I love Seed Talk, have been watching many episodes and learning so much. Can you do an episode on post-harvest treatments like the chlorine tablets and holding solution, food given to flowers post harvest?
My zinnias grow and repeat bloom very well- zone 9b California- we’re hot and dry and have a great vase life, and no critters!😊

John Dole did some research on how Zinnias have different vase life based on TIME OF YEAR harvested, which is crazy to take into consideration when harvesting zinnias. This could really do with the unpredictable vase life.

My Zinnia's here in zone 6a western NY. like temperate weather
mid to upper 70's but hotter then that they take forever to bloom.

My biggest pet peeve is the bloom variance on the same plant.
The only time I have a issue with case life is when I harvest at wrong stage.
Does the vase life seem to be worse when you harvest too early or too late? Just curious! ☺

@@LayneAngelo I plan on planting delphinium, yarrow and echinacea. It has been a strange year for winter survival here. I accidentally left a dahlia tuber in the ground and it came back. It's getting ready to bloom. Some of the apple blossom snaps that I didn't pull out, or cut down, also survived and looked pretty good too, grew right back from the root. Must have been the 2 feet of snow we had most of the winter lol. It's making me brave, to try more zone 5 plants 🤞
Thank you for a great seed talk and great tips! Nice to hear it's not just me who is struggling with Zinnias (which I could not do without). I feel you Lane with the problem of crushing the stems when stripping leaves. I wish there were a better way of doing it.
Oh! That's my frustration too, crushing stems when removing leaves. Never thought to hear from a pro on this!
I have better "luck" when I remove top leaves by pinching upwards not down like other stems. I do like that feeling as I strip the leaves. 😂

🌻Ellen for the farmer that is asking you to change the water daily have you asked them if they are using a holding solution? They may not be using it and that’s why they are saying to change the water. Thanks ladies this was a great topic!😊

More and more growers are trying to not use the chemicals in the water with the flowers. And if they're not using chemicals, it's good to change the water every. Hi y'all, I absolutely love all the great topics and information I have learned and continue to learn from y'all!!! Question...I know today's topic covered Zinnia problems and something that stuck out to me was about harvesting flowers in a manner that doesn't damage them. Is there any way y'all could do some demonstrations on harvesting different flowers and how you would rubber band them, know how many flowers to rubber band together, and how they should be placed into buckets so as not to damage them. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and helping us learn about flowers!!!

My zinnias that I tested with cvbn tablet and followed by holding solution still holding strong it’s been 8 days in a vase and still looking good, never refrigerated.

We have humidity but meltdown might be very hot and humid. They were great until it started raining after long heat duration of dry.

Scabiosa seeds, the little hairy helicopter thing - that sticks out of the “badminton birdie”- if that has came out of the “birdie” will the seed still be viable? Or is that the actual seed???
Hello! I must have missed your message on my initial pass through the comments 😩 Thank you so much for the very kind words and for your enthusiasm about "Seed Talk"! It really means a lot 🥰 Regarding the scabiosa seeds, you will often find a small seed on the end of a tiny stick within the badminton birdie. You may even notice the end of the stick sticking out of the birdie. Sometimes you can separate the birdie from the stick / seed (or sometimes the seed will arrive already separated!). If the stick breaks off, the seed itself may still be inside the birdie. I would still try planting the birdies and see if anything sprouts! Hello! So happy you enjoyed this episode ☺ The product Lisa uses at the farm is called "Chrysal Clear Professional #2 T-Bags". The Gardener's Workshop's official description is: "Provides hydration and just enough food for stems to thrive but slows down development during the display or distribution stage. Perfect for growers to use following the CVBN tab pretreatment. Use in market display buckets, commercial customer orders (florists and supermarkets), and in buckets of stems being held. Helps prevent premature development". I am planning on doing a conditioning episode at some point, but it may not be until next year. Meanwhile, I hope this helps! I watch a gardener in the UK, she just had a video up and mentioned using watered down milk on her straw flowers. Said there's an enzyme in the milk that works, she said it seems to be working. Sorry she didn't say the ratio....homegrown garden is her channel.

I have heard some info about zinnias and I would like to know if its true. First zinnias do not like flower food in the vase, second zinnias don't like the water in the vase filled up to the top of the vase. I have tried it both ways and I prefer using flower food, the water says cleaner longer and I fill up my vase to the top because they drink so much so quickly. I also use quick dip. What do you do to keep your zinnias happy? Thanks

Meanwhile, I would say to keep doing what works for you! If you are having good results using flower food and filling your vase up to the top, I would certainly continue doing that ☺ As a home gardener, I have had great results just using water and filling my vases up fairly high, as well. I make bouquets and it’s always hit and miss with zinnias. Sometimes they’re fine; sometimes they die within 24 hours. I don’t get it. I went to a florist to make a delivery and he had zinnias in a cooler. I wanted to ask what his temperature was but I didn’t.
