Great concept, not seen this "tail sitter" before, think I've been living under a bush! So much technology now, just got into fpv, with my Phoenix and elec Longshot, with a screen not goggles, glasses and short sight make for a hard to find model once the goggles are removed. Think I'm gonna buy a simple park flyer, like volantex Ranger, to check out stabilized flight in windier, not too much, when I can't fly my 1 MTR dlg on the cricket pitch. Any other suggestions Andrew at a low price?
Very nice VTOL experiment(s). Think as you noted, larger control surfaces might be required.
Of the tail-sitters I've seen, ones using servos to pitch motor up/down seem to have better hover control. Tail-sitters using only flight controls, tend to have issues descending. Have to descend slowly, or the downward motion seems to cancel out prop wash over wing/controls, diminishing their effectiveness.
Proving to be quite difficult to tune but fun trying
Glad are having fun. :)
I wonder how this compares with dRehmFlight? Check out the video: Taming the Tail-Sitter: Hover to Forward Flight Explained and he shows that he can make a tail sitter that transitions from hover to level flight and back to hover again.
Wouldn't mind his coding skills!
@@AndrewNewton yeah, no kidding! Maybe this year, I'll find the time to see if I can follow his build and programming instructions.
Nice video as always!! Have a question... what kind of radio do you recommend for inav, planes like this? Thank you
Here's my blog post on the subject newtonairlines.blogspot.com/2024/03/best-radios-for-inav-2024.html
Andrew - when in VTOL, could you possibly have a 'vertical' C of G issue? In other words, when vertical the wing balance just wants to 'lean forward' ?
Yes possible. I should also try pushing the CG back a bit
Always a pleasure Sis Andrew I totally agree with the control surfaces If you have the space, hang your wing with some string and experement to see how balanced your aircraft is to see if its left or right side heavey
Having similar issues with the Eclipson e-VTOL-1.
Interesting
I’ve been wanting to try this. Could you post your diff file?
Yes, added to the description now.
Awesome! Thanks
Its a safe way to takeoff as long as its calm.... Whats the difference between takeoff mode and level flight...?...Is it just elevon trim?...🤔😳🇬🇧
Takeoff is Quad profile with board vertical plus elevons, level flight is just normal flying wing
@@AndrewNewton Thanks Andrew, it would seem the Penguin is the weapon of choice for this...🤔😳🇬🇧
@@EnglishTurbines Yes, I might try with the Penguin.
