    Morning, Matthew:) I'm laughing because saLmon...lol....is my favorite color geranium in the garden, I also love to intersperse beautiful pink flowers, as well. Have a beautiful day:):):):)

      Silent letters are the worst! Some areas pronounce the "al" and others don't. I'm a fan of the "al". :)

    So excited for this video! Because of your videos about geraniums last year I decided I wanted to try them this year so 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I’m gonna start them in a few days and we will see! Thank you Matthew 🌿❤️🌿

      Yay! I've been looking for canna seeds after seeing you grow yours (because it's not something I ever thought about growing from seed and they're also SUPER expensive like geraniums). Mutual inspiration!

    Thanks for the video!! I actually bought geranium seeds for the first time (maverick quicksilver -a light pink - from Pinetree seeds) and didn't realize they needed so long!! But now that I look at the package it does say up to 16 weeks 😁 My last frost is early to mid May, so this will be fine. I also started some new coleus seeds today. I'll follow your progress on ig!! 🙂

    Great video. I started my geraniums this past weekend. I soaked the seeds in water for about 12 hours. Moved them to roxul cubes in a 10"×20" tray with some lid. I left it under my basement stairs in the dark. I left a thermometer sensor in the dome and it stayed around 18 celcius. If there was any that hasn't begun growing I have yet to notice. It's been 2 days and the small leaves will green up now that they have been moved under a light.

    Matthew, I've never intentionally grown geraniums from seed. However, Mother Nature has planted geranium seeds for me. In other words, I get a few volunteer geraniums every year. I also love the Salmon colored geraniums best, so last year that's the only color I purchased and planted. Just for fun, I saved seeds from those, but since they were open-pollinated, it's anyone's guess as to what color blooms I'll get from those seeds. I'm setting up an indoor seed starting area for the first time. (It's not quite ready yet, but it will be soon.) I do most of my seed starting using the winter-sow method. I'm so excited to start growing things again and can hardly wait until Spring arrives!

    I bake my soil at 400F for 20 minutes to get rid of bugs/larva, but use yellow sticky papers to catch flies ‘just in case’. Love the mosquito bits! I use the dunks in the yard where I regularly get puddles and never have a mosquito issue. Thank you for the chuckle that you’re on the couch. I’m confined to the kitchen or outside because I dropped a bucket of dirt once down the stairs covering a couch, rug, walls, etc. 😂

      I've baked, microwaved, added boiling water, added cinnamon, and ALLLLLL the other tricks and have still had fungus gnat issues EVERY year. I imagine I will this year too, but the granules do seem to help (at least for me). I'm sure they're beneficial for some ecosystem, but I wouldn't cry if they went extinct. lol

      Plus, seems like geraniums you can start a lot sooner than most veggies etc, I assume they take longer to get to plant our size 💕 bonus when it’s freezing and dreary here in Ohio 😅

      @@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden do you know if you can save seeds from the flowers and then have the seeds for the following year,?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 lety

      You could potentially do so from open pollinated varieties, although you would probably need to leave the blooms longer than what we typically do when they begin looking bad. I pull them off. The Maverick series specifically are F1 hybrids, so you would not get the same color from them.

    Hi Matthew! This was relly interesting and very informative. I appreciate how you fo into such great detail. Question: Have you ever ha problems with the mosquito bits getting moldy when you add them to your seed starting mix? Just curious because I've read in the reviews that if placed on top of the soil, or used to make a tea that they get moldy. I forgot to add in another video that I do hope you will sow us how you make your soil blocks for seed starting. Thank you so much for sharing!

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 lety +1

      Park Seed would be a good option! I've purchased from them before. Their pricing tends to be high and there are cheaper options for geraniums specifically. Harris Seeds is one option if you're looking at the 100 pack. I haven't purchased from Harris Seeds before, but they look like a legitimate source.

    I had previously started some geranium seeds with mixed success. Tried your method and I have germination in three days! When do you take the dome off and take them off the heating mat?

    • @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
      @TheSouthernersNorthernGarden  Před 2 lety +1

      Take the dome off after you have pretty good germination. You don’t want fungus or mold to form if you leave it too long. You can keep them on the heat pad to encourage root development and faster growth as long as you want. But if you need the mat for other seeds, feel free to remove it whenever you need to.
