not only was he a great ballplayer, but he was one of the most humble people I've ever met. he was the type that knew if he spent a couple seconds talking to a kid that loved him, that HE may not remember it but the kid would remember it for the rest of his life. so he'd take the second to talk to the kids that wanted to talk to him. he NEVER acted like a rich, overbearing asshole like most of the MLB greats today. he was my idol and I actually had the pleasure of meeting him 3 times, all in Cleveland. he gave my dad a death stare once because he threw me a ball and my dad, being older and much taller, caught it of course. Thome stopped in his tracks and stared him down until he saw him hand me the ball. then he hit 2 HR's and a double, I somehow got his attention after the game and he actually remembered throwing me the ball because of my dad(lol) and signed it for me and took a picture with me. still one of my favorite pictures to this day, prized possession. and very glad he signed a one-day contract with the Indians specifically to retire there. it's what he deserved. now they have him a giant statue of him in Center Field, which is also what he deserved.

There aren't many hitters in the last 30 years who can say that they put Roger Clemens into the upper deck. Jim Thome hit a baseball as consistently hard as any player in history. If that Indians team of the 90's had won a couple of rings, Thome would've gone into the HoF with a 95-96% voting percentage. He was absolutely incredible to watch.
